@Tsaukpaetra I've seen so many bugs from people forgetting to memset a new malloc and then leaving random garbage in a field or two which causes things to go haywire when used later on...
I've had some annoying bugs that didn't show up on development time because the debug build always set everything to zero, but the release build doesn't.

What the heck is that, anyway? Shouldn't it be "chunky boi"?

Status: was playing some civ 5 last night. Twice I sent some settlers out, and barbarians got close to them right when they reached the destination. So both times I founded a city right in front of them and was able to attack with that.
I'll have to use settlers as undercover military units more often.

Found it. Attached a head, but it wouldn't come up.
Reset it. Now it says "Undoing changes".
I'm not sure how far it got, but usually reinstallation is not something you can undo....

@Cursorkeys I actually attended a round of lectures talking about such phenomena - it’s called “self-organizing media” (though the context for “medium” is different from that in IT). Ripples in the sand, cloud formations, drying mud...
... I myself had to give a lecture on neuronal excitation in squid eyes. It’s quite interesting to see how stuff evolved to the point where this excitation cycle resets all on its own without outside intervention.
Though there were two points of my lecture where I prayed: “Please, please, please don’t ask any questions about this particular point!”
-
@Rhywden Searching for 'self-organising media ice hexagon' gave me a nice article aimed at the layman, thanks!

I find that kind of thing fascinating. Especially the operation of the human visual system, and how things like how the McCollough effect can 'break' the edge-detection mechanism.

Looked it up and stared at a demonstration image. Cool.
under certain circumstances, it can last up to three months or more.
Well it's persisted for a fair few minutes now. What have you done to me.

I had it last into the next day once after really doing the training and getting it pretty vivid. It disappeared after about a day and a half, to my relief. Usually it seems to be under an hour for me if I just train until it's noticeable on the test image and then stop.
Edit: Just read the 'tilting the head' bit on Wiki, it works! and is super weird, almost a log response.

UPS doesn't help much when the power goes out in the middle of the night, when I'm asleep, and the outage lasts >2.5 hours. However, Chrome seems to have restored all its many tabs without attempting to play 37 YT videos simultaneously, which is usually the major problem with rebooting, and it's only using about 5GB so far.

I was going to try to look at a house to rent today. I called Sunday and was told that I needed to call in the morning the same day I wanted to see it, in order to make sure it was still available at the time of the appointment, and it was too late to see it when I called Sunday. I finally got into work early enough today to fit a long lunch into my schedule, but when I went to call for an appointment, the Craigslist ad had been flagged for removal.
I wasn't terribly surprised, though; the listed rent was almost too good to be true.

I sat here staring at two patterns for five minutes, and I can almost see it now due to fatigue persistence.
'course, while the vertical pattern was being displayed I had to stop auto-focus from trying to decode a stereogram from it.

Status: I had the misfortune of using Photoshop today. I have literally never been so annoyed by a piece of software.
I guess you haven't used any other image manipulation software
That's the thing: I have, and it's fine, but Photoshop was horrendous. I would never have thought that such supposedly-professional software could be so awful.
Should I rant briefly in another Free™ thread? I don't actually have all that much to say, because it was only a quick task that took no more than an hour.
I like Photoshop for complex projects or ones that aren't RGB, but it's overkill for most things and (as I don't live in it like a full-time artist) I always have to adjust back to how it works. Nowadays I use Paint.net for most bitmap work; previously I used Paint Shop Pro 8.
-
@Parody said in The Official Status Thread:

I used to use Photoshop a lot, but my copy is something like 15 years old, so it doesn't exactly get much use any more. I use gimp for everything these days, and it's good enough for 99.9% of the stuff I need it for, and the other .1% I don't really need. There are a few Photoshop features it would be nice to have, like spot colors, but nothing that would consume those images supports them, so it'd be kind of pointless.

Shame, shame... I could however log into the planning tool mobile app just fine, but it's kinda shit for anything more advanced than looking at your schedule.

@Atazhaia Fuck. Managed to solve the problem. Apparently, my password had expired and needed to be changed. Even though the message indicated nothing of the sort and it was just a wild guess on my part. So I guess I can do work now....

The last time I tried to use GIMP was around the same time. Hopefully now it's less unusable than it was then. :)
I picked up the CS6 applications when Adobe announced they were moving to a subscription service. Well worth it to me as a DTP hobbyist.
-
@Parody I just noticed it's fairly recently added some warping/distorting tools I've never tried, but other than that I'm pretty proficient with it. I find it usable enough, but then I find Blender usable, too, so I'm definitely an outlier.

Dell?
Their update program said there were 9 updates available. Ok. Install. 0 of 9 successful.
Let's try again - pick 1 (BIOS update), 0 of 1.
Pick something else. 1 of 1! Progress!
Pick another. 1 of 1! (and reboot)
Ok, next? Update: No updates available.
Umm. Ok. (And I know the BIOS update didn't apply during that reboot)

Shopping for an enterprisey ethernet card for my new https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07K8TNGM6 . Is a PCI ethernet card good enough to get to 1000Mb/s?
-
@Captain
The built-in Ethernet ports on the motherboard are both Intel Gigabit server-grade ports. I wouldn't put a card in it at all, just use the onboard Ethernet.
-
@izzion Worse, it's an HP ZXXX. We have a lot of experience with those. A seemingly-random list of PCI/PCIe devices (including the ones we manufacture) only work on a subset of ZXXX machines and we never could find any tangible difference between the systems that worked and those that didn't. There's a reason we don't buy HP workstations anymore.
-
@mott555
Well, was your Computer Expansion Port Enablement License pair up and installed on the workstations? And were you using HP Genuine Certified parts?
