STATUS: On Friday I had a clean up of my desktop PC case. Hoovered out a lot of dust, cleaned the dust filters, removed the CPU cooler and replaced the factory thermal pad (which had been used on 2 different CPUs so wasn't perfect) with some new thermal paste and cleaned out the radiator.
This improved CPU temps under load by nearly 20°C and got the idle temps down to slightly above ambient temp. This morning the Computer Gods rewarded my good work with the bearing failing in the PSU fan

Took my kid to the circus, and one of their show was people in motorcycles running inside a sphere, called the globe of death. At the ending they bragged about one of the motorcyclists being just 12 years old. Is that even legal?

In Poland, it would be. Traffic laws only apply to public roads - including license requirements.
-
@Tsaukpaetra Depending on what / how much you’re sorting (e.g. stacks of paper with names), bucket sort should be simpler and more natural than quicksort. But if it’s already in a spreadsheet kind of software where every manual swap is painful, I’m not sure.

From what I’ve read (and we know there’s no lies on the Internet), jury duty is only for those too stupid to get out of it? Not counting those who do view it as their public duty, of course.

Not thinking on traffic laws, but letting minors do dangerous things for show.

Yeah, imagine a bunch of rows with a small drag handle, and only visibility of about 20 percent of the rows. I completed the sort in half an hour or so.

140 game days or 140 calendar days? Because the latter isn't very impressive, given that tournaments are often weeks or months apart.
-
@izzion it's clearly meant to be "140 day-long streak"; i.e. a day-long streak of the 140 variety (whatever that is)

People are dying in escape rooms too. Should minors be banned from escape rooms?
And what about child labor laws?
I think performance is exempt from that. Otherwise there wouldn't be child actors. Of course it varies heavily between jurisdictions - I'm sure there are places in the world where having child actors is illegal.

It'll be even more fun if they continue to not buckle, and she brings the kid in on court day, and they repeatedly disrupt the trial.

I was dismissed.
The other really funny one was an older woman who was in the first round. When asked if there were any medical reason why she could not fulfill her duties:
"I have trouble hearing."
"I am dealing with a cold, so I have trouble talking today, but if I speak up as best I can do you think you can fulfill your obligations as a juror?"
"....huh?" -shrugs shoulders-
"If she cannot hear then she has medical cause to be dismissed, do either the prosecution or defense object to me dismissing juror #8?"
"No your honor."
"I would not want to take the chance that she did not hear an important part of the trial, no objection to dismissal."
"Ma'am, you are dismissed. Thank you for coming today."
"Thank you your honor, do I need to check in anywhere?"
"No, you are free to go."
"Thank you again your honor."She had no problem hearing that she was dismissed, and he did not say it loudly.
Another guy said he couldn't serve because he could not be away from his work for 2-3 days. He was a truck driver.
I was dismissed because there is honestly no possible way I could have sat in that chair for 3 days. My previous back injury just wouldn't allow it. I told the judge I would be happy to serve but 30 minutes or so would be all I could sit in that horrible chair before I would have to get up for a few minutes. When he asked the lawyers if they had any objections the prosecution said they were fine with it and the defense said they were more than okay with it because I was on their list of people to dismiss anyway. I am not for certain if that was a compliment or an insult, but all the legal people chuckled.
I was annoyed at first, but once I got in there I was sort of looking forward to it.

Well, not really a solution, 'cause sensibly you shouldn't be talking to unsecure shares, but again, license server.

The couple times I've been in, I did find it interesting. Only sat on one jury - we were done just after lunch. I'm convinced the holdouts were just being stubborn long enough to get lunch out of it. (It helps that I get paid salary, so I don't have to worry about ) The other one I barely avoided (I would have been the next alternate) was a lawyer acting as his own council when arguing that the rental company should pay for full replacement value of his goods when he wrecked the rental trailer - really glad I missed that!

@pie_flavor Goddammit why is the documentation installed for every toolchain. I explicitly told it to only install for MSVC.
I'll just uninstall the documentation then. I really can't foresee any scenario where I need to write Rust and don't have internet access.

Status: Got some believable performance figures at scale out of the high speed download code I wrote last year.
It's been awkward to test due to network issues and a bunch of unrelated minor bugs; the system was easy enough to test from my desktop, but would merrily overwhelm the local network without breathing hard. It had to go to server on our high-capacity net for real testing, and that server has been nothing but idiotic bits of pain. But it works now, and looks very good indeed. We'll have to scale up even further to really put it through its paces, which probably means finding even more idiotic bugs in configs and others' code…

I've been thinking about doing this. There's a lot of dust collected on the air inlet vents, and the CPU fan runs faster than it ought to under fairly light load, so it almost certainly needs to be cleaned. Thank you for giving me a reason to continue .

Hey, at least it should be a few massive
rulesfiles instead of millions of tiny files! Should only take a half hour to shove it into spinning Rust!Edit: autocorrect.

I'm pretty sure I've mentioned before that I served on one jury. It wasn't done before lunch, though. I don't remember how long the trial actually took, but it was originally estimated at 6 weeks, and it was close enough to that to not make a difference.
Back then I was salaried, so money wasn't a worry, but getting my assigned tasks done was; I went into work early in the morning before court and in the evening after court. For a while I was going in at lunch, too, but pretty quickly figured out it wasn't worth it; the amount of time I had available to work wasn't worth the time spent going back and forth.
Nowadays, as an hourly contractor, I'd be losing hundreds of dollars a day sitting in court, and I'd have a hard time focusing on the trial when I'd be worrying about my financial situation. Whether that would be an acceptable reason for being excused, though, would be entirely up to the mood of the individual judge. It's a valid reason, but one the judge is not obligated to accept.

The one I sat on was a simple theft case. After we gave our verdict, the prosecution told us (as we finished up / walked out) this was a repeat violation.
