I've read incident frequencies to the tune of 100 closures per month for some tunnels.
Do you ever get the same guy doing multiple crashes?
-
@dkf I hardly keep track. I seem to recall it's a €500 fine, which isn't that steep considering the damage, but trapped motorists may be able to claim their economical damage as well which would add up quickly.

@Carnage Not sure that this counts as an explosion, though. Looks to me like the pressure container ruptured and then the gas "merely" caught fire - I mean, the fireball was impressive but an explosion should have definitely caused more damage.
Yeah, you can see a gas cloud forming and then ignite for som special effectsy conflagration.

We've raced with Paul, he's a nice chap.
I'm actually driving to Santa Pod later tonight, I'm going to be crewing on a special, record-breaking, jet thing soon. It's a bit of surprise and I'm 50% ecstatic...and the other 50% is poop.

Speaking of jet stuff, how about a jet powered kick sled?

Doing drag races on ice with strange things is a recurring thing here in Sweden.Or a home brew gas turbine jet bike from the same chap?

He ran the bike at salt lake a couple of years ago, and aim to beat records with it. He's building a new engine to go faster with it currently.

Just had a mental image of Ru Paul requiring that “Lipsynch For Your Life” be performed in heels on a skating rink.
I’d pay to watch that.

EDIT: If you watch the YouTube video included in the article you can see how he can place his feet on the polyester shell when driving, but then needs to stick out his leg a whole lot more to keep his balance when stopping at traffic lights...

If anyone doesn't know what lane-splitting is, it's when motorcycles share a lane with a car. Very dangerous, even in states where it's legal.
This morning, some riced-out Subaru sports car was evidently very upset that I was only going 8 mph above the speed limit in the rightmost lane. After tailgating me for a mile (this makes me very nervous because bike + rider only weighs about 500 pounds in my case...), he split lanes to pass me. While I was riding down the very center of the lane. He nearly clipped me and the car just to the left of me. I wish I'd had a Go Pro because the state patrol would've received a call and some video evidence for reckless driving.

Actual research on the topic of lane splitting motorcycles have found that it is about as safe as not lane splitting as long as the speed difference is moderate. Last time I read about it, the law in some countries even require motorcycles to not stop in line with cars in traffic jams.

Seems like most of the motorcyclist I see on US101 have those now. Tho in many cases, it would prove they were driving like assholes... I don't mind the splitters too much - when the lanes are sufficiently wide (hint: in construction areas, they're not!) and the speed differential is low (I've had some pass on 20+mph difference - scares the shit out of me).

I have a hard time believing it's ever safe. So many drivers are jacking around with their phones too much to stay within their own lane. Like hell do I want them in my lane. I don't even want them in the lane next to me.
EDIT: There's a reason my motorcycle is a street-legal dirt bike. I can safely hit a median or curb or soft ditch at 50 MPH to get out of the way of idiots who are about to run me over, and I'm not going to wreck or lose control. And yes I've had to do that multiple times during my motorcycle career.

The problem is, phone drivers will also run you over if you are in your lane, so it is kind of irrelevant with regards to filtering (or lane splitting).

Dude, it's legal (actually, now explicitly so) in fuckin' California, where everything is known to cause cancer. I know, legal !== safe. Still, as long as it's done safely, it should be perfectly legal - and if it isn't done safely, then... well, reckless driving charges would be in order, as in your case. And I say this as a fellow motorcyclist.

I saw lane splitting the last time I was in California. The difference was that traffic was so bad nobody moved above 5 MPH and I also didn't see very many people playing with their phones. Here, everyone goes 60 in a 45 zone and I'm literally the only single person not watching Netflix on my phone while I make my way to work.
-
@mott555 Fair enough. But there are already laws against distracted and reckless driving. Throw the book at them instead.

I wish that would happen. But our cops don't do much enforcement on traffic laws. You could drive 100 MPH down the main road with bodies dragging on a rope behind your bumper and nothing would happen.
-
I just remembered a funny near-accident I witnessed the other day. I was third in line at a red light. The drivers of both cars in front of me were playing with their phones. The light turned green. First driver was playing with his phone and didn't notice the light change, so he didn't move. The second driver was playing with his phone, but he did notice the light change. What he didn't notice was the car in front of him, and he nearly rear-ended the first car. That would have made my day.

Can get a €240 fine (plus €9 administration fees) per transgression. And they're working on cameras which can spot you doing it.

Especially when the exhaust system is designed to be as loud as possible ("loud pipes save lives"), but projects the sound (almost) entirely rearward. You don't hear them at all as they approach you, then suddenly, as they appear from nowhere, 120dB right next to you. That's very startling no matter how fast they're going.
-
@PleegWat In Quebec it's $300 to $600 for the first offence, repeat offender (within a 2 year period) is $600
Repeat offender also get license suspended for 3 days, second repeat is 7 days and third one is 30 days
Edit: Even when you are stopped at a red light or stuck in traffic, you are considered driving!

Correct. Unless you're parked with the engine off: driving.

Last year I was driving in California on a freeway. I can't recall if traffic was stopped or going slow or if we were booking down the road, but I was in the left lane and apparently I hadn't pre-emptively split well enough for some guy who slowed down to go between me and the guy on my right and then turned around and flipped me off. I was driving a Toyota Tundra at the time so I was already taking up more of the lane than most cars.
Which I returned. Pretty ridiculous. It's guys like that who end up being categorized with the dehumanized bicycle riders. I do my best to keep distance and stuff with sane motorcyclists but lane splitters can eat a box of dicks for trying to drive in the same lane as me. I mean...it's not a major problem when everyone is stopped or going 5mph, but when you're doing 50+, I can tell you that I care as much about your life as you appear to when you lane split. I'm more concerned about getting a dent than the loss of human life at that point.

Even then. IIRC I've heard that even if you're in the back with the engine turned off, it's still considered driving. So if you have a few drinks at a bar, it's safer to immediately get behind the wheel and drive than to take a nap in the back and sober up a bit before driving.
-
@hungrier You have a weird definition of "safe".
You're obviously putting "safety of license" higher than "safety of bodily health".
-
@Rhywden It's the ironic legal version of "safe", not anything relevant to actual safety.

There's one little problem with that argument which will let it fly in court for about as far as a duck out of lead: If you haven't got the keys how did you get into your car in the first place?

Ah: https://www.pressdemocrat.com/news/5944932-181/motorcycle-lane-splitting-in-california
It originally set a 50-mph speed limit on how fast a motorcycle can go while lane splitting and prohibited riders from traveling more than 15 mph faster than traffic.

Sadly I'm pretty sure that doesn't do anything. In most jurisdictions of which I'm aware, if it's a traffic offense or misdemeanor, the cops have to be the ones to witness it.
