You can take the difference of 3 and 13, and the result of that is 10, but you could also multiply 13 by 10/13! (13*10/13 = 10) Or divide by 13/10, add -3, raise to some power (smaller than 1), etc.
Are you people teaching math wrong to children on purpose? Don't you know children will actually believe any dumb shit you tell them, and try to apply it to their lives? They don't understand sarcasm! Some poor fuck is going to grow up and think that's how math actually works!

The first time I saw one of these it was something like "How does 6 + 8 make 10?", so the wording was even worse. My gut response when I saw that was "They don't. They make 14."

No, this is "Common Core". Supposedly, they are teaching kids the "shortcuts" instead of just teaching them arithmetic facts. The idea is that the kids first figure out how to get to the next multiple of ten, then add everything together because it's "easier".
At least that's how I understand what they're doing. My kids are home schooled.

- 4 and 5 get a little freaky, and end up with a little 1.

I have a shortcut for basic arithmetic work. It's in my phone's desktop, it opens up a calculator. Easy as pie. Oddly, it has no function for "get x from y".
I know you are not endorsing it, so don't take it personally, but I'm pretty sure someone is sabotaging your education infrastructure from within. You might want to have that looked at.
