Years (decades?) ago, I was walking in the street with my mother and we saw/heard a mother chiding her child who was splashing in every puddle on the sidewalk by telling them in an angry tone:
"Stop that! Do you think walking into puddles is fun?!!?"
Well, duh.
At the very youngest level, it's "there's not much I can do, but wow, when I make this simple movement into a puddle, I get a big effect!"
The connection between children and water is strong indeed. Children + rocks + water is even stronger, but they have to be a little older.
And when they discover sticks, there goes the neighborhood!
We took the Boy Scouts (12-16 year olds) camping this weekend. There were a bunch of Cub Scouts (5-11 years) around with many sticks. Brought back memories.
When I was around my nephews and they were like 5-6, we discovered that for boys, a stick (or anything suitably stick-like) is one or both of a sword or a gun. Even if the kids have had very little exposure to images or books or videos that show such things. It's almost instinctive. Not sure about girls; I've heard that anything even roughly human-shaped is a "baby" from about the same ages.

I think it was in Readers Digest of all places where I read that parents who gave their little boys dolls and little girls trucks to play with found the boys pointing Barbies at one another and shouting "bang! bang!" and the girls cuddling and putting the Tonka loaders to bed.

Was going to say this. Though I am an exception.
My barbies battled and conspired with adventure people, GI Joe characters, and star wars characters.
My grandmother would tell me about the time she got me a doll for my birthday and how my face just dropped in disappointment.
Before I was 10 I got a microscope for Christmas, I don't remember if I explicitly asked for it or my parents noticed my interest.
There is a picture of me from that Christmas where I was sitting at the kitchen table looking into the microscope wearing the one piece red and white striped PJs (shut up, they were all the style back then).

Not really. Take a toddler to a beach with lots of stones, demonstrate once or twice that you can get a big splash by throwing a stone in the sea, and then watch as they figure out how to throw stones and just how heavy a stone they can lift and hurl. Splashes are great!

He'll get bigger in a few months and will tear those quacking things to shreds.

Not in my experience. Predator/prey rarely occurs when they are raised together.

You are correct, of course.
Although my dog loved to play with chickens he grew up with. Not all of them survived all that fun.

Many moons ago, when I played Kingdom of Loathing, I was also getting into internet radio like Shoutcast, and KoL had its own Shoutcast station. Some of the DJs liked to play Bananaphone just to troll people. Dear Lord what an earworm!
