Status: browsing random sites, I see this statistic posted in discussion about danger of cars:
In most regions of the US, automotive accidents are the leading cause of death for people aged 18 to 35.
Well, I'd say it's something to celebrate, not cry about - after all, it means all other causes are rarer than car accidents!

So is it excessive or is it lower than expected?

@homobalkanus the rate at which the excessive heat dissipates is lower than expected rate the excessive heat should dissipate at.

Turns out iterating through 600k cells in a map and replacing textures algorithmically is memory hungry. Who'd a thunk?
It's the bottom item--it's been like that for a while now on my I5 with 8GB RAM.
-
@benjamin-hall said in The Official Status Thread:
memory hungry.
At entry menu, idling:
Loading into the Art Studio map, which has 1.4k user-customized (aka paintable) textures (averaging 512x512 tiles):
I believe they're being rendered as BMP textures, because of how we're (apparently) writing to them using raw data structures (because they're on the GPU or something?).
...
No, I did not spend two hours painting every paintable surface to find out how well it handles this, why do you ask?
Edit: Oh, it does not handle it well at all...

status Panic Mode Enabled
- Updated my Hyper-V configuration from 7.0 to 8.3 (current) without backing up images (Stupid!)
- Spin up VM - looks good.
- Apply snapshot, fail. Oh shit. (I'm maintaining 3 snapshot lines - clean, VS2010/2015, and VS2017) Well, at least the clean vm is running.
- Let's see, close manager, restart.
- Oh SHIT! All snapshots just vanished.
- Quick, take one! Success. Um, there's nothing listed.
- Enable Panic Mode 2.
- Fuck it, reboot machine.
- Start Hyper-V manager - hey, all snapshots are back!
- Start VM, good.
- Apply snapshot, good! (goto previous step)
- All 3 VMs are snapshot lines are good.
Disable All Panic Modes.
Word to the wise (or stupid). After updating a VM's configuration, reboot the entire machine.

Me: "When on <other org's> VPN, I can't connect to their servers. Looks like an NLA issue. I see in the host-based firewall's logs that connections to their domain controllers are being blocked."
My org: turns off host-based firewall
Me: "Still can't connect. Shit. Well, let me explain my action plan to you very carefully. Let's keep the host-based firewall down. I'll get things sorted out over at <other org>. I have a meeting with their CISO tomorrow. I'll make sure we get a successful connection test, then we can bring the host-based firewall up and see if it still works or we need an exemption. Do you concur?"
My org: "Sure."
My org: *then closes ticket, because tickets can't possibly be left open for something that's even partially the fault of another organization, and host-based firewall comes back up*
Me: I... fucking... hate you.Hate my job, hate my client, hate bureaucracy, take your pick.

Got an e-mail about a blood drive, looked it up and huh, I'm not on a lifetime deferral anymore. Not sure when that happened (dates I'm seeing differ), but you'd think someone would contact all the people who used to be on lifetime deferral and say, "Hey, give blood if you can-- you may now be able to."
But no, that'd make too much sense. >.>
It could be life or death for some people. I'm so happy to be able to donate again.
ETA: Pinged a friend of mine who's in health public policy. "Yeah, that happened a few years back". U wot m8. Now I can't tell if the problem is me or them. :P

@heterodox I hate that the Red Cross Web 3.0'd their website so you have to leaf through accordions with two-inch-high titles rather than just read the spec.
Still on lifetime deferral. As an O-neg. God damn it.
-
@heterodox initially I've read "blood drive" as "hard drive", and "lifetime deferral" as "life support".

Are you lacking in familial ties? Do you have no money and the bills are stacking up?
Congratulations! You're a prime candidate for the Human in Equestria self-insertion fanfic program! Prepare to be "accidentally" transported sometime soon (probably after some calamatic event, like an argument with your employer or "friend"), or to witness an Unidentified Glowing Object that you will no doubt investigate and come into contact with!
Good luck and best wishes!

Status: Blacklisting a certain country from Google Adwords. For whatever reason, these guys have an insane click-through rate and they burn up 98% of daily advertising budget. Which would be fine if they bought stuff, but no, according to analytics none of them ever go to my Amazon page. The only link they click is the "wordpress.org" link in the site footer...

@mott555 Is it R or C?
Or, wildcard, Eastern European?
-
@weng Okay, since we're being cryptic, it's I. Not too far from C, but with more people.
(EDIT x345643: One downside of starting a writing career is now I make 1200 revisions before I'm happy with a post here. I can't type out a thought correctly on the first try anymore.)

Status: Imbibing "Ginger Oasis Herbal Tea" from Honest T.
Apparently it's made from water, rooibos leaves, ginger root, flavors, lemon grass, and citric acid.
I'm wondering if I'm supposed to use it as a flavoring or something? This doesn't taste like anything but spice and maybe a little dirt...
Suggestions on what I should be eating with this drink?

@mott555 Indianapolis?

Well, Windows decided to ignore my active hours setting and do updates now, when it had been idle for no more than two minutes.
35 minutes later, it’s at “21% complete” and I’m still waiting for it to restart.
19 minutes later, it jumped 9 percent, and finally restarted. Came back up at 35%, quickly skipped to 87% then 100%, and I’m at my login screen. Wondering why it couldn’t have been even remotely that quick on the first half.
Only security updates, not the jump to the new whatever update is current.

Now leave the site's tab open a while, even if Chrome itself is closed, and watch your phone do a satirical impersonation of the Note 7.

Not that the Red Cross site lists that particular lifetime deferral.
