@BernieTheBernie then it'll be even easier to figure out

Then it will still be at 09:00 UTC.
Simple enough.

New proposal!
Instead of UTC, let's all use UTC.
While UTC stands for "Coordinated Universal Time," UTC instead stands for "Universal Constant Time."
Right from the start you can see it's better as, while we keep the same short name for backwards (???) compatibility, the new name at least has 1 letter that matches the meaning whereas the old one has none.
But the true greatness of UTC is what it really means. It is, as the name says, "constant." Meaning that it does not change. Ever. Anywhere. On Earth or anywhere else.
So it is always 9:00 UTC. Everywhere. All the time. Or 17:00 UTC if you want to have a drink, it's the same. Or anything, really. The number doesn't matter, just the fact that it never changes.
No more time conversions since the time is the same everywhere. No more complicated duration computations since the time is the same all the time so every duration is always 0.
That's it, problem solved!

Agreed, but at least define UTC as beer o'clock, instead of as 9:00 UTC.
-
@nerd4sale no problem with that, the beauty of UTC being that it can be any value.
#define BEER_O_CLOCK "9:00"
-
@remi My vote is for UTC 7:00, since I get up at 8

Now whenever you wake you always wake up early.
And the bosses will like it too. They'll make you sign a contract that locks you on 10am UTC, so you can't go home without breaking the contract.

@BernieTheBernie I'm pretty sure we developed it before you did. The Czech term is "pičo kurva co to je?!"

That's a more generic term though. In fact it's fairly appropriate translation of “what the fuck‽”.

@blek What kind of railway security is that? No railway crossing gate there? Not even a traffic light?
-
@BernieTheBernie Plenty of those in West Chukotka, too
Works just fine (save for one or a few "hoodies" with earmuffs, but no great loss to society overall).
-
@BernieTheBernie You've never been to Brno, have you?
-
@BernieTheBernie said in Driving Anti-Patterns - Necro Edition:

It is not a crossing, it is a station with absolutely crappily designed platforms that are just marked on the ground rather than elevated like any decent station should have. And the guy was running from the second platform, where the train normally stops, to the first platform, where it was announced to arrive instead at the last minute.

Huh. I have been to Brno, but didn't see anything like that. Maybe I was just in a different part of the city...
-
@dkf Because neither is a regular service, but rather they were special events, as part of the international industrial fair.

Still no flying cars, though.

The person who made the video also risks being fine for stopping their vehicle in the middle of the road for no good reason.
Watching this happening IS a good reason

Well, I hope so for their sake.

Oh, the joys of going off on vacation and driving in this wonderful tourist season.
- Driving 80 km/h, gets overtaken, then the one who overtook me starts driving in 70 km/h. Speed limit of road unchanged at 80 km/h.
- Having to panic brake because some moron ignores a stop sign and just drives out into the road.
- Someone who arrived at the port just before they opened check-in and leaving their car in front of the gate, blocking one queue until they happened to wander back.
- All cars piling up in one queue instead of spreading out across the three queues.
- People starting their cars way before it is their turn to drive onto and off the ferry.
Herp-a-derp.

Ain't it swell?
It's worse around Stockholm as well.

Isn't the queue that matters the one that is controlled by the port staff? Typically, on larger ferries, bigger vehicles are in their own queue(s) and actual trucks are different again. The pre-checkin queue is of secondary importance.

Depending on the ferry, there are usually several queues for cars

On the smallest ferries I've been on, the only reason there was a queue was because I was in a group with more people that would comfortably fit in a single car.

Yeah, but after a while you stop noticing how bad it is and start becoming part of the problem. I think there might even be a name for that sort of behavior, but I can't quite remember what it is.

Some road design anti-patterns:
-
-
One hand on the wheel, one hand on the clutch, eyes firmly on the underside of the dashboard.
-
@boomzilla Your foot is underneath your hands.
-
status just drove my mother home.
what do you think of the new steering wheel grip?
its very spiffy. Feels kind of odd.what the hell is with the grip? Its not gripping at all. Its slipping all over the wheel.
Oh, its inside out. It looks nicer this way.
-
@Bulb Haha, that reminds me of this work of art

So if you're going east and you start in the right lane, you have to merge left and then immediately merge back right while crossing a bike lane.
Thankfully, in that direction the road goes up a pretty steep hill, and it's an industrial area at the edge of the city, the only place nearby anyone might want to bike to is a Vietnamese marketplace (think Sapa) behind the orange gate to the north. So while I used to live nearby I don't think I've ever seen a cyclist use it.
-
@blek Yeah, there's plenty of similar works of art all over Czechia. I think it's a typical effect of budget system. Politicians want to boast how many kilometres of bike lanes they created, budget is allocated to drawing bike lanes, so bike lanes get drawn. Not always with good understanding whether they make sense in a particular place or whether they actually improve safety there or not.
-
@blek Just looking at the lane geometry (and ignoring the bicycle bits) I'm guessing this is an 80 km/h road minimum. Painted bicycle gutters are dubious on 50 km/h roads, and should not be used above that.
-
@PleegWat No, the road is within city limits and there is a junction with traffic lights just right of the posted image (the lane turning right is part of that junction and has traffic lights on it as well). I see no speed limit sign on street view for eastbound, so 50 km/h, and westbound it seems to be raised to just 60 km/h, and just for a bit, since the next traffic lights to the west are not that far either.
