Windows 10 Upgrade to be Free as in Beer (if you don't have an MS account, come in here and @blakeyrat will give you $50)

Yeah, but KOTOR was released in 2003 and ME1 in 2007. My point is that apparently no one on the ME team even played KOTOR, or they would have said "hey guys, you know how our inventory management system is shit? it's way better in KOTOR; let's grab some code from that project."
-
There was KOTOR2 between the two, and that was a fustercluck. It's easy for developers to lose sight of what worked when that happens.

[Shadowrun Returns and Shadowrun: Dragonfall talk]
That reminds me, I have spare Steam keys of each I'm sitting on.
-
Usually have more fun with those than ones from 2014
Generally that holds true... except for FPS games. Most of the pre-2000 ones have aged really, really badly. Not in terms of graphics (you can get a HD/texture mod for pretty much any significant game if you really need one), or story (some of those are classics for a reason), but by God the gameplay can be atrocious. Especially in the more story driven ones where you'd gladly give up all the clunky shooting just to get the plot, but you can't.
-
-
And even the scary-serious fans of the game have apparently not managed to unbreak it totally, despite putting a lot of effort in.
My point was that such disasters have a tendency to put developers off examining a codebase.

Farmed out to a different developer

Why would they examine a codebase they didn't ever touch or have anything to do with?
LOGIC!

I have finally gotten around to giving Windows 10 a try. I am still underwhelmed by any Windows past Win7. I have yet to see a reason to upgrade. Is there anything I am missing? True, the start menu is back, so definite improvement there. They completely filled it with crap that I have to unpin right off the bat. Cortana cannot be used without a MS account and I have no desire for a MS account linked to my computer. Not quite sure how they are going to handle that in reference to domain accounts.
Also, as I am running it in VMWare, I cannot try out the latest Hyper-V. What am I missing? What features have I not found yet that might make me want to upgrade?
-

Easy: Cortana will be disabled on domain accounts.
-
Well, that will remove yet another reason why enterprise might want to switch...
-
Well, that will remove yet another reason why enterprise might want to switch...
I can't really see enterprise having much use for her in the first place, tbh.
-
Why can't I resize the Start Menu like on earlier builds?
Reduced the Metro squares into a single column, and now there's a big empty area as it's not reduced in width.
-
I have finally gotten around to giving Windows 10 a try. I am still underwhelmed by any Windows past Win7.
Gee. What a shocker.
I have yet to see a reason to upgrade.
Holy crap, this sentence blew me away-- it's the exact opposite you'd expect from that grumpy old goat!
Is there anything I am missing?
A trillion things, as we've discussed in past threads. But the most important thing you're missing is this:
Your being a Luddite doesn't reflect on the quality of the OS.
You're not happy with Windows 8 or Windows 10. Fine. But you wouldn't be happy with any upgrade (or, hell, any change whatsoever), so who gives a shit what you think?
Cortana cannot be used without a MS account and I have no desire for a MS account linked to my computer.
Apple's required one for like 5 years, but when Microsoft does it suddenly it's this horrible awful abomination unto God. Get over yourself.
I can't really see enterprise having much use for her in the first place, tbh.
If they hook it to Outlook, Cortana'd be amazing.
-
Apple's required one for like 5 years, but when Microsoft does it suddenly it's this horrible awful abomination unto God.
Why does Apple require a MS account?
Seriously, though, what made you think this was a reasonable argument?
-
Hilarious.

