Poll: Circular Avatars
-
So, what do we think about the new "humanizing" circular avatars?
- Literally the worst thing ever. Make it stop!
- I can live with it but it's still pretty bad.
- Meh.
- OK.
- AVATAR_NOT_FOUND.
-
I don't like them.
-
Are you using Chrome? They can be edited out locally...
Also, you should definitely go on meta.d and demonstrate what this does to your avatar.
-
You may be surprised that, given the dislike for them that I expressed loudly and with much vulgarity in the Status topic, I voted for the second option. As terrible as I think the change is, it's merely cosmetic. It's not a functional failure, like the markdown parser, the broken quoting, or the frequent 5xx errors.
I don't necessarily object to the circular avatars, themselves. Some of them are terribly broken, like @Buddy's, but some actually look good. What I do object to, very strongly, is the arrogance of CDCK in imposing their opinion over that of their users. Had I wanted a circular avatar, I am perfectly capable of 'shopping my avatar to be circular.
I do not consider user CSS to be a satisfactory
fixworkaround for this dictatorial fiat. It puts the onus of choosing the avatar shape on the viewer, and removes the avatar owner's ability to choose his own avatar's appearance. Let's say, for the sake of an example, that @tar decides he likes his circular avatar, but I install the CSS that makes it square; what I see is not the avatar that @tar wishes to display (unless he uploads a new, 'shopped one). Meanwhile, I see my own avatar as rectangular, but everyone else (who hasn't installed custom CSS) sees the stupid-looking circle with the edges clipped off.Fuck Jeff and his arrogance. Fuck him with a red-hot poker. My greatest hope for for CDCK's future is bankruptcy — a long, painful bankruptcy that ends with Jeff living in a cardboard box under an 880 overpass in Oakland.

This.

the new "humanizing" circular avatars
Anybody who thinks they have found a way to humanize Christopher Pyne is in any case sadly mistaken.
-
- Rounded edges feel a bit more organic and human. When we're talking about avatars of people, human is good.

POST CAN'T BE EMPTY

I see they still have their priorities straight.
-
I really don't see the freak out here, the onus on the avatar default style is on the forum admin, not the viewer. If the round style is not working for admins here, change it, it's one CSS rule
The language you are choosing to use here is rather violent and completely unjustified
We made a choice to change a default css rule, heck the designer of the fucking theme made the call its a better default
Maybe it don't fit you well here, fine, don't use it nobody is holding a gun to @pjh's head
-
It seems @codinghorror hasn't complained yet about his avator looking like it's drowning in a sea of white.
-
Why did circular avatars just suddenly appear out of nowhere, without any warning that anyone had even proposed making this change here? It's the suddenness and arbitrariness of it that I think is what's rankling people.
-
Its only sudden here cause somebody updated out of the beta cycle. This has been in the making for a while Kris has wanted this done for ages.
-
They can be edited out locally...
Done.go on meta.d and demonstrate what this does to your avatar.
Especially since I already humanized myself for them #ungrateful

What is so anti-human about squares?
Photographs have always been rectangular.
-
I initially voted "Literally the worst thing ever. Make it stop!", but I thought for a second you were referring to the choice of the word "humanizing".
I changed my vote to "Meh". It's a pretty minor issue.

