Sexy sexism talk

This sounds outrageous:
Ms. Smith, 50, an M.I.T.-trained mechanical engineer and former Google executive, is working hard to bring her Silicon Valley sensibility to the Obama administration. But four months into her job as the chief technology officer of the United States, the woman whose division at Google dreamed up Google Glass and the driverless car is facing culture shock in a federal bureaucracy ruled by creaky technology and run in part on the floppy disk.
...
How much Ms. Smith will be able to haul the Obama administration away from floppy disks is another question.I'm not familiar with WH IT, but I've been exposed to a bit of executive branch IT, and they seem fairly good about keeping relatively new technology in use. I remember seeing zip drives over a decade ago, but I haven't seen floppies around at all since 2001.
Is this stupid sensationalist reporting or is the WH really that much of a backwater?
-
run in part on the floppy disk
Could well mean "one legacy system that hasn't ever been updated loads settings off a floppy"
-

I'm going to assume the opposite, that Obama physically plugs a floppy disk into a 286 to read his daily briefings.
-
this has to be true! why else is the navy so concerned about high altitude nuclear bursts causing massive EMP?
i mean everyone knows that those only cause trouble for magnetic media! and the only magnetic media left that's vulnerable due to improper shielding is the floppy disk.
also, have you ever noticed that for something called "floppy" they are decidedly rigid?
am i the only one that sees this?
wake up sheeple!
/me takes off tin foil hat and puts it on top of a scarecrow with a loudspeaker that continues to shout crackpit theories to anyone who hasn't run away yet
-

Only those new-fangled little ones.
-
Not surprised. Our Social Security Bureau had an offer to buy 130k floppies as recently as in 2008.
Sure, that's Poland, but even we weren't that behind the times.
-
Only those new-fangled little ones.
well yes. this is true.
if the WH runs on the 3.5" ones. the FBI must run on the 8" ones!
-

I'm sure he has a guy to plug it in, print them, photograph them on a wooden table, scan the photograph and send it to his iPad for him

Apparently called a "Body Man."
I must admit, I'd never heard the term before Obama. Always just Personal Aide / Assistant.
-
-
-
also, have you ever noticed that for something called "floppy" they are decidedly rigid?
Only 3.5" floppies. The bigger ones (5.25" and 8") are pretty flexible.
-
Only those new-fangled little ones.
The bigger the disk, the floppier it is.I'm sure there's a pun in there somewhere...
-
I'm sure there's a pun in there somewhere
No, I can think of no way in which any mention of 3.5" floppies could lead to a pun, or any sort of humour
-
Misogynist! Is should be Body Person Of Irrelevant Gender
I don't understand why one wouldn't use Personal Assistant / Aide. Seriously, has anyone actually heard the term applied to anyone except Reggie Love?
-
I'm sure there's a pun in there somewhere..
only if i try to type it, then it's an innuendo.
-
In your endo.
-
-
I don't understand why one wouldn't use Personal Assistant / Aide
'Personal Assistant' is the favoured term in the UK, in my experience
-
This was in the news about a year ago. We discussed it. There's some government office that uses floppies to do pension paperwork IIRC. I'm on mobile, someone look up the last thread.
-
-
You're putting more thought into this than I did.
-
Depends which end, surely?
i'm not letting a smoker anywhere near any of my ends.

That doesn't sound like "The White House."
-
Dogs are OK though?
not guaranteed, depends on which end and intention.
obviously they're vetoed for that
-
-
-
Lazy journalists frequently used "the white house" to mean the executive branch. You're not an infant, you know this. Stop being a dumb ass.
-
How many screens of paperwork can be stored on a floppy disk?
-
*.BMP, *.PNG, *.DOC, or *.MD
-
*.DOCX
-
-
oh..... in that case exactly 0.5 pages per dickette
In fact, for prosperity:
Even if that's deliberate, it's worth saving.
-
dickette
Anyone else, I'd buttume this was intentional. With your typo rate I'm not so sure
-
Even if that's deliberate, it's worth saving.
deliberate? accident? little bit of both actually.
i typo'd it the first time, but got distracted by coworker on lunch. then turned back and read to make sure i was done talking, noticed typo, laughed, and decided to roll with it.
-

That's true about lazy journalists, and I guess they do refer to the Administration in the body of the story.
But...Did you read my post? I've never seen anything like this in my first hand experience with several parts of the executive branch (going back to Obama's predecessor, even). I even asked for people to provide other examples.
I bow to no one in criticizing "creaky federal bureaucracies," but I'm not aware of any that run on floppy disks. Actually, it wouldn't terribly surprise me if BIA still did. Those guys are hopelessly backwards.

"Indian"
How about Native American?
Wait, that includes Eskimos?
Um, Native Continental American?
"none are accepted by all indigenous groups" from wikipedia
Oh boy!?
Maybe we should just stop identifying by ethnicity.
"used the term as derogatory"
Well yeah, any term can be used by someone as derogatory.
At some point, "human" is going to be derogatory. Just wait, I've played Deus Ex.
-
Here's one:
Pretty small thing, especially if that's what this article is referencing. I can't find any evidence of a thread at TDWTF. TFA (and seemingly everything else) links back to NYT:
But The Federal Register continues to accept [floppies], in part because legal and security requirements have yet to be updated, but mostly because the wheels of government grind ever slowly.
Apparently no one wanted to use the PKI stuff because it was "too expensive." Eh, who knows. Maybe that's all this article was talking about.
-
Dude, ok, fuck, I'll spell it out:
- Journalists are fucking lazy as shit
- Everybody who reads the news remembers the news story about the government still using floppies from about a year or so ago
- This woman's job isn't SPECIFICALLY ABOUT REPLACING FLOPPY DISKS but is more general position about updating obsolete technologies all over.
Again: YOU ARE NOT THIS STUPID.
-

Um, OK? I never thought that was specifically her job. But I wondered if that sort of technological stagnation was really as big a deal as implied. I get that you just aren't that curious, but at least you remembered something relevant.
Everybody who reads the news remembers the news story about the government still using floppies from about a year or so ago
I don't recall seeing that at all. It wasn't that big a deal. Still isn't, though it definitely appears to be a minor WTF, even accounting for the NYT.

just what sort of companionship he/she/it is providing.

Government still using floppies.
If so, then true.
Job is to update obsolete technologies.
If so, then true.Given the above, the most obvious and quick to fix technology needing updating, floppy disks. Mention it as an example of creaky technology needing upgrading.
If so, then true.Given this is also a site where we only ever see the most glaring obvious failure at a client, it reflects that we'd target the government the same way.
I highly doubt that all these companies in these articles have ZERO redeeming examples of technology.
And, that's the joke.

also, have you ever noticed that for something called "floppy" they are decidedly rigid?
The disc itself is still floppy, as opposed to the rigid platters common in hard disk drives at the time. It's only the outer carrier that was rigid.
-
Any disc is floppy given sufficient heat and pressure.
