WTF is up with Ukraine (no, seriously)?

  • Banned

This thread has way too little conspiracy theories.

    • The 2014 protests were inspired by CIA and were meant to substitute corrupt pro-Russian govt with equally corrupt but pro-EU govt.
    • The snipers who shot the protesters were mercenaries funded by USA and trained in Poland.
    • The Crimean referendum results were 99% for joining Russian Federation, at 132% attendance.
    • USA wants to use Ukraine crisis as an excuse for full-scale war with Russia because of the looming bankrupcy (during a war you don't have to repay the national debt).
    • Poland acts "aggressively" when it wants to help USA with their goal above, and "peacefully" when they want to help Russia by preventing the former; both of these happen at the same time (but from different political groups) because Poland is secretly run by foreign spy agencies, and the power is split pretty evenly between the three major powers (the third being Germany).
    • There was no airplane whatsoever. It's just both sides of propaganda war had the same idea at once.
    • EU doesn't want to help USA with arming Ukraine govt army because Germany, which is de facto the overlord in west Europe, wants to drive USA off the European politics and reinstitute the German-Russian alliance.
    • The maps presented by western propaganda and eastern propaganda show radically different shape of frontline; no one know how much of Ukraine is really occupied by separatists.

Anyone has some more of good ones?

    • Stalin planted the trees the rebels hide behind
    • This is all part of China's plot to destabilise Russia

Funny you mention that, because a maliciously planted tree is the key part of some conspiracy theories regarding KatyńSmoleńsk massacre. No, seriously.

You could always go with something like saying that Poland is trying to recover their territories in the East, lost at the end of the middle ages. The first part of the plan is to destabilise Ukraine…

  • Banned

Well, there's an unconfirmed rumor started by our former minister of foreign affairs that some years ago, Putin offered a deal to our prime minister to partition Ukraine so that Poland gets back Lviv.

  • I don't buy that. Poland = NATO and Vlad doesn't want a common border with NATO. That's also the reason Russia is not annexing the rebel's territory, but letting them have their own satellite country.

We should've just shut up when given the occasion, given that more poor countries in the EU = less eurobucks for us. But someone probably thought supporting a heroic freedom fight would net some good government PR by massaging our national boner (and with Russia to boot) - except that backfired pretty much worse than it worked given Poland's history with Ukraine, and the fact that no matter what the government does, people will always find a way to turn it evil.

  • almondiga (wrong new way of saying albondiga)

    I prefer 'mitbol'.

  • I have just been informed that there may have been a census of (some?) military-aged citizens, ostensibly for non-committal purposes. Before I put my crazy hat on all the way, is that a) actually true, and b) what's the actual purpose of this.

    Paging @Gaska and @Maciejasjmj.

I've heard about the plans quite a while back, but it seems nothing came out of it. And I kinda prefer it that way, since I have no fucking clue where my military papers are...

    Ah, good old FUD then.

Well, if I understood correctly, the "census" is a normal thing that was always around here. It used to classify people depending on their fitness for army and getting people conscripted for basic training. Nowadays, it's only the classifying part. It has nothing to do with the war going on.

However, there were rumors some time ago about reservist soldiers (ie. random people, because until recently everyone used to be reservist due to the above) getting call of duty and receiving military training.

True, but somebody should tell them, because neither the Germans nor their politicians seem to have accepted that fact.

    @Gaska said:

Not even remotely likely to happen as long as the CDU is the strongest party. Also, Germany is more likely to underestimate its power than to overestimate it (see above).

Who, apart from Gerhard Schröder himself, would want that?

There are four major western European powers. Germany is only really interested in economic power at the moment; that's likely to come back to bite them hard, as their insistence on only really promoting domestic economic strength is annoying a lot of people. France is saner, but economically quite weak and very occupied elsewhere (principally in Africa). The UK is largely disengaged with European politics, which is fucking idiotic and leads to some decisions that are clearly going to enflame things more (I don't have a very high opinion of my government). And Italy… is a dratted basket case, and has been for as long as I can remember.

Short-sighted idiocy is the name of the game, I'm afraid.

Well, obviously, their focus has historical reasons. Just imagine Poland's reaction if a German politician would publicly declare Germany Europe's leading power.

Oh yes, I know. There are some very good reasons for this (and Poland would definitely not be the only country to be deeply worried by a switch to more military spending) but the result is still highly dysfunctional and gives Russia a much freer hand than they otherwise would have.

It's a godawful mess, and some people are going to have to really not get their way in order for it to cease to be a mess…

I think the Germans would be pretty upset by it, too. Western Europe has gotten very used to free riding on the US' giant expenditures.

It's not our fault that your choice of news media is so badly biased as to omit key facts like that.

UKIP have attracted a substantial number of petty racists, which has given them a large enough membership to actually be able to contest quite a few seats at the next general election. The leadership are quite embarrassed by this, but not so as to completely disown them: that (plus a lot of disenchantment with the main parties) is their main route to votes. Yet it is also quite self-limiting; racism isn't a platform that outright wins elections here. Their support is not evenly distributed geographically; the big cities will be difficult for UKIP to make much ground in (due to larger numbers of naturalised immigrant electors and their descendants), and they have a lot of seats.

This May will be “interesting”. Things are looking rather more fluid than they've been for decades.

That is the case in many coalition governments. The small party has the power to cause the government to collapse by pulling out of the coalition, and they use that threat to dictate government policy.

a/á, e/é, o/ö, u/ü are easy, the pronunciation is different. i/í, o/ó, ö/ő and ü/ű are short-long versions of the same vowel though, so you can tell a person is uneducated when they confuse them.
