You couldn't just... send me there?Oh yeah, and when you 'search' by citation number, which is the only way to look up your citation, it actually does search it. By each digit, individually. So I got five different search results, even though I entered my number exactly, because my number contained three consecutive zeroes and so did these others.

e: Oh, I get it. No, you just walk onto the train. Occasionally a ticket inspector will come by and make sure you have your ticket, but when I say occasionally I mean they target maybe two trains a day.In increasingly many places in Europe there are electronic gates where you need to scan your ticket before you can access the platform. This may be the norm wherever @stillwater lives too.

. Not bad!

The more modern train stations have that system here in India. The older ones have ticket counters right where you enter the station. The only way you'll be caught without a ticket is if you deliberately try to sneak inside the station without buying one. Fines are heavy AF. unreasonably high.

Status: So today will be an exciting week. Working late today and tomorrow I am going away on a work trip, while I got contacted about that renovations in my house will start friday, so I'll have to go home during tomorrow afternoon (between morning stuff and trip start in evening) to prepare for that too, as well as move stuff to my parents as I'll have to live there while renovations are taking place. And then I'll have a weekend of working (and playing) happening, including one occasion of night duty, perfect for being a zombie on monday.
And my ear is randomly in pain. Ow.

Status Managed to lose the power steering reservoir cap from my car today. There's a small leak (I think the rack seals are gonners) and so I periodically replace the fluid (as a stop-gap until I can get the whole thing redone). I checked the fluid this morning, placing the cap on the car to free up a hand. Then I closed the hood, not remembering that the cap was still not in place. I then heard it fall off on a busy road. I went back and looked, but couldn't find it.
Sigh. Here's hoping
a) the car doesn't explode as I try to get to a parts store today
b) they actually have the needed part.
c) the car survives until mid December, which is the first chance I'll have to take it to a shop for a full repair.

Also, some plastic wrap with a rubber band would do the job in the meantime. The cap doesn't hold any pressure

My Car Status: I had my glow plug controller replaced earlier this year. Apparently it has never worked for as long as I've owned the truck, and it's always been a challenge in winters. But this morning it was 9 degrees outside, and my engine actually started right away without relying on the block heater! Amazing!

My European mind couldn't understand why 9 degrees would ever be a problem. Then the American part kicked in.

If .NET 3.5 to 4.7.2 is 8 major revisions, .NET needs a better version scheme

Assuming it is a court, and not a private fine.
If it's a court, you might be able to file a motion for dismissal due to incorrect paperwork. But more likely the judge would say "Was that citation written for you and given to you because you didn't have a ticket?" So you can either do some perjury, or plead guilty. And since @pie_flavor is neither rich enough or Republican enough, he'll actually get punished for committing perjury.
If it's a private fine, then the worst they can do is ban you from the service and/or send the ticket to collections. Unless they have some sort of agreement or connection with an outside party-- like you can't renew your library card while you have a train fine (?).
If they do ban you, fuck 'em. It's not your name on the No Choo-Choo list.
If they do send it to collections, fuck them. Partially because every collection agency deserves to be fucked hard-- and secondly because they would open a file on a person who doesn't exist.
That all being said, it's up to you as to the ethics of it. You did technical ride the train without a ticket, so paying the fine is the "right" thing to do. There may be a system in place where you can talk to someone, explain it's your first time, the circumstances, etc, and get a reduced fine. Your call.

@Lorne-Kates I had already paid it by the time I noticed.
Generally I pay via a debit card. As retaliation I will start paying by credit card until the difference in transaction fees adds up to $75.

That's not how court works. The accusation (the ticket) is not in your name, so you're not accused of anything.
I know, I got a speeding ticket once where the cops put the first name of the owner of the car (my father) instead of the driver's one (me)
My father told the judge he was not driving the car, he wasn't even in the car.
Then the prosecutor asked my father if he had a son that could have been driving the car.
Before my father could answer...
This has got nothing to do with the current case. Dismissed !!!

I think a Sovereign Citizen could have a field day with that receipt.

Or plead the 5th, because the judge would literally be asking you to testify against yourself if they asked that question.

Those changed quite a bit (in awkward ways) from 1.6 to 1.7. I mention this precisely because it caused us quite a bit of trouble, years ago; it was a PITA.
The module system introduced between 8 and 11 is another area where weird behaviour sneaks in. Fortunately that's not (yet) forced on you.

Windows 10 VM: 50 GB
Windows 10 VM after enabling file compression: 25 GBThat's a lot more wasted space than I expected! Too bad Hyper-V won't let you run it like that.
I wonder if file compression on the inside will work as well?

Sure, or if you're generating classes at runtime, and tons of other reasons. But that's APIs (like the original .NET comparison was to), not the language (like I was sneakily changing the subject to)
-
@TimeBandit Doesn't work that way over here. The owner of the car will get the (speeding) ticket. If the owner disputes that he was driving the car then he'll usually be asked to identify the driver (if the driver isn't identifiable). If he doesn't do that he then may be forced to create a driver's logbook from then on, detailing each and every trip the car takes and who was driving it. That depends on the infraction, though. Lesser cases may be dropped entirely, severe infractions may result in criminal proceedings.
Parking tickets always have to be paid by the car's owner, though.

Except they're probably prevented by statute from doing so, since they're publicly regulated and such.

Usually, I buy other parts to combine shipping cost, like wipers, etc
Also, even with the shipping cost, it's still cheaper than the manufacturer's price
-
@Benjamin-Hall: have you noticed that as things get cheaper, shipping seems to get more expensive to compensate?