Add this to Stylish.
img.avatar { border-radius: 0px; }
-
So what do the default-created avatars look like circular?
(Edit)
Like total ass. That's actually painful.
-
I could go with rounded corners.
Circular is literally inhuman - name one visible feature of a human that's actually circular.
(Not ovoid or rounded edges)Now name one that's visible in polite company.
-
Your pupils?
-
That's the only one (Well, pair, and only to a first approximation)
What's inside those pupils? Pure black, unless something has gone very, very wrong.
-
Add this to Stylish.
I went forimg.avatar { border-radius: 10%; }
I like the round, I just don't like how much round. 10% looks pretty nice though; rounds off the corners without smashing avatars into oblivion
I just need to figure out how to set Stylish to use the style only on Discourse sites…
-
Waiting for @PJH to add it to the WTDWTF CSS...
-
Oh dear… now they're talking about replacing the blue avatar highlight in the topic list with a drop-shadow…
-
Someone needs to get Jeff out of the bikeshed so they can fix some bugs rather than making silly changes.
-
I've already expressed my distaste for it… but I'm not expecting to have any influence.
-
Likewise. I like how Jeff disagrees and then goes "oh actually we did this on StackExchange so now I've changed my mind completely and applied it already".
-
Oh dear… now they're talking about replacing the blue avatar highlight in the topic list with a drop-shadow…
perceived salience of a corner varies linearly with the angle of the corner. Sharp angles generated stronger illusory salience than shallow angles
As the article I linked clarified: hard corners stand out more. Avatars are important; buttons are important-er. So I think creating the contrast between the two is worth it.Good thing drop-shadows look less salient than round corners, amirite?
-
I like how Jeff disagrees and then goes "oh actually we did this on StackExchange so now I've changed my mind completely and applied it already".
…back to Stylish… done.
-
Same.
-
I don't like them. My avatar got humanized too much.
-
Damn you! Your options were good enough to convince me to not vote NOT_FOUND!
-
OH MY GOD MY AAAAAARMS
Seriously though, if I wanted a circular avatar, I'd also make a circular avatar. And what the hell is the reasoning behind circular avatars anyway? "Here, we've reserved a n x n space for your avatar, except there's that (4-π)*100% part we'll leave blank because we don't feel there's enough whitespace on this page"?
@PJH, fix this shit, pretty please?
-
I really don't see the freak out here, the onus on the avatar default style is on the forum admin, not the viewer. If the round style is not working for admins here, change it, it's one CSS rule
My fear is that this might become imposed by cropping the avatar on upload.
If it's a CSS only thing, and will remain a CSS only thing... carry on, we'll just fix it in post.
- Rounded edges feel a bit more organic and human. When we're talking about avatars of people, human is good.
Dunno, sometimes I feel like moving back in with my chimp uncle.
-
Just to be 100% clear we have no intentions of doing this in image magick, it will remain a css hack that is all
-
Its only sudden here cause somebody updated out of the beta cycle.
@apapadimoulis needed to fix email settings. Which for inexplicable reasons requires a container rebuild. Which for inexplicable reasons implies an update to latest.
Ball's in your court.
-
@PJH, fix this shit, pretty please?
I'm currently running this in Stylish:.topic-list .avatar.latest:not(.single) { box-shadow: 0px 0px 6px 1px #4EABDA; } img.avatar { border-radius: 10%; }
That'll also fight the drop-shadows in the topic list; it's on meta.d, if you want to see how shitty that looks.
Obviously the 10% can be made 0%. Or 5%. Or π%. Whatever % you/we/Gilgamesh wants ;)
@sam said:Just to be 100% clear we have no intentions of doing this in image magick, it will remain a css hack that is all

Thank you @PJH
-
/* Cancel the round avatars */ img.avatar { border-radius: 0%; }
Why does this sort of stuff happen around UK holidays when I'm not by a computer? Had to borrow a dodgy laptop with a naff space bar to get this done.
Any more CSS hackery that that missed will have to wait until tomorrow at the earliest.
-
When we're talking about avatars of people, human is good.
Good job everybody on every forum has a photo of their face as an avatar then...
-
drop-shadows
Is it just me, or do those work only when the topic has replies or something like that?
-
Aye, and your face filling the whole working area with no background, while also being awkwardly cropped because nobody has a perfectly circular face is sooo human.
Wait, no, it looks like shit.
-
Also, my hat was mostly missing under the round avatars. This alone makes it unacceptable
-
Is it just me, or do those work only when the topic has replies or something like that?
It signifies the most recent poster, so I guess so
-

Discourse — the online
forumbikeshed for the next ten years.
-
Well, bikes with round wheels work better than bikes with square wheels.
-
What's inside those pupils? Pure black, unless something has gone very, very wrong.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ophthalmoscopy and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retinal_scan would like a word with you.
-
The language you are choosing to use here is rather violent and completely unjustified
You have a BILLION more important things to be working on. YOUR FORUM IS STILL A BUGGY PIECE OF SHIT. Even the fucking idiot who proposed this said it was "bikeshedding" AND HE DID IT ANYWAY! "I am aware this is a bad stupid idea to do, but let's do it anyway!" REASSURING!
Tell you what, fix maybe ONE bug about quoting posts, and then we'll let you put in a stupid cosmetic change without getting angry. We can have a nice tit-for-tat-- you fix a bug, you get to put in stupid pointless cosmetic shit, how's that sound?
Oh wait, that won't work because you're too fucking incompetent to fix bugs. Well darn!
Kris has wanted this done for ages.
Guess how much I care about what "Kris" wants?
Someone needs to get Jeff out of the bikeshed so they can fix some bugs rather than making silly changes.
I'm starting to think they're at the point now where they literally have no developers competent to tackle any of their bugs. They've made this product such a huge ball of interconnected libraries, languages, balls of regex, even the VM container is part of it somehow, that the technical debt is through the roof.
What else explains why they're talking about all this pointless CSS bullshit instead of addressing any real problem? Even after Atwood shows some small awareness of how dumb it is?
-
@apapadimoulis needed to fix email settings. Which for inexplicable reasons requires a container rebuild. Which for inexplicable reasons implies an update to latest.
Ball's in your court.
Yeah wait a minute, WHAT THE FUCK SAM?!
How did fixing the email settings change the CSS styles? How the fuck are those even slightly related?
Goddamned you suck shit at making software. Like, I'm losing the capacity of being surprised when I hear things like this.
-
@sam said:

Guess how much I care about what "Kris" wants? This latest round of BS has changed my view of Discourse. I no longer want the bugs fixed so that it works correctly. I've gone over to the Blakey side — I want it to die, to become abandonware. Sadly, that doesn't seem likely to happen.

I'm currently running this in Stylish:
My Stylish has 137 lines for here.
It's the first time I've had to make it work over at meta though.
