Unfortunately, your problem is roughly:
"I have chosen my backup solution. It is not suitable for all my data, because it's too inefficient."
Whenever JWZ asks the lazyweb for help, hilarity ensues, because for raisins nobody can ever come up with an answer he finds acceptable. Generally, he rants at the people in amusingish ways, though.
And he keeps doing it every few months. It's like a case study in "doesn't learn".

This is a little inside baseball, but these two naturally-spawned iron golems just attacked each other until one died.

You can't really tell, but he's actually in the air. I heard the fighting sound and ran over to see what was going on. I have no idea why they attacked each other, but they were basically hitting each other at the same time and throwing each other up in the air. One of them--I don't know which--had just killed a hobgoblin for some reason. I wasn't sure why, as I don't believe it had attacked a villager--normally they only do that if they outnumber them, and this was a big village.

At a guess they were both attacking the ?zombie? and - as happens not infrequently when more than one mob tries to attack the same target - they got in each other's way, one of them accidentally hit the other, and the aggro system kicked in
Or possibly one of them accidentally hit a villager that had got involved in the fight and the other leapt in to defend its charges from the rogue.

No, it was a hobgoblin. Witchery mod.

Could be. The one that wasn't killing the hobgoblin was 20 blocks away just a half-minute before, so I have no idea how it happened. I would have loved to have seen it though.
Or possibly one of them accidentally hit a villager that had got involved in the fight and the other leapt in to defend its charges from the rogue.
That's seems most likely--hobgoblins will attack villagers. But normally, only when, as I said, they outnumber them, and that was not the case here.

Huh. What do they do?

Lately I've been playing modded. Tinker's Construct+Iguana's tinker tweaks, while slowing the early tool progression down a bit, adds a lot, although it sometimes goes awry--last night, my shovel skill levelled and now autosmelts. While this means glass is much easier to get, it's annoying if you actually wanted the sand.I actually haven't used the witchery mod really at all yet; I'm still exploring the Thermal Expansion set of mods, which do some nice stuff for automation. I'm building a set of mini-farms that work like this: one machine breeds animals, a second pulls the babies into a second area, where they grow up; a third pulls the adults into a third area, where they are harvested of eggs, and then killed for food and feathers. All the machinery is mostly automatic; you just have to add coal to a steam turbine every once in a while to feed power to everything else.
Oh, and crossbows, capable of two-shotting most overworld mobs without them even aggroing on you.

My bow in vanilla two-shots everything other than an enderman (is it even possible to shoot an enderman? I've never got a single hit on one. I hate endermen.) from non-aggro distance, except when it occasionally one-shots. And infinite ammo too.

But you have to charge it, right? (Now, crossbows have a recharge time, not a charge time, but I guess you could argue the effect's the same.)
is it even possible to shoot an enderman?
No. (The wiki says on console versions, you can arc a shot onto them if you don't put the crosshairs on 'em.)
Also, crossbow ammo is "repaired", so you don't have to maintain chicken farms. But really, IMO, upgradable tools that are infinitely repairable and aren't destroyed when they break is more than enough reason to use that mod.
Crossbow ammo's made by smelting a tool rod, pouring molten metal over it, and combining the resulting crossbow shaft with a fletching. IIRC the metal used controls the stack size of the resulting bolts. When the stack count is 0, you combine it with an ingot of the same metal to "repair" the stack. I like it a LOT better, mainly because chicken farming is kind of annoying.

But you have to charge it, right? (Now, crossbows have a recharge time, not a charge time, but I guess you could argue the effect's the same.)
Well, you can get off one shot with no charge. But unless you're using a bow on something already coming at you, or capable of one-shotting your enemy, the initial charge doesn't make much difference. Does it have to recharge before you can switch to melee, though?
Also, crossbow ammo is "repaired", so you don't have to maintain chicken farms.
Infinite ammo. I need one arrow in my inventory. I usually have more, indeed I've collected stacks and stacks to stock the communal ammo chests on top of the city towers, just from the normal nightly skeleton spawnings. I don't remember when I last crafted an arrow, I have no use for with all the feathers I collect from farming chickens for meat and eggs (I'm kind of a bit obsessive about collecting resources...)
Sounds cool though. I have this irrational aversion to modding games, but if I didn't I'd check it out.
Filed under: irrational means I know it doesn't make sense, and sensible arguments won't make any difference
-
Does it have to recharge before you can switch to melee, though?
Nope. After you fire, it spends a couple of seconds reloading. I believe you can adjust the time with materials.
My crossbow, made of alumite and I forget what else--it doesn't really use any advanced materials, claims to do max 13.2 points damage. the iron bolts say "+3 attack damage". It seems to do about 5.5 hearts on a regular hit. I do mean to try more advanced materials for the bow and bolts. One nice thing is once I get my hands on some cobalt or something I can make a stronger alloy and simply replace the bow arms, instead of making a new device.

That happened to me in t/1000 just now…

wait' i'm not the only one that's seeing all those urls as https://youtube.com/devicesupport?!
good to know....
who do we report that to?
If you see this video in your YouTube app’s video feeds, your device is affected. (Note: If the video appears unexpectedly in a web browser, it means that website is using an outdated method to access YouTube videos.)
As we upgrade the YouTube Data API to bring more features, we’ll begin shutting down the old version on April 20, 2015. This will result in the current YouTube app not working on certain device models from 2012 and older.
.... wat?

On Discourse? The hell you say....
They want to be the discussion platform for the next 20 years, they have parts of it being deprecated already.

A reason for its use is that English has no dedicated singular personal pronoun of indeterminate gender.
Erm… yes it does:
it
. It's just people don't like being calledit
.
-
I wouldn't call "doesn't have a gender" indeterminate.
It
is for things, we could have used it for stuff with indeterminate gender (would make more sense) but languages aren't designed so we get wonkiness like we have.
-
I saw it before you deleted it, you scoundrel.
It did, in fact, seem rather whooshy. I flagged.

The badge description doesn't say "didn't get the joke, but then did and edited the evidence away", just "didn't get the joke".
I flags 'em like I sees 'em.

French is designed by committee ...
But isn't there a mismatch between the committee declarations vs. actual usage? I remember we had a surrender monkey around here at one point maybe they could clear that up.
-
And so we see that deleting evidence of a whoosh does not prevent a badge from being granted.

Evil. But in a creative way!

And somewhat funny!

Oh I fullscreened the video and then ended up further up the thread. Fuck sake, Dischorse.

Ah, infinity on your bow?
Infinity, unbreaking III, and power V. It's a nice bow.
I have a very nice sword too, and I'm working on a nice set of armour.

Sounds like. My crossbow hasn't levelled or had any enhancements applied to it yet, but it's still pretty powerful.
ETA: The stock enchantment system annoys me.
