WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else

@Tsaukpaetra said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:
Windows Update is trying to install shit it already installed or no longer requires
Then Windows Update is an even bigger than I thought
Typically "pausing" and then checking for updates makes them go away.
Pausing is disabled

Pausing updates is a privilege home edition users haven't paid for.

Status: Cortana is dead.
Sadly, this means my Hololens can't do things like "hey cortana, turn off" anymore.
There's also no such thing as "Windows Update Assistant"...
Anyone wanna buy a Hololens 1 from me?

Hololens 1
As much as I'd like to have a neat AR rig to mess around with, I can't imagine what I'd actually do with one. Especially since I already never use my VR rig and that generally has more gaming capacity than AR stuff does, let alone several-year-old equipment...

Yeah, triple so since it's effectively stuck on Windows 10 RS5....

The Windows 10 version still uses that name; Windows 11 calls it the Install Assistant.
(These may not help you any, but they do exist.)

Yes, it's apparently because the Cortana App (which I just recently discovered was a different App than the Start Menu) is unable to differentiate Hololens from typical Windows 10 x86 I guess...

This keeps happening again and again.
- Turn on (already paired to computer) headphones. They connect and work fine;
- Turn off headphones while not in use to conserve battery;
- Turn on headphones. They connect and work fine
- Turn off headphones;
- Turn on headphones. They connect and work fine, but after a while the sound starts skipping unpredictably, regardless of battery level. Something like skipping half a second every 30 seconds. It gets just annoying enough when listening to music;
- Open sound device troubleshooter. No problems are found, but the problem goes away any way;
- Time passes;
- More time passes;
- : skip
- : GAH!
I have another set of wireless headphones which I thought were broken because the problem was even worse then, but now I see it's got to be Windows.

Typical of every Windows troubleshooter

Could be caused by 2.4 GHz interference with your (or a neighbor's) WiFi network.

Most employers don't want XXX on work laptops.
User is experiencing heating issues.
XXX will do that.

Just uninstall all those crypto-mining apps.
-
@Zecc If you are using WiFi for your network connection, you can try setting it to prefer 5 (or 6) Ghz in Device Manager/Network adapters/(your wireless adapter), Properties, Advanced, and looking through the list for the setting. My Intel adapter calls it "Preferred Band".
-
Hmm. I'll keep that in mind. I wonder if my girlfriend working from home has exacerbated the problem. It hasn't helped any, in any case.

Everywhere else in the world is, but we seem to not be. It's been about two months since it was properly warm, despite this being the bulk of summer. We're stuck on the wrong side of the jet stream...

In Quebec, the summer as been mostly rain.
At least, it's not snow
-
@TimeBandit Send some of that rain to the parts that are on fire.
-
@HardwareGeek In fact, let's just homogenize all weather for a week...
-
@HardwareGeek No thank you. We need all the heat we can get in

On mom’s computer.
This completely unwarranted out of the blue advertisement bullshit is how they get people who don’t know what this means.How about no?!
How about you hire at least a single fucking QA person to check if the text of your unsolicited shovelware fits in the fucking window?
-
@topspin said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:

I'm convinced that this wasn't the owner of the pop-up's fault. There's no way the team that made notifications could foresee a long text notification, and you know that a small company doesn't have enough budget for testing.
Also, this super fun to see on all the digital signage at my place. Like, supposedly updates and the like are curated, so Microshaft obviously skipped it in under the pretext of a security update.
Good job.
-
@Tsaukpaetra that’s one reason I mentally show the finger whenever our IT security guy sends mails that we should always install updates immediately.
Maybe if I they distinguished between bug fixes and feature (negative) updates.
-
@topspin It's a (job) security (for them) update?

Last week, I got a used Xbone, and associated it with my personal Microsoft account. I had an Xbone controller before, that I've used on PC but never on my work PC. This morning when I got into work, I got this popup on my work computer:
Coincidence, or is Microsoft spying on me in a way that's simultaneously very effective (associates my personal account with my work) and incompetent (shows me this nonsense at work)
-
@hungrier Coincidence. They're just spamming advertising everywhere in Windows nowadays. I saw that same ad at some point, and I have not used an Xbox since the original (which was not on "Xbox Live").

User error. You haven't told settings to STFU about Suggested hints.

Imagine thinking Window$ will honor that setting past the next update
-
@dcon I thought I had. I turned off the search box, Cortana, "News and interests" etc. But apparently there was another setting that I had missed (or was added with default opt-in since the last time I looked)

I did notice that some update had reset that... it was probably when I let the W11 upgrade thru.

I suspect it was the update. Search box showed up all of the sudden for #MeToo yesterday after updates.

I appreciate the undo button, Windows, but has it occurred to you that perhaps I had removed it before (or Cortana / same ) because I didn't want it?
-

They considered it, but then considered the potential to make ookamooka ad buxx if you were too to Undo their helpful fix, so that won out.
-

Neither. They added a new one that's effectively the same thing, but named differently, so technically it's different and defaulted opt-out.

Status: In the middle of a session, decided it didn't know how to USB any more. Currently rebooting to see if that helps.
EDIT: Yes. Also had to restart my KVM.
-
Microsoft, being a small company and all, barely has the budget to translate their blatant advertising so I can see why they would want to get their money's worth by sending it to my work PC. Said blatant advertising also doubles as a throat clearing exercise . How considerate of them
-
@Placeholder They happened to mix up your profile with another WDTWTF regular...
