So how do direct shift gearboxes fit into this?
They are, as has been mentioned, the best kind of automatic. However the engineers that build the things go to great effort to make them feel like a torque converter automatic.
For example they request an Astra automatic but get an Insignia automatic for the same money because that's all that's available.
Upgrade your car hire with this one weird trick! Car hire companies hate it!
Over here nearly every hire car in every class is automatic.
-
I could point at the driving record of the Google cars if you like.
They'll need some awesome detection of potholes before being useable in Brazil, but this doesn't belong on this thread anyway.

I use to cycle that in about five minutes. If your work has showers and you don't need to pick up shit that can't fit in a backpack invest in a bike. You can make different choices.
I did--I chose to live ~1.25 miles from where I work so that my average commute, if I don't stop for something on the way, is 7 minutes.
*edit : I use to actually walk it but I got lazy.
-
To me "traffic jam" means everyone's stopped, probably because of an accident.
If the traffic you're in is heavy enough, the difference is pretty much moot. You can't see what the idiots in front of you are doing and you can't get out of it and it sucks.
I've just never lived in a place where it would make sense to have one.
Using a manual gearbox is fun when you're in light traffic on interesting roads, e.g., lots of curves, hill country. Getting the shift exactly right for powering out of a bend so as to get the most efficient run at a hill is tremendously satisfying.

Some people would think you're just depriving them of your manly musk.s. If your work has showers
It doesn't, which is why I don't bike in.

So cars are ancient technology and the internet is brand new? Your logical fallacies suck, dude.

I have no idea what you're replying to. I mean I can click on the arrow and see my post, but I don't see anything in there that's relevant to your reply.

I've also started eating Quinoa for breakfast. It's high in both protien and fiber. I like to eat it with fruits and a side of eggs (along with coffee to drink). Ever since I've started eating healthier breakfasts and lunches I've felt a lot better physically as well as mentally. I would totally recommend it.

Showers aren't needed at all for such a short ride.
100-110° in the summer, dude. Oh yes they are.

I'm glad you've made some good decisions and improved your life.

Eww, yuck. How do people live in such hell-holes?
-
How do people live in such hell-holes?
It's a dry heat.
Actually if you stay hydrated it's not really that bad. But it's still hot enough you're not going to feel fresh after even a 10-15-minute bike ride, so if your office building doesn't have a shower, well, I've already said.
Me, I hate cold, which is how I stand it here.

-

Oh, I figured it was hotter where you lived. It looks like your truck melted a little bit.
-
Oh, I figured it was hotter where you lived.
100-110°
That's above the boiling point of water. It gets hot here sometimes, but not quite that hot.
-
That's above the boiling point of water.
Why would I use your screwball temperature scale?

Why would I use your screwball temperature scale?
Because the temperatures slightly above the boiling point of oxygen are probably not what you meant.

Yeah, I wasn't using that one, either.
-
Yeah, I wasn't using that one, either.
Then you've lost me. Perhaps some archaic scale based on the melting point of wax or something?
-
That's above the boiling point of water
Oh. You must live really damn high then. Do you have to carry a bottle of oxygen everywhere you go?
-
-
Do you?
It's not in a bottle, but my blood typically services this purpose with about 31% efficiency.

Now I really picture Boomzilla standing on his front porch with an oxygen tank and a walker screaming at kids to get off his lawn

Sometimes I wonder if it were possible to do that for myself. But then my body would force more sleep, and that makes trouble!

In an Illuminati plot twist, unless I set my alarm to an earlier time I always wake up at 7:23.

7:23 is the time my alarm clock is set to, believe it or not.

The hot water thing is broken so I have to boil the kettle for the second day in a row!

This calls for an experiment. On saturday, would you mind setting the alarm to 8:42 instead?

I have an alarm set to 8:41, although it's not enabled.

Would't make a difference.
03:40: Cat 1 wants to get out.
03:55: Cat 2 wants to get out.
05:11: Dog wants to get in. Cat 1 joins him.
05:45: Cat 1 wants to get out again. Cat 2 comes in.
06:30: Kid 1 is awake.
07:23: Well bugger if I can sleep anymore. Might as well take the dog for his morning walk.
07:53: Kid 2 is awake.
08:11: Wife is awake. Cat 1 comes back in again.

Ok I love my cat, but who cares when she wants to go out? Fuck her. Go back to bed.
Unless you don't keep a litterbox, in which case, why?

Unless you don't keep a litterbox, in which case, why is she inside in the first place?
post cannot be empty.
-
why is she inside in the first place?
Because cats are indoor pets. They shouldn't be allowed outside ever.
-
Here's why:
hello
hello
hello
are you awake?
Uuuh?
hello?
Uuh? Hi?
Oh, good. You're awake. I'd like you to let me out now, if you please.
Sure I'll just just get up...
hello Chief Opposable Thumb. I've eaten now. I notice the door is still closed.
whaa?
Hrmpf.
I'll just walk around over here for a while then.
Oooh. Look! Your precious B&W loudspeaker.
I'll just sharpen my claws for a while on this side of the loudspeaker
Oi! throws pillow at cat
Whaat?
Missed me!
Right. Do you see this wall? See the nice wallpaper. Need I remind you that I just sharpened my claws?
sigh
Much obliged.

Just lock them in the garage or something ... ours have a litter box, food, water and a soft warm place to sleep ... cat heaven!
-
Why would I want to lock them up? In the evenings they help the kids go to sleep. At night they hunt for mice (indoors as well as outdoors).
If they go out in the evening they are no longer my problem. Unless they ring the doorbell (a motion sensor over the yard that rings a bell indoors; it took the cats less than a week to figure that one out) or ask the dog to bark them in, but they rarely do this. Outdoors they have a whole forest to litter in, three barns to find comfy places to sleep and/or hunt in, and if they go over to the neighbour (300m) there's another barn with sheep in it that is warm, catless, and comfy.
When they were kittens we used to lock them into the bathroom when they started making noise at night. This only had the effect that they were more reluctant to come home in the evenings, and one of them learned how to open the door.
I'd rather get up an let them out than lie awake worrying about them. Yes, they are only cats, but we like them, and my kids would be devastated if anything happened to them.
-
Because cats are indoor pets. They shouldn't be allowed outside ever.
Look, we know you live in a place where an average spider can eat the cat whole and down it with a solid chunk of rock, but not everybody does..
-
Am I the only one with a cat flap?
-
That sounds uncomfortable. Why not just keep an extra set of keys around. Or at least a dog flap.
Reason for ¬cat flap: 6 months per year when the outdoor temperature is considerably lower than the indoor temperature, and the μ-value of a cat flap is much higher than a door or a wall.

Even outside Deathstralia, there's things like dogs, raccoons, coyotes, and so on.
