@dkf Is it irony if a god says "God dammit!"?

@RaceProUK only if it's raining and they're getting married

so not when you have a spoon but need a knife?
-
@Luhmann one spoon isn't ironic. A few hundred is slightly ironic. 10,000 is ironic. Any more is just silly

counting your spoons in decimals does seem silly indeed ...
-
@Luhmann Gotta make sure the spoons are exactly precise enough for the irony factor to work. Can't be doing with European fractions of spoons, now.

Yes it is, unless it is made of silver or wood.
-
Is knifey-spoony ironic?
-
...when you feel the urge to end a bugreport in a public issue tracker with a "Clowns!!!".

... you instinctively groan at @blubar after seeing this...

@raceprouk Dende usually replaces 'god' with 'me'.

This happened a few days ago, but I just remembered.
I was out for my usual morning walk when I saw a delivery van go by. The name on the side was "DF Catering." My first thought was "DO NOT WANT--who knows what those dwarves are delivering" and my second was "Wait, @ben_lubar doesn't live in Florida..."
-
@benjamin-hall just because Ben might not live in Florida doesn't mean other people aren't shipping dwarf related items.
Besides if you're going to build a fortress in 2017, you want to get all the supplies together rather than all that tedious dwarf resource gathering nonsense.

@arantor He'll be OK. Florida doesn't have lava near the surface.

MS are currently reworking a lot of their MSDN docs and moving them to a new site, so it won't be long before
once, just once, i'd love to have a web link on a microsoft platform to have a half life of more than 3 hours.
that would be great.
It would also be nice if their KB articles, links to updates, etc. actually ever worked. I always have to search again and again for the pages, because the URL for that page is always redirected to the generic URL for the homepage.
Or is that what you're talking about?

i'm starting to become afraid of ever refreshing my browser for fear of losing the content i was previously looking at and being unable to find it until google crawls the site again.

Disabled nodebb-plugin-youtube-embed.
I assumed "SyntaxError: Unexpected token < in JSON at position 0" was an embed error, rather than the actual target page's title and content.

@masonwheeler I find myself using "Toby Faire" (or various spellings of the second half) more and more lately.

When you see a post in the WTF Bites thread and think you should cross post it to the WTF Bites thread so the people over at WTDWTF can enjoy it too.
I've also started using the trolleybus in other places...

I am TRWTF.

I spent way too long trying to figure out that acronym. I got about 3/4's of it figured out but couldn't finish. Then this thread popped to the top and now everything makes sense again.

No one would explain it to me for forever. They made me look at an archive.
I caught that one back on CS. I think I only made like 2 posts, I was mostly just using the account so it earmarks where I left off. I'm pretty sure that came from one of the 2 original swampy threads so I was able to witness it's evolution from the full phrase to the initialism, albeit with a few months of lag (I know the threads were already inactive when I started reading them, but were still not that old at the time).

Derp!
Wait, did someone fix the thread title for me, or is that automatic? Because, full disclosure, I did forget.

It's worse than that. That looks like Chrome which means he chose Bing.
-
@loopback0 @HardwareGeek Pause and think why somebody would choose to put Bing as the default search engine on chrome. Something WTFy is behind me doing that.
Clue: A lot of people in the neighborhood had to switch to Bing too.

I use Bing, in Chrome, and have no regrets.
(I try my searches there first for the Microsoft Rewards. Getting a $5 Amazon gift card every month or three is nice. If that fails, I can always manually go to Google.)

Whaaaat? I've never heard of this before.
-
@unperverted-vixen Bing, the search engine so good that Microsoft has to bribe you to use it?
-
@stillwater Quick research shows that it's probably US-only now. It was available elsewhere but shuttered a while ago.
@Scarlet_Manuka It may not be the best, but it's good enough that I'm willing to accept a bribe.
-
@unperverted-vixen I'm not trying to fault you for accepting free money. I'm just commenting on what it says about the quality of their product and their own perception of their ability to compete in the marketplace.
Yes, it's difficult to persuade people to change from the familiar, but if they had a genuinely better product, it would happen; that's exactly how Google got to its position in the first place, and they didn't have to offer people money to get them to switch away from AltaVista or Yahoo! search.
-

Nope. Network effect. All that data that they collect on you and sell to the highest bidder? They're also using that to make their search engine smarter. A new engine, in order to even try to compete with them, needs mountains of test data. Meanwhile, Google's a verb by now. It's not just a search engine, it's the search engine. Same way you say 'popsicle' instead of 'ice pop', or 'AR-15' instead of 'semiautomatic rifle with pistol grip'.

Weren't bing caught literally using Google behind the scenes a while ago?
