Status: just got off the phone with a cold call recruiter.
If you have a doctorate in CS, are willing to move to South Texas at your own expense there's a recruiter that wants to put you in a senior application architect position for 22k/yr...
he seemed insulted when i laughed at his offer.
-
i'm not helping anyone else hide a body.... not again.
So much for graduating to my real friends list...
-
i said ntohing about helping FINDING places to hide a body. just the actual doing of it.
but for a sawbuck a piece i know a pair of fellows that'll do the full service for you. ;-)

senior application architect position
/me leans forward, intrigued ...
for 22k/yr...
-
that was my reaction, except he actually lost me at moving to south texas.
i LIKE maine, and i sure as hell am not leaving for about fifth of what i currently make (it's something like that. can't be bothered to do the math to get the decimal places)
-
i have no idea what you mean.
You deny your ninja'd typo in 'sawbuck'?
senior application architect position for 22k/yr
I don't know the normal US wages, but that seems low for a receptionist, let alone a senior architect!
-

no, but i was hoping you'd still be around to see me ninja now->no

it's pretty crappy for any office worker, so yeah.

I was busy creating a pull request for @sockbot. Nothing major, just something to help people whosuffer withchoose to use Windows

@RaceProUK has summoned me, and so I appear.

You rewrote it in Powershell? :D
-
You rewrote it in Powershell? :D
Well, I was going to make my own bot in C#... and I'll still do that. Ain't no way I'ma botherin' wi' Powershell

That sounds quite reasonable... after all, if you have a doctorate, you're already used to making that much! ;-)

doctorate ... 22k/yr
No doubt the cost of living is lower in south Texas, but that's ridiculous. I made more than that fresh out of college with a BS more than 25 years ago.

game ofDota bot matchFTFY.
Why the fuck does your Bane have a Battle Fury?
Why the fuck does your Shadow Demon have a Perseverance?
Why the fuck does your Sniper have a Perserverance? I assume Linkens here, but why not BKB first.
Why did your Juggernaut max healing ward?
Why did your Shadow Demon get four levels of stats at 8, 9, 13, and 14?You got some awful pubs :/
Is this supposed to be a visualization over time? You should make it smaller, it takes up my entire screen.

Sounds like someone has some serious delusions of grandeur here...you're better off hiring on as a track laborer in the broiling Texas heat, I'd say. At least you'd make something approximating a livable income that way! Besides, if someone's pinching that many pennies on pay, what do you think they would provide for fringe benefits?
-
-
That four stack was awful. I hope you didn't take 'pubs' to be 'friends' because it wasn't meant to be that.

I made more than that with no experience and no degree in a college town.
-
I knew what you meant. I was just pointing out that they were all together.
-
Come to think of it, you can make more than that on unemployment, if you had a sufficiently high-paying job before you became unemployed. (In California it caps at $450/week => $23400/year. This was accurate as of about 5 years ago. I don't know about any other states, nor changes since then.)

Recruiter: "I have this fantastic opportunity for you! You now have the chance to be come a senior application architect!"
Me: "Alright, where, and how qualified do you have to be?"
Recruiter: "South Texas, and they're after the best they can get"
Me: "Sounds good so far. What's the pay like?"
Recruiter: "Uh...22k a year"
Me: breaks down laughing, then responds once he finally recovers "Are you really sure you didn't leave a 1 off that number, sir?"
Recruiter: "No...no sir! I would do no such thing!"
Me: "Well then, I can gross twice that much working manual labor repairing railroad tracks. You have one last chance to put that 1 in there sir..."
Recruiter: "Who do you think you are, a fool? Look, this is a chance to be part of a groundbreaking Web technology!"
Me: sarcastically "Good luck finding someone. I bet that all your candidates will get poached. By my employer. As manual laborers working outdoors." hangs up the phone

i was making double that BEFORE i got my BS.

I'm sorry.
Not really.

Does the recruiter also write articles for alternet?
The top five members of Congress are worth more than the GDP of entire countries. At $200.5 million, Republican Dave Trott’s personal wealth is greater than the GDP of both Peru and Iraq ($200,269 and $195,517, respectively).

Thank you, Windows File History, for not backing up the hundreds of gigabytes of disc images and installers I had saved. I really really want to spend a week ripping old game discs again. And I really really want to spend a ton of time trawling the web for old download-only software which I have valid licenses for, but no discs.
FYI: If you rely on File History, don't dump stuff in c:\users\username because that location isn't backed up. Put it in c:\users\username\documents
-
Dave Trott's net worth really is greater than the GDP of entire countries: Tuvalu, Montserrat, Nauru, Kiribati and Marshall Islands. Peru and Iraq? Um, no.
Mathing is hard, derp.

I think I was making more than that...in high school. Jesus fuck, how do they expect to fill that position? If I were that recruiter, and that came across my desk, it would never leave the bottom of the pile. Waste of time.

Thought I would have an exciting Friday night and do at least a preliminary pass at my taxes so I know how to budget for the next couple months. (I did a run a few months back with some guesses as to numbers, because otherwise I have no idea what to expect, and came out probably owing a little more than $1K, but who knows how accurate that will wind up being.)
I've used TurboTax's free edition in the past, but that doesn't work for me this year and the next step up seems expensive. Now I'm trying to decide whether I should drop the new idea of using H&R Block's over this little gem...

Status: Trying to get back into my personal project which I've been ignoring since before Christmas, at about 12:45am on a Friday night:
$ { for i in DEV*; do echo $i; echo --------; svn stat -q $i; echo; done } > stat.out
There, that should do for now, at least I have a report on what I was doing last year. I'm on vacation in about 5 days. It'll be February before I get back up to speed...

Amazing. I have the exact same combination on my luggage

That's an improvement. They used to silently truncate it.
Other than the password, I've had good experience with H&R Block (as much as a tax experience can be, I suppose) for the last...umm...six years, I think?
-
-
Try TaxAct. They don't cost as much as TurboTax. We are only paying them $6 this year.
-
About to go to bed because I can't keep my eyes open any longer.
Disabled the alarm, but woke up at about the usual time anyway, after less sleep than I wanted. 6.5 hours is adequate, but I was really hoping to sleep in late. I can't remember the last time I got a full night's sleep.
-
Congratulations!
@tar: I was going to make exactly the same post, but since @boomzilla already battled Discourse to make the quote work right, I'll just second his congratulations. May you be very happy.
-

There is evidence to say that getting a full 8 hours a night can shorten your lifespan. Not by much, but enough to be measurable.
The ideal amount is about 5-7 hours, so your 6.5 is about right ;)
-
Congratulations!
congratulations
Thanks! It's our first anniversary, but we didn't take a honeymoon when we got married, for reasons probably not worth explaining in detail. We're going to Paris!
-
We're going to Paris!
I've never been there, but I think this isn't the best time of year to go there. OTOH, my (ex-)wife and I went to London in February, so I'm not one to talk.
