Is it likely for a computer with a possibly-wonky PSU to short an external monitor via HDMI?
Similar situation, apparently my chinasseum DVR had mains voltage on the VGA port, which eventually killed the monitor it was attached to.

Back in the DOS days, it was a toss-up between {ctrl,alt}+{q,x}

Or Ctrl-Alt-Del

@Zerosquare I've run into that one as well. Using a TSR helper, because the program in question had not bothered to implement return-to-dos at all.

Status: I just found the installation disk for a game I haven't played in a very long time. (It was somehow broken on my old computer; it wouldn't load any save files, old or new. And trying to install it on my new(er) computer from the online store failed.) Installing it now. Will it load save files?
-
@HardwareGeek Is there a Betteridge's Law of Software?
-
@Applied-Mediocrity Well, the vanilla game will load a brand-new, 100% vanilla save, which the old installation wouldn't do. So that's a good first step.
Next step: Install extra content, because my old saves definitely won't load without those.
-
@HardwareGeek All (?) official content loaded. Some of which I don't have on physical media, so I installed it from Origin (which has now been replaced by "EA App"). EA App duly indicated which content I owned. However, it would only let me "manage" the content I'd already installed. The only way I could find to install the content I owned but hadn't installed was to "repair" the game, which downloaded and installed many GB that I had just installed from physical media.
After all that, at least it still loads a (new, that doesn't use any of that extra content) save file.
Now copying many GB of user-created content from my old computer. Will it still load save files with all of that installed?
-
@HardwareGeek BIG FIERY BALL VISIBLE FROM SPACE! BIG FIERY BALL VISIBLE FROM SPACE! BIG FIERY BALL VISIBLE FROM SPAAAAAAACE!!

@TwelveBaud Maybe?
Progress. User-generated content (including mods) copied and enabled. (I had disabled while trying to debug why saves wouldn't load.) Loads both new and old saves. However, copying the saves didn't preserve the timestamps, so the load menu is presenting them in a nonsensical order, making it hard to find the saves I care about (generally, the most recent in each story line), so I'm 7-zipping them and copying again.

Well... I can load most of my old saves (I guess; I haven't tried all of them.) However, I can't load the ones I think of as my "main" story line, because the game just won't tell me they exist.
The last time I played the game was January, 2020 (except for a one-off new game in October, which was probably just a debugging attempt). There are 3 saves from a new story line in late January, and a bunch of saves from several play sessions in one story line spanning mid to late January. Before that, there are several saves from another story line in 2015 and 2018. (I have no idea why there is such a big jump in dates; I'm sure I must have played it during 2016 and 2017, but I don't have any saves from that period.
) But between 2018 and 2020, there are several saves from my "main" story line dated September and November 2019. The game's load menu doesn't show them.
-
@HardwareGeek Aha! I figured it out. If there are too many save files in the save folder, the game will simply ignore some of them. I knew this; it's why I have multiple OldSaves folders. So I moved some of the save files out of the way. Now I can load my "main" saves.
Why did it chose to ignore these particular saves instead of others?
All is not entirely well. Some of the user-created content is missing. But at least it's a big improvement over not being able to play the game at all for 3 years.
-
-
@Applied-Mediocrity But worse. Previously, you could start the game by clicking its .exe icon, bypassing the game launcher. (IIRC, this was necessary for one of the mods that does its thing during launch to work correctly.) Now, attempting to start the game directly from the .exe not only starts the launcher, it starts the EA app (if it's not already running) first, then the launcher. (However, if I remember which mod it was that needed that, it seems to work anyway.
)
Next step: Update mods. I know they've been updated since I played last (even the ones abandoned by the original modder). I'm surprised they still work at all. At least there only maybe 3 or 4 dozen of them to keep track of. Figuring out why some of the hundreds of user-created assets are missing is going to be

Unfortunately, I don't have my nice workbench for testing computer builds any more. Hopefully I can pull it out partway without disconnecting everything from the back, make sure everything's seated properly, and maybe swap SATA cables with one of the other drives for testing. :/

Another meeting this morning. 5min before the meeting the internet connection broke down. I had to use up mobile data.
Next meeting this afternoon: 5min before the meeting an electrician knocked at the door and announced that he's going to replace the meter, so there's going to be a power outage. *#$&(@$#
Now we're trying to give our client some choices
But he's not happy. He wants his new system to work like his old system, where he has jigabytes of data and must do a lot of manual diagnostics. He can't imagine how those diagnostics could be automated and only report errors. Every time we propose something, there are exceptions to the rule. 'Ok, but this is not always an error, because we have these 5 thing which work differently, because...'.
It reminds me of this story about James Watt, in which he sold his new (much more efficient) engine to a mine owner. Next day the purchaser wanted to return it because 'it's too quiet, I can't sleep, I constantly think it's broken and the mine is getting flooded'. Watt loosened some screws so that it would clunk loudly and made client was happy. But I don't know how to clunk error logs in a scalable way.

@topspin It's still technically winter until 20 March, you know.
-
@topspin The warmest day since ... let me try to find out ... 1 January? Could be true...

@HardwareGeek yeah, but it was super warm today and then falling off a steep cliff. Today’s low is tomorrow’s high, almost 20°C difference.

Yep. You're flipping from air coming from the south (Mediterranean/Africa) to air coming from the north (Arctic) by way of a good cold front. We've just had that too, but the temperature change wasn't as severe (our warm air was from the mid-Atlantic instead); it involved a good lot of heavy rain.

We have a clock which is 30 minutes off.
Whether that's ahead or behind depends on time of year.We don't reset it because every time we try to use its buttons
IT BEEPS VERY LOUDLY.

A couple immediate solutions are available to me, but of course most likely they are the shadows of the ghosts of illusions.
Tiering the logs, such that the pukebucket tier fill rate may be used to gauge work, but they are aggressively rotated, with a more sedate log of more meaningful events, is what the situation deserves.
Tagged metrics would be better, but no-one involved is worthy to use them.

We went the other way last Thu. From lows in the mid-30s to lows in the mid-50s. Not sure that the storm currently rolling through is supposed to do... Other than rain, floods, mudslides, you know, the typical California apocalypse.

TodayYesterday — it's after midnight — actually turned out to be surprisingly productive. It didn't start out that way, but by the end of the day, one of the coworkers who was helping me debug a failing test found and fixed two bugs revealed by the failure. After that, it was still failing. I worked on that with the other coworker; he identified where the problem was (timing issue, similar to something we'd looked at Friday), and after he quit for the day, I changed the timing enough for it to pass. I can't tell you if it's theoretically right, but it works.