Not grumpy, it just seems like Discourse. A bunch of fiddling around with UI (and making it worse...) with no improvements otherwise that I can see.
Your being a Luddite doesn't reflect on the quality of the OS.
I am not a Luddite either. Pretty far from it. I just see no reason to change. Why should enterprise customers change? What compelling reason do they have? Win7 does everything that they need it to. All of our customers have stuck with Win7 because there is no reason to go any farther than that. Enterprise customers all across the planet are saying the same thing. Win8 adoption rates are absolute rubbish.
You're not happy with Windows 8 or Windows 10. Fine. But you wouldn't be happy with any upgrade (or, hell, any change whatsoever), so who gives a shit what you think?
But you know what I am happy with? Server 2012 and 2012R2. Amazing server OS's. Tons of new features that are actually helpful like deduplication, Work Folders, 2012 Essentials, improvements to all server functionality across the board.
Win8 and Win10 just seem like the same but with a different UI. Now, I am quite happy that they got rid of that shitty fucking Start screen. That was a fucking train wreck and if this were Communist Russia, whomever came up with that idea would have been taken out back and shot.
Apple's required one for like 5 years, but when Microsoft does it suddenly it's this horrible awful abomination unto God. Get over yourself.
I don't care for Apple either. I have an Android phone, that requires me to have a Google sign-in and that does not bother me either...because I already use fucking GMail. An MS account to use OS features is just rubbish. Just let me use the features and fuck your superfluous sign-in bullshit.
God, you are a miserable fuck.
-
Like you ignore the fact that you said something stupid?
He seems to be ignoring a lot lately...
-
If they hook it to Outlook, Cortana'd be amazing.
But...Outlook would still be rubbish. So Cortana would be rubbish. ;)
-
A bunch of fiddling around with UI (and making it worse...) with no improvements otherwise that I can see.
Let's turn it around. What improvement would convince you? Can you think of anything Microsoft could put in the OS to make you eager to buy Windows 10?
I got $50 you cannot.
I am not a Luddite either. Pretty far from it.
Actions > Words
I just see no reason to change. Why should enterprise customers change? What compelling reason do they have?
How about because users like me who use Windows 8.1 at home get kind of annoyed and pissed-off at the stuff I can't do in Windows 7 at work? (The taskbar across monitors thing, for example.)
Win8 and Win10 just seem like the same but with a different UI. Now, I am quite happy that they got rid of that shitty fucking Start screen. That was a fucking train wreck and if this were Communist Russia, whomever came up with that idea would have been taken out back and shot.
What makes it so awful?

You don't use anything that requires a Microsoft account? You've never used an Xbox, or Skype, or Hotmail, or a Windows Phone or a Surface or one of their new fitness bands whatever its called or... anything?
I don't believe you. Especially on Skype.
-
He does have a point about the whole being forced to have an MS account just to use certain OS features though. There's no real reason Cortana should be limited only to those with an MS account; after all, she only uses it to store things like working hours and hobbies. She'd still work well enough without that info.
-
I don't believe you. Especially on Skype.
Why is this outrageous? Am I like the only person who's never used it? OK, I installed it once, a long time ago, before MS bought it. But I don't recall ever successfully using it.
-
Not quite sure how they are going to handle that in reference to domain accounts.
Same as in 8?
-
Let's turn it around. What improvement would convince you? Can you think of anything Microsoft could put in the OS to make you eager to buy Windows 10?
I got $50 you cannot.
A version of Hyper-V on the desktop that was not entire rubbish. An initial state that did not have shit all over it that I had to delete, unpin or uninstall. The amount of crap that covers a freshly installed 8, 8.1 or 10 start screen/menu is alarming. It feels like you just bought the cheapest computer that Best Buy offers that is subsidized with crapware so that they can make a profit at that price point.
So, you want to send that $50 by PayPal or do you want to mail me a check?
Actions > Words
My actions only show that I will not consume any festering turd that MS puts out just because I always wish I had the chance to fellate Bill Gates while he was CEO.
What makes it so awful?
Because it is entirely unnecessary. Because it completely takes up the entire screen that you open it on and interrupts everything. Because it is a rubbish idea.
You don't use anything that requires a Microsoft account? You've never used an Xbox, or Skype, or Hotmail, or a Windows Phone or a Surface or one of their new fitness bands whatever its called or... anything?
I don't believe you. Especially on Skype.
Believe it. Why would I use Skype? Why would I want an application installed on my computer that thinks it is best if it starts on every boot and clicking on the X does not kill it and then you have to search through its shitty menus to stop it from doing something you never told it to do in the first place? I deleted Spotify because of that. It is like malware.
I have never owned an XBox (not a gamer), I quit Hotmail many years ago when I was one of the first to switch to GMail and if I get a fitness band/smart watch it will be a Gear Fit.
-
-
Hook it to Outlook, Cortana'd be amazing.
Hook it into Office ... And onedrive, one note, ...
-
ortana is available in Win8?
Ms accounts and domain are already pretty linked in 8.
-
Fair enough. Personal MS account or company MS account?
-
Why is this outrageous? Am I like the only person who's never used it? OK, I installed it once, a long time ago, before MS bought it. But I don't recall ever successfully using it.
@blakeyrat can make that $50 for each of us then. ;)
-
I think I've played on a friend's xbox a time or two. I've never gotten the hang of those crazy controllers, though, so I was never very good.
-
There we go. @blakeyrat owes us both $50.
-
Oh, and we are both apparently Luddites...
-
Everyone who hates the Windows 8(.1) Start Screen is a Luddite or scared of change.
IT IS NOT POSSIBLE that people might just prefer the Windows 7 Start Menu.Apparently.
-
Oh, and we are both apparently Luddites...
No doubt. I'll cop to it, if it means that I don't just jump on the latest and greatest simply for the purpose of doing so.
-
Personal MS account
Personal because my pro account is obviously linked through the office installation / 356 stuff
-

