What favorite UI element will we lose next? Everything?

Dear Diary: TIL that Discourse == Porn. There was much rejoicing.
How Discourse is like porn:
- People say "FUCK" a lot while using it
- The creation of it is basically just some dude randomly spraying things everywhere and seeing what sticks
- Umm... something about @sockbot and masturbation?
How Discourse is not like porn:
- The porn industry actually knows how to design an interactive website
- They listen to, and actually cater to, the needs and habits of their end-users
- They understand how basic technology works
- Will gladly film a video of a crackwhore licking the assholes of a dozen random men, but wouldn't in a million years consider doing something as disgusting as using Discourse?
It is not often the two of us agree with something.... This is one of those occasions.

You had my attention... shame about the followthrough. :-D

Additional reason:
Lots of white

Wait… are you flirting with SockBot?

I guess that's one way to spawn a new process…

That's what you consider flirting?

Not a problem; I'd be too busy with @accalia ;)

Totally viable on mobile. Oh, wait...
Filed under: Discourse wasn't made to be used on mobile, or in general
Jumping back to the logout issue, I had a few points I wanted to add to the discussion, so I flagged to ask that it be unarchived and reopened. They asked what I wanted to contribute so I posted this in the flag:
@abarker said:
Actually, since generating this flag, I've come up with a couple more:
- The keyboard shortcut that is in the works only benefits desktop users. The keyboard shortcut is not a viable solution for users on mobile devices. Any of the reasons that a user might want to log out on a desktop could potentially apply on a mobile platform as well.
- Having the logout link/button only available from the profile page not only adds an additional click, but for some installs, adds an additional delay. For example, on WTDWTF, the average user needs to wait 3-6 seconds for the profile page to load. A staff member needs to wait 2-3 times that long because of the additional data being gathered. This additional delay just to log out would frustrate a user who just wants to terminate their session, for whatever reason.
- A keyboard shortcut could be triggered by accident. To mitigate this, the keyboard shortcut would need to bring up a "Are you sure?" type dialog, which could generate another set of frustrations. Another option would be to make the shortcut involve multiple keys, but that would be difficult to use and remember.
Then if you were to combine the first two points, you have a mobile user who wants to log out and now needs to worry about the extra load on their data plan while potentially being aggravated by several seconds of wait time.
People are used to seeing Log Out links on most every site, and avoid them with ease. If the link gets left and the keyboard shortcut added, then you have a standard UI that really frustrates no one because it is basically the standard. If you remove the link and add the shortcut, then you have the potential for frustrating a small group of people. And while it is a small group, it is more than you would frustrate by leaving the link always visible.
Didn't lead to the topic getting reopened, but I did get 3 likes and this response:

Looks like we are going to make this a site setting for now @abarker... my issue is that I've literally logged out of Discourse 3 times in the last 3 years.
So it looks like the Log Out link will be available in (one of) the menus as a site setting.

So because Jeff never does it, no-one else ever does it therefore it's a non-issue.
Hmm, where have I seen this discologic before?

Looks like we unknowingly took two complementary approaches. ;)

Oh sure, I bring good news, and you go and focus on the negative aspect.

Between you and @sam, you've successfully reversed what would have been a huge mistake

You forgot a point. Considering they based some of their design decisions on Google and Gmail, they didn't get rid of the Log Out link in Gmail:
-
I only had two goals, 1) express why it needed to be added back, when that quickly failed and got closed/archived before I could return to add any more info, I went with 2), produce a plugin that gained a lot of attention and traction that hopefully lead it to being introduced into core (again).
Granted, I'm sure it is off by default, but nonetheless, it is a small victory.

Since Jeff closed the prior conversation, I only made the plugin to help them realize how many actually wanted it.
Great work, I wondered how long it would take for that to happen. I checked that post several times throughout the day, and I was impressed with how fast it gained likes. It was a great way to show how many people wanted such a feature.
-
sigh Core's functionality actually doesn't work, PR submitted (I'm glad someone tests these things... lol)
Merged, all better now

Everytime you post that gif, I find myself wanting a pet hedgehog just a little more.

That's the first sign. Quick, leave. Now. Don't come back and NEVER LOOK AT... wait, what's tha... OHGODTHEQUILLSTHEYBUURNNNN

Fortunately for me, Arizona law makes it nearly impossible for me to do so. The regulations are so strict, that even zoos have a difficult time complying.

So all you had to do was get into a multi-thread argument, learn to program in another language, spend days/weeks learning how to work with Djangocorpse's API, and then write a plug-in that preemptively re-implements a core feature-- all to just MAYBE have the feature hidden by default (though most likely still removed from the product because Jeff).
Victory!

I guess the hedgehogs in Arizona have to be free animals, not caged pets.

To be fair, what we had to do to get bugs fixed is:
- Make a new topic either here or on meta.d
- Explain rationally why a given thing in discourse doesn't work
- ignore random Jeff-post
- wait for somebody to add something sensible
- find out that said thing not working is actually a feature
- complain that this "feature" is stupid
- ignore another meme post from Jeff
- get into a giant argument on TDWTF with the devs
- wait 5 days for that to calm down
- tell them to use a bug tracker
- wait another 5 days for the spawning argument to die down
- bump the original bug-topic
- wait until more important things (like dark theme) have been bikeshedded
- wait some more until a other users chime in and request the same thing
- get told that somebody needs to write a plug in for that
- wait for @cpradio to actually write a plug in
- get told that it might get added to core in 10 years
- message PJH to add cpradios plugin to TDWTF
- Watch the plug in not work on the next update because everything changes and your "feature" has actually been implemented but only if it is activated by 3 admins via shell on a full moon!

Addendum: And No, "not using Discouse" is - as you know - not an option!

I'm sure there's a porn-related site using Discourse somewhere.
Can't really search for that at work, though.

I especially liked how discodevs installed it because they log out a lot.

Why would a porn firm need a bugtracker?
I think the performers get STD tests every other week or so. That's a lot of potential bugs to track.
