What favorite UI element will we lose next? Everything?
-
The bad ideas thread is... oh, forget it.
-
-
Exactly! Civilized discourse consists of expressing your thoughts concisely and in the simplest possible manner. Ergo, it's the maximum length that should be gradually decreased, until it reaches the lowest possible value of zero, at which point the most civilized kind of discourse can take place, with no flaming, baiting or other signs of uncivilized behavior.
How about this compromise:
Sticking with my original proposal, as the minimum post length is increased, add exceptions for posts consisting of only images and videos. This would discourage pure text communication and encourage users to simplify their ideas to the point of being able to use memes and lolcats.
Would that be acceptable?
-
I would suggest combining the two seemingly conflicting ideas:
the minimum post length is increased
the maximum length that should be gradually decreased
So after a while, the truly most civilized discussion takes place. Where nobody can post anything and therefor nothing of harm can be said.

Will you encounter fewer grammar Nazis too?

And here's the next victim:

Not really an element, though. More a style. But whatever.
-
And I'm not sure if this one counts, but there's a topic working to eliminate the green bar in favor of a more user friendly option:
I confess, I'm actually helping with this one.
-
I just read the title in it's entirety for the first time.
Is Jeffwood acknowledging the Grey? Discourse is an alien conspiracy! I knew it all along!
I reserve my right to still use Rimmer images, regardless of the avatar.
-
I confess, I'm actually helping with this one.
No one actually likes that thing, though.
-
Does that mean we may come to have an ugly green scrollbar instead?

Current mock-ups indicate blue.

Contrary to the opinions of a few select individuals here, it's not wrong to want to help improve something you use every day ;)

But unlike a certain Spiny, I'm only contributing my opinion. I will not be dirtying my hands by touching discode.

At least my code contribution doesn't meet those definitions

Re: tiger striping....I know there was some chatter in the status thread. Has anyone recorded what we have now so we can put it back in after they break it here?
-
You sure? ;)
-
You sure? ;)
Yes:- It's necessary to keep the number display in certain places sensible
- You see it in action every time the Likes thread is listed on the main page
- It does what it's meant to
- It only does what it's meant to
- …damn you!
-

Well, the colors are #FFFFFF and #F7F7F7. The problem is, there doesn't seem to be a way to easily identify which row gets which color without using some scripting:

Yes there is:
http://what.thedailywtf.com/t/the-luxury-advanced-status-thread-with-beautiful-discussions-on-par-with-pro-level/1673/18333?u=raceprouk
-

And got it:
table.ember-view.topic-list tbody tr:nth-child(odd) { background-color: #F7F7F7; } table.ember-view.topic-list tbody tr:nth-child(even) { background-color: #FFFFFF; }
Thanks @RaceProUK
We may need to do some additional stuff to remove the new borders, but this is at least a start.
Edit: Some testing on meta.d reveals this should do the trick to eliminate the new borders:
table.ember-view.topic-list tbody tr { border-style: none; }

I know we like to reverse stupid CSS changes here like the round avatars and the missing arrows, but do we have to reverse every single CSS change from upstream?
Are people really so incensed by this change that it has to be overridden?
Is the new style actually any less readable than the tiger striping?
-
-
And I dont.
Look, we undo a lot of the CSS stuff because we don't want changes we think are wrong to be forced on us. But there comes a point where our reversals become exactly the same problem; I think this is that point.
-
-
And are you sure this isn't just 'Jeff changed CSS, WE MUST CHANGE IT BACK'? As in people have actually given it some thought, done some proper side-by-side comparisons, and determined that tiger striping is in fact better?
-

Yes. I've given up on hating Jeff and now I just pity him.

Moving horizontally, I find it much easier to keep track of the rows with the striping than with the new borders. And since the coloration of the striping is so subdued, it doesn't really affect the readability of the text on a properly adjusted monitor.

*goes to compare WTDWTF to meta.d*

Well, we're going to disagree here, but I'm open to opinions.

+<hr>
FWIW, most of the changes I don't really give a flying belgian about (Circular avatars, for instance...). The shading actually makes it a lot more readable IMO.
-
-
I don't care whether we "overturn" it or not.
I just care that the Discourse team is wasting time with this bullshit when they could be fixing the thousands of actual genuine bugs.
Their product doesn't work at all on Windows Phone 8, and they're tweaking styles. It's ridiculous.
-
Is the new style actually any less readable than the tiger striping?
I'm going to add my "Yes".
You ever notice they sell greenbar tractor feed paper, but they don't sell lined tractor feed paper?
Jeff's even right when he says it's less important with fewer columns. That doesn't mean he's absolutely right that this change is better.

The more I look at the style on meta.d, the more I hate it.
-
The next UI element we lose: All of them!
-
Don't forget that the suggested topics lists also need to be selector'd.
-
And yes, polar bear stripes are just bad.
Zebras and tigers are much more preferable.
-
Don't forget that the suggested topics lists also need to be selector'd.
The CSS I wrote up handles those, too. :P
-
Can we please call it tiger stripes, not... the z thing? I have... a history with that word.
On a serious note - yes, stripes please, readability. If it gets removed globally it's going into my Stylish sheet right away.
-
For here, it'll likely be added to the TDWTF theme

slowly rocks in the corner in a foetal position

Were you run over at a z-thing crossing?

Thank you, and thanks to @aliceif for bringing it up again.

You mean these?

I've dealt with them too.
I have a task coming up quickly on my to-do list that requires me to print labels using one of those abominations.
I'm stalling as long as possible.
-
print labels using one of those abominations
Am I crazy that I didn't find it all that bad to make them print labels? Honestly, ESC/POS was worse.

Did I mention I have to do it from a web app?