Apparently.
Well, in the interests of disclosure, I do collect antique woodworking tools so in some ways I am guilty as charged. But, I also have a server rack in my basement so I am pretty sure that puts me firmly outside of the "Luddite" column.
-

Is it standing next to a mainframe?
-
Am I like the only person who's never used it?
Nope, I've never touched Skype. At least not that I can recall. I have MS accounts for 2 main uses:
- An old throw away email account that I've had for ages. Great for potential spam scenarios.
- An actual account linked to my work email since I manage our MSDN subscriptions.
-
Here's my thought on the subject: I do a pretty freaking wide variety of activities on computers. Since Win8 came out, I have yet to say, "I can't do X on Win7, I need Win 8/8.1 for that..."
There is no compelling reason for upgrade. I am also underwhelmed when I check out the newest OS's. When I moved from XP to 7 (because Vista was rubbish), it was a "Wow!" moment. Everything worked more smoothly, more logically laid out and the move to a 64-bit OS made for a very compelling reason to upgrade. Now when I try out new OS's, it is just...meh.
-
Is it standing next to a mainframe?
Ha! Nope. I don't feel like upgrading the power feed. ;)
-
The only thing I miss using Windows 7 at work (compared to 8.1 at home) is having the task bar across all monitors, and that's hardly a deal breaker.
I strongly dislike the Win 8(.1) Start Screen, which according to a few here means I'm scared of change, but it's trivial to make it go away so it's not a deal breaker the other way either.
-
The only thing I miss using Windows 7 at work (compared to 8.1 at home) is having the task bar across all monitors, and that's hardly a deal breaker.
Yeah, I see that as a "nice to have", but by no means essential. I use Alt+Tab a lot anyway, unless I have a whole lot of stuff open.
-
A version of Hyper-V on the desktop that was not entire rubbish.
Seriously? For a desktop OS, that's on your wish list?
An initial state that did not have shit all over it that I had to delete, unpin or uninstall.
You don't have to delete, unpin, or uninstall any of it. You want to.
I quit Hotmail many years ago
So you do have an MS account.
But, I also have a server rack in my basement so I am pretty sure that puts me firmly outside of the "Luddite" column.
Depends; are they OS/360?
-
I've been trying out 10. It seems like a slightly nicer version of 8, which is enough to make it worth the £0 cost to upgrade from 7
-
Seriously? For a desktop OS, that's on your wish list?
Because no-one runs Linux in a VM, or a WP8 emulator for testing their apps, obviously.Y'know, apart from those that do.
-
Seriously? For a desktop OS, that's on your wish list?
Absolutely. As a developer I would think you would see the benefit of having virtualization on a desktop that is not utter rubbish. Right now, I gladly spend $250 for VMWare Workstation in order to get the functionality.
You don't have to delete, unpin, or uninstall any of it. You want to.
Well, if I don't want it cluttered up with crap, I have to.
So you do have an MS account.
Do you know what "quit" means? I will spell it out for you as you appear to have had an embolism or something...I do not have a Hotmail account and have not for many years.
Depends; are they OS/360?
Negative. A couple of them are running Server 2012R2, there is probably a 2008R2 server in there but the majority are running XenServer.
-

An actual account linked to my work email since I manage our MSDN subscriptions. You were so close to @blakeyrat owing you $50 also.
-
You were so close to @blakeyrat owing you $50 also.
I know, but work and throw away accounts beckoned. :'(
-
I think we should grant you a reprieve due to the circumstances...and to help drain @blakeyrat's bank account.
