@dkf I know in Dutch traffic law there are a bunch of situations where you are not allowed to stop, not even in the flow of traffic. This means in case of a traffic jam you need to keep them clear. Railway crossings and the centres of intersections are among these.

Railway crossings
In that case, I'd be more worried about the laws of physics than the laws of traffic.

@sloosecannon said in Driving Anti-Patterns - Necro Edition:
@sloosecannon Oh I suppose I should add "the middle of a runway" on there too. But if you're there, something has probably gone horribly wrong

Yeah, blocking an intersection or a railroad crossing are both infractions in the USA too.

To be fair we don't know how the donkey reacts to firetrucks.

In the village where I grew up, we had an old alcoholic farmer that uses to take his horse and cart to the mill to get his grain magicked into flour. He spent the time waiting for the flour drinking moonshine until he basically passed out. The horse knew the way home and took him there while he slept on the bags in the back of the cart.

Speaking of. YouTube proves itself precocious and recommended me this video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2rtlA-yy_w
Video is about some dude that goes off on a cop for taking him in due to a warrant, but it is almost completely likely they would never have run his tags and stopped him if he didn't stop in the middle of the road (purportedly to let his son out) long enough for the cop to get suspicious.

No, not necessarily. I crossed that runway on bicycle, legally:

A perfectly autonomous vehicle. It even knows where the owner wants to get to without him pronouncing it.

@boomzilla That is one of those things that happens so rarely that it doesn't constitute a pattern, anti- or otherwise. Or at least one hopes it is that rare.

I'm afraid it might have been an elderly driver who mistook the accelerator pedal for the brake pedal and floored it.
It's not unheard of, and it can have dire consequences:

@JBert old people like that should just lose their license if they can’t drive for shit. We don’t let kids drive a car, but if you say old people can’t drive you’re being age discriminatory or something.
3 weeks ago some grandma nearly ran me over on my bike. Nothing happened because it was a 30kph zone so she was slow and I just jumped to the side walk, but still.
The situation was a narrow street where barely two cars would fit next to each other and there were cars parked every so often on the left lane. Since my lane was free and the obstruction was on the other side, I clearly had right of way, but instead of stopping between the parked cars she just kept driving on my lane like I didn’t even exist. Probably didn’t even see my. Certainly didn’t react to me dodging and shouting.

Here in Hamburg, one particular street is infamous for those kinds of accidents because for some reason, they happen there on a regular basis. They even installed hefty steel bars to prevent people from crashing into shops but it still happens.

Well, I'd probably chalk that up to general idiocy where being in a car makes you have right of way in general. Some people simply should not be allowed to drive, independent of age.
For instance, I was in my car, driving down just such a street but on the side without the right of way. When I saw an incoming car I yielded by slightly turning right into a free parking slot - thus the incoming car could now just pass me.
Well, that was the plan.
What happened instead was that the woman behind me was incapable of thinking 2 meters ahead and simply overtook me. Well, tried to overtake me, that is, because now she blocked the street entirely. And then she sat there and waited for the other car to magically vanish or something.
Took a while to get that cleared up.
Considering that I saw her taking a parking spot 400 meters down the street I'm also not quite sure why she was in such a hurry. Her maneuver certainly did not speed up things.

At least round here, they have to be reassessed regularly for whether they're fit to drive. Of particular importance is whether they can see what other road users are up to, but general mental competence would also be a factor.

@Zecc Why in the world does the truck driver not stop immediately? It definitely looks as if he's driving away.
Then again, he's dumb enough to have an accident at this bridge so I may just have answered my question.
-
@Rhywden At this point they need like RR grade crossing style gates to block the damn road...
..... And someone would still run them and get stuck

Oh, they can't actually get stuck on the bridge anymore. That orange beam is lower than the bridge. So, anything that makes it under the beam will also clear the bridge.
As demonstrated.
And the beam's easy to detach, so the effect on traffic is minimized.

Maybe he’s a white label driver for Amazon, and if his average daily miles is in the bottom 20% he gets fired.

I like how relaxed the officer's voice sounds. Definitely a car chase.

Amber is normal....... If you can safely clear the intersection before it goes red.
Red though, that's just plain illegal.

I find these American-style traffic lights confusing. In Europe they are always above or next to the entry line, so then passing the light itself after it turned red is the obvious infraction. I suppose here it is still the entry line that is illegal to cross on red, so while the truck that got peeled passed under the bridge on red light, it clearly entered it when it was still amber, so it shouldn't be a problem.
