What favorite UI element will we lose next? Everything?
-
oh.
confused the heck out of me why you picked that post. yuou just needed a victim thread and that was latest.
got it.
-
BTW, Jeff really loves their custom look, so expect default Discourse style to move in this direction
They even cut the # of posts from the topic lists! Which makes it hard to find a longer thread so you can see what happens with that awful...well, shit, I was going for something like stepping disclevator, but that might actually be cool if it existed, and I wouldn't want to suggest Discurse had a cool feature.
-
Replies column in topic list? I still see that, on meta.d and polygonalweave.
-
Oh, you gotta drill down into the categories. I missed that.
-
You can barely even see its progress color.
On my laptop, from certain screen angles, it's invisible here.
-
The circular newlevator is idiocy personified though.
Indeed. Even if you buy Jeff's argument that rounded things look more humanized, WhyTF would a newlevator have to humanized? It's not a representation of a person, it's a thing!

RIP Notifications Bubble (2013-2015)
-
-
-
I have a hypothesis that by the time we're done with the mystical "10 years" figure, Discourse will run perfectly because it will have the same amount of features as
about:blank
.
-
-
Though, to defend the way it's set up on meta.d at the moment, putting the notifications in the "profile" menu and putting most of the other stuff in the hamburger isn't completely bad or counter-intuitive (and I assume you'll still get the green/blue bubbles when you have new notifications, haven't had any recent meta notifications to confirm or deny that).
And at least they haven't changed the header color yet
-

JUST BECAUSE IT'S NOT COMPLETELY BAD DOES NOT MEAN IT IS A GOOD IDEA!

RIP Notifications Bubble (2013-2015)
I'm still getting notifications bubbles. Am I Doing It Wrong™?
-
meta.d runs newer code than we do here; they tend to deploy pretty much everything straight away
-
Why does an icon obviously representing my profile hold information about the notifications?
Discourse seems like it's taking the principle of least surprise, and violently raping it in the back alley. I mean, I agree that the split between hamburger and profile menu is badly thought out now, but getting rid of the obvious metaphor for notifications and stuffing them under the now-useless user icon because eh, we had some space over there? What the hell?
If I had to pinpoint Discourse's greatest sin, it would be its egotism. They don't care about making it obvious, familiar to those coming from different software, or at least easy to intuitively figure out. Nope, it's Discourse, and our software is more important than your content.
-

Like if that's working 100% now...
-
Oh hey, now instead of just "bookmarks" and "profile" all the options from the profile menu are back under the profile menu.
Jesus fucking Christ. You have a mess of an upper menu, so how do you solve it?
a) Merge the two functionally similar menus which have no clear rules as to which item comes to which, and get rid of one of them
b) Get rid of the most obvious metaphor in possibly the whole Discourse - the notifications bubble - and instead stuff the notifications into the profile menu, while also doing nothing about the aforementioned issue because FUCK YOU THAT'S WHY.

oi! that's my image meme! find your own!
-
Next up: Sub-menus, all hidden under the menu ξ, with all the items neatly ordered alphabetically
by the Nth letter from the end, where N is randomly chosen for every incantation to summon the menu.

Erm. User defined?

*smells a new discoterm*

-sigh- i'll go propose it..

Meh, I am also one of the fraction that doesn't think that change is the worst thing in Discourse history.
I think that you just got too used to the glyph because it has always been there. At your first login you get a message from Discourse showing you your first PM. Thats how you find out where the little bubbles go. I think if they went to the user-icon right away, you would not miss the speechbubble!
I also welcome that they increase the menu-size. If you removed the Style-links from TDWTF then that menu would be 5 items high. I feel like full-height (sidebar like) menus could be pretty good, if they filled them with stuff. They went away from full height and just made the big now, though. Oh well, still more information, I guess.
Btw. does anybody here have any ideas where to put the style-links once we update to the new menus?
What I really don't understand is Jeffs hatred for glyphs at the top right. I don't know if it's because he uses mobile more than me or something like that, but I don't think 4 glyphs are any sort of problem. Especially since the horizontal space on monitors is pretty big. So either JDGI, or IDGI. Whatever the case, let's wait and see what they make of the menu!
Filed Under: Always remember that even though Discourse has been officially released, it is still kind of in a beta-state!

With the new update on meta.d, it's now this:
Which actually goes a long way to resolving the issues I had with the change in the first place.Having said that, Jeff's also put his foot down on removing the Log Out link by making it very clear that any further discussion about it will be removed with prejudice

Someone gave him a perfectly legitimate use case for Log Out, and he basically did this:
Though with 100% less cute

That man seriously needs to stop participating in the forum and get a proper PR guy (or gal) to do his PR for him. Because he is terrible at PR!

Maybe we can pay blakeyrat to do PR for Jeff!
Filed Under: Not sure what ideas topic this is!

honestly some days i think he'd do a better job.

WHOA THERE.
He (@wood) said (in another topic) that a keyboard shortcut is a fully adequate replacement for an important easy-to-reach button?IS HE COMPLETELY ENTIRELY POSITIVELY NUTS?!
-
But you can easily find those shortcuts if you find the ? shortcut which may or may not work and will show you maybe working shortcuts.
See, totally simple!
Filed Under: But yeah, I don't understand that, either
-
This is just a whole new level of stupid and it makes me feel sick.
-
My favorite is the part where he tells the OP what he meant to say, repeatedly, then "agrees to disagree" on what he was actually trying to express.
Civilized discourse: you only make the points Jeff wants you to make!
-
oi! that's my image meme! find your own!
That's a stock meme and I was using it--IRL mind; I once printed it out and taped it to a vending machine--before you had an account here.

-grumble-

I really need to make my own custom memes.....

removing the Log Out link
So how do you log out now, delete cookies or something?
No, wait, this is Discurse. You probably have to clear local storage instead.
-
No, nothing as drastic as that; you either have to go to your profile pages (and suffer the associated 5s+ waiting time), or use an undiscoverable keyboard shortcut
-
I really need to make my own custom memes.....
You pick the weirdest things to get your jimmies rustled about.

Ugh.
@atwood you are a fucking idiot.
ETA: Interesting that his name doesn't generate an @-mention.

just keeping things interesting!

Actually, what you need to realize is that Jeff doesn't log out. It is not part of his workflow and therefor he can not imagine anybody ever logging out of something as perfect as Discourse.
Filed Under: I may or may not have exaggerated slightly
