Another 10 minutes go by. Still stuck at 73%. "Windows Modules Installer Worker" always at ~30% CPU.
WTF are you doing? Crypto-mining?
There's no disk or network activity.

Just saw it go from 73 to 74%. After another 12 minutes.

You know you can hibernate in the middle of updates right? I do it all the time accidentally.

For the past, hmm, three weeks?, I haven't been able to login using the fingerprint reader in my laptop.
This doesn't bother me per se, as I've been hitting the swimming pool, the weather's colder, my fingerprints might have changed slightly for some reason, whatever.
What bothers me is that when I go to reconfigure the fingerprint recognition, it tells me I've already added this fingerprint and doesn't let me do it again.
I've even tried adding a new finger () but the same thing happens.

@Zecc I don't think that accusation holds water.

No sympathy from me; WTF-U only lets one log in with a password (minimum length: 16 characters).

Microsoft Update Bullshit?
That's redundant.
Never use Windows Update, or Microsoft Update, or whatever they are calling it this week. Never. Seriously.
-- Set Windows Update to manual in Services.msc
-- Once a month or whenever you happen to think of it, go to Microsoft Update Catalog and search for your particular flavor of Windows.
-- Download the latest update
-- InstallOne file. One reboot. Fast, easy, with almost no retarded fuckery.
It would be nice if Microsoft could get their shit together, but apparently they can't. I guess 200,000 employees and Eleventy Gazillion Dollars just isn't enough.

This occurred to me when I updated my BIOS firmware, which apparently fucked the fTPM/ only solution was to clear it, and clear the Windows Hello configuration. And set it back up again, natch.

As seen elsewhere:
...I upgraded my computer hardware. The old one worked, but it was prolly 6-7 years old and the CPU was always running at 100%. I got a new mobo, i-9 CPU to replace the old i-5, and 32 GB DDR5 RAM. Put it all back together and hey, it works.
My problem is that Windows (Win 10 pro) is now telling me I have to activate it. So I go setting > activate > “I made changes to my hardware”, it asks for my Microsoft ID and PW, but it won't accept it. Tells me I need to update. Win updates won't download the update (because it's not activated??), and the update isn't available to be downloaded outside of windows updater (I think the update has to do with having a 16 core CPU rather than the old 4 core one, but I'm not sure). I even tried just entering the valid product key (I still have it) but it won't accept that either. It seems to be a nice little vicious circle, and I'll be damned if I'm gonna buy a new key when I have a perfectly valid one already.
-
@boomzilla yeah, that’s “you have an OEM licence and you installed it on a new PC so it’s not reaaaaaaaally valid any more” territory.
Not sure that guy”s entirely in the right, but I’m also not sure he’s entirely in the wrong either. Damned OEM bullshit.
-
@boomzilla Not to detract from the usual update fuckery, but:
I got a new mobo, i-9 CPU
AFAIK, this is sufficient for a definition of a new computer (which it, quite honestly, is).

This is why you should always get a job at a Microsoft partner or that will provide you with an MSDN subscription, so you can have MAKs to use totally legitimately instead

If all copies were retail, it would be less dramatic to transfer because you wouldn’t be fighting the “it’s not licenced” logic, only that you’ve transferred it to a new machine and decommissioned the old one.
-
@Applied-Mediocrity said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:

I've heard that major hardware upgrades should be done incrementally to avoid the "new computer" problem, although the new mobo alone may be enough to trigger it. Maybe, if the new CPU is socket compatible with the old mobo, plug it into the old one first, check that Windows is still happy, and then swap in the new mobo. Or new mobo with the old CPU. No idea whether that would work, but it might be worth a try.

By the letter of the license (and by my experiences with when phone reactivation becomes required for OEM licenses), changing the motherboard, CPU, or hard drive was sufficient to count as a "new computer" prior to Windows 10. They've changed the rules some for Windows 10+ so that as long as you have a digitally issued license associated with a POMSA you can transfer the license to new hardware without limitation or penalty (but it can only be active on one device at a time). If you're one of the fuddy duddys on here who absolutely refuse to use any cloud service account, then you're just kind of SOL and will be "forced" to buy a new product key. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/reactivating-windows-after-a-hardware-change-2c0e962a-f04c-145b-6ead-fb3fc72b6665#ID0EBD=Windows_10

Yes...? All our laptops here a bought with them as embedded certs.
-
@topspin you can also get Pro as a Store upgrade for an OEM licence which also effectively makes it an OEM licence for the purposes of upgrading.
Assuming it installs correctly, which there is a distinct non-zero chance of it not, and deciding you have Enterprise which it then promptly points out you do not have a licence for...

Yes - if you buy business computers they usually come with Pro rather than Home.

No.
I replaced the spinning rust of my laptop with an SSD, using a tool (Acronis?) for copying everything on the disk. And it just worked.
And that is Windows 7.

I've never had any problems in the past where replacing hardware caused an activation problem, but even if it did .... so what?
I'm pretty sure that Microsoft allows a couple of re-activations before they complain about it.

Man Dies of Starvation While Waiting for Windows Update to Fix Itself

@Zerosquare I don't even remember how many restarts there have been now (dual-boot with Linux as the default, so each restart requires me to be there to switch the boot item to Windows). But that problem is fixed. One more restart, though.

the sun doesn't have near enough mass to go supernova. Yes, it will eventually swallow the earth as a red giant. But never supernova.

@boomzilla either way the heat death of the world will come and claim Windows Update forever.

Speaking of Windows Update
Edit:
In a test by BleepingComputer this morning, a brand new install of Windows 10 using the latest ISO from Microsoft created a 522MB WinRE partition. However, even this new install has a partition that is too small, causing the KB5034441 security update not to install and display a 0x80070643 error.
