I can download my posts now?
-
I thought it was in there already, although a quick Discosearch suggests I was wrong.
-
Hey, pjh, could you mark all my messages as read, or delete?
Already asked and answered over at meta:
https://meta.discourse.org/t/solved-request-mark-all-flags-as-read/21781/2?u=pjh
For some reason it's only available on the 'View Older Notifications' screen:

If you say "now" in the title. Does that mean that we had an update that introduced a new feature? Over the holidays? During the update-freeze?
ISTR seeing a post by Sam that he did an update after the freeze ...
-
Didn't we have that button before 1.0, but with placeholder text and no functionality?
Yeah, IIRC, the button's been there a while.
IIRC the button's been there a while, maybe it's just now that someone's realised it actually works now.
It was there, but then they hid it when we complained that it didn't do anything. Jeff actually agreed that it was stupid to show a placeholder to users.

I know. It was probably the only time that will ever happen. We should treasure that memory.
-
IIRC it's happened a couple of other times, but i don't think the other times were actioned on (yet)

In that case, he was only trying to appease us. They only count if acted upon.

Beat me to it.

i wonder who was #1?

Also, I wonder how badly we can spam the server by generating those exports.

Read upthread.

Read upthread.
Serves me well for trying to catch up with 200 unread topics...
Anyway, that was just 1k. What I actually do wonder about is whether it would be possible to fill up the disk quota with those exports...

We do that with regular forum activity, nevermind that.

don't break our forums.... please. try it on try.discourse.org instead.

I love this group. Every time we are given a new feature, our first thoughts are always: "How can we use this to break shit?"
try it on try.discourse.org instead.
All of our posts over there get deleted, so the export would be really small.
-
then meta.d if you're gonna be a burner....
or spam the hell out of try before you export.
not that i recommend it mind you but if you must watch thje world burn.... don't choose this one

The mark of a good tester.
I sat down with a friend a couple nights ago to give him a go at the current state of my MUD. He found approximately eleventy-billion ways to crash the server, all within 15 minutes. What I thought was funny was how apologetic he was about it.
"Oh sorry, maybe I shouldn't have typed that?"
"No you idiot, if you can crash the server with a 'whisper' command I need to know how so I can make sure that doesn't crash it anymore!"
(Okay, I didn't actually call him an idiot, but I did tell him finding new ways to crash it was a good thing.)
-
"No you idiot, if you can crash the server with a 'whisper' command I need to know how so I can make sure that doesn't crash it anymore!"
So what was the root cause?
-

Actually it tends to be some weirdity with leaving old unexpanded (multiple!) backups lying around, along with artifacts left behind after updating...
At least judging from the comments that Sam (and others) have made in the past...
-
So what was the root cause?
Stupid stuff. Mis-typed property names, a couple malformed regexes, etc. Mostly stuff that would be caught if Node.js had an actual compiler and real classes.
-
eslint helps.... but yeah, that is a downside to nodejs.
-
At least it's simple enough to identify and fix. My project (in C++ land) requires that I keep my eyes open for insidious things like format string attacks. If there is a vulnerability, a malformed chat message could do some damage.
-
The #1 cause is the COW snapshots caused by a container rebuild (which can only be done with console access).
Removing them isn't automatic because it could be destructive to people who run other stuff on the same machine. (IOW: hasn't been done yet)
-
COW snapshot
??
Also - triggered a post export the other day which didn't turn up. Have now triggered another to see if it works.
-
-
Nope. Nothing. Is this now broken?
dunno. just triggered again.
we'll see what happens. maybe @matches broke something....
-
which can only be done with console access
So not something that happens with a great deal of regularity on here then, since I don't have that, so that can't have been our problem.
-
Innocent. There is at least one person who downloaded stuff after me. I didn't touch it last.
-
true, but you did use fiddler to make a boatload of requests, no?
-
Successfully, looking at the screenshot.
-
Can you check
/logs
for "Job exception" lines? Or maybe/sidekiq
. Worried about how people aren't getting any exports.
-
Was nothing appearing in /logs when I tried earlier.
Nothing appearing in /sidekiq/retries or /sidekiq/scheduled.
Failed count appears to increment on each failed try, but I've no idea where to get information about those - think I've clicked every link and the failed count itself isn't clickable.

Just asked about that, couldn't find anywhere that stuff gets put. Still don't know.

So are we assigning credit to me or discosauce?
Have you tried deleting exports 10 through 950?
-
Have you tried deleting exports 10 through 950?
i think it's supposed to do that automatically.... that being the warning about only having two days to get the download...
-
Sure, and I'd believe it if it was working.
-
It did work following the restart yesterday or is it broken again?
-
i read that as he thinks the deletion is broken.
still.... time for experiment!
-
Specifically it no longer allows you to download the file, but the export doesn't appear to 404, it acts like you don't have permissions to download (ie, use someone else's export id url) so does it actually delete the export? Shrug. I guess that depends if the permissions and code are correct.
