So, what do we think about the new "humanizing" circular avatars?

You may be surprised that, given the dislike for them that I expressed loudly and with much vulgarity in the Status topic, I voted for the second option. As terrible as I think the change is, it's merely cosmetic. It's not a functional failure, like the markdown parser, the broken quoting, or the frequent 5xx errors.
I don't necessarily object to the circular avatars, themselves. Some of them are terribly broken, like @Buddy's, but some actually look good. What I do object to, very strongly, is the arrogance of CDCK in imposing their opinion over that of their users. Had I wanted a circular avatar, I am perfectly capable of 'shopping my avatar to be circular.
I do not consider user CSS to be a satisfactory
fixworkaround for this dictatorial fiat. It puts the onus of choosing the avatar shape on the viewer, and removes the avatar owner's ability to choose his own avatar's appearance. Let's say, for the sake of an example, that @tar decides he likes his circular avatar, but I install the CSS that makes it square; what I see is not the avatar that @tar wishes to display (unless he uploads a new, 'shopped one). Meanwhile, I see my own avatar as rectangular, but everyone else (who hasn't installed custom CSS) sees the stupid-looking circle with the edges clipped off.Fuck Jeff and his arrogance. Fuck him with a red-hot poker. My greatest hope for for CDCK's future is bankruptcy — a long, painful bankruptcy that ends with Jeff living in a cardboard box under an 880 overpass in Oakland.

I really don't see the freak out here, the onus on the avatar default style is on the forum admin, not the viewer. If the round style is not working for admins here, change it, it's one CSS rule
The language you are choosing to use here is rather violent and completely unjustified
We made a choice to change a default css rule, heck the designer of the fucking theme made the call its a better default
Maybe it don't fit you well here, fine, don't use it nobody is holding a gun to @pjh's head

Why did circular avatars just suddenly appear out of nowhere, without any warning that anyone had even proposed making this change here? It's the suddenness and arbitrariness of it that I think is what's rankling people.

Its only sudden here cause somebody updated out of the beta cycle. This has been in the making for a while Kris has wanted this done for ages.

I initially voted "Literally the worst thing ever. Make it stop!", but I thought for a second you were referring to the choice of the word "humanizing".
I changed my vote to "Meh". It's a pretty minor issue.

I went forimg.avatar { border-radius: 10%; }I like the round, I just don't like how much round. 10% looks pretty nice though; rounds off the corners without smashing avatars into oblivion
I just need to figure out how to set Stylish to use the style only on Discourse sites…

perceived salience of a corner varies linearly with the angle of the corner. Sharp angles generated stronger illusory salience than shallow angles
As the article I linked clarified: hard corners stand out more. Avatars are important; buttons are important-er. So I think creating the contrast between the two is worth it.Good thing drop-shadows look less salient than round corners, amirite?

"Here, we've reserved a n x n space for your avatar, except there's that (4-π)*100% part we'll leave blank because we don't feel there's enough whitespace on this page"?

My fear is that this might become imposed by cropping the avatar on upload.
If it's a CSS only thing, and will remain a CSS only thing... carry on, we'll just fix it in post.

Obviously the 10% can be made 0%. Or 5%. Or π%. Whatever % you/we/Gilgamesh wants ;)

I'm starting to think they're at the point now where they literally have no developers competent to tackle any of their bugs. They've made this product such a huge ball of interconnected libraries, languages, balls of regex, even the VM container is part of it somehow, that the technical debt is through the roof.
What else explains why they're talking about all this pointless CSS bullshit instead of addressing any real problem? Even after Atwood shows some small awareness of how dumb it is?

This latest round of BS has changed my view of Discourse. I no longer want the bugs fixed so that it works correctly. I've gone over to the Blakey side — I want it to die, to become abandonware. Sadly, that doesn't seem likely to happen.
