@gąska No. Because people would.

Any recommendations of PC-side firewalls that Windows Update cannot bypass? I imagine it can bypass the built-in one quite easily.
I know for a fact that it does not bypass Windows Firewall, and you can block inbound/outbound traffic by Windows service.
(I don't know why you'd assume that it tries to bypass firewalls at all. Microsoft is not a malware distributor here.)
Because people would figure that out easily, and it would be #1 result when you search "how to disable Windows Update"?
Anyway. Gonna try that. Then manually check for updates. If something breaks, that'll be on you.

Check for updates. Don't install them.

Status: Headphones fell apart yet again, and this time they're not going back together. Time for another game of Find the Only Half Decent Pair of Earbuds in All of Amazon.
You can pay $ for "good" earphones, or $/10 for 10 pairs of "good enough" earphones.
I use these ones (though usually pick them up in the grocery store when they go on sale). They last, I dunno, 6 months-1 year before one of the ears starts to get crackly.
I went with these. I dunno if it was a good idea.

Found some SO rando with a good advice:
- Create a new user in your windows with some password
- Go to services.msc -> BITS
- Right click properties and go to the logon tab, select local account and provide the new user name with a wrong password
- Go to general tab and in Start up type select disable BITS is stopped for ever.
I wonder if MS would work around it if it got enough publicity.

Mind you, the hardware incompatibility in question is physical damage
Assuming that's an onboard device, can you turn it off in the BIOS/UEFI configuration screen?
He's mentioned elsewhere his BIOS is castrated and can't do that.
Edit: Technical right after the linked post, but since it wasn't a reply to said post I didn't grok it for what it was and thought @Gąska was just meaninglessly quoting himself... Whoops.

playing Witcher (the original, 2007 one).
Did you do the trading card sex scene? So (unintentionally) hilarious that I laughed so hard I almost died.
Unfortunately once i was done laughing I threw the game in the bin thinking, "what the fuck were the designers of this shit game thinking!?" WTF.
The real shame is I kind of want to play Witcher 3, but that first game was so offensive and horrible that I'd never spend money on anything in that series again. Jesus. What were they thinking!?
-
@blakeyrat Witcher 3 has like 100x bigger budget and is 100x better in literally every way than 1. It's the best RPG game of the decade, maybe ever. Even the most mundane contract quests are more entertaining than Skyrim's entire main questline.

It lacks the one thing I care about in an RPG: you can't make your own character.

But what's the point if you have to play as the douchebag on the box? I hate that guy.
There's basically zero companies out there making Bethesda-style RPGs. At the moment, not even fucking Bethesda makes them. There's a goddamned huge market there, if any game developers would fucking figure it out.
It really pisses me off.
Games I would probably really enjoy if I didn't have to play as the douchebag on the box:
Far Cry series
Witcher III
Kingdom Come: Deliverance

Does it really matter that much? Look at Bethesda's games. No matter what race you play, what class you pick, what sex you are, there's zero gameplay differences. Also, custom characters lack backstory. Though I can understand how being able to create ginger midgets named Mr. Fuckface can appeal to some people.
Point is. It might not be 100% your style, but if you like good story with meaningful choices, you're missing out a lot.

I know, isn't that great? Tall, short, black, white, female, male, lizard, cat, in Bethesda games everybody's equal.

I played Witcher I, the backstory is "wow this guy's an asshole".

@blakeyrat if it helps, in W3 he's much less of a douchebag (if you want to). Also, you can get different haircut.

@tsaukpaetra remember the graphics programming 4th commandment:

I'm doing my damndest, but it seems to be ignoring me. So far I'm trying literally everything and it still doesn't work:
private void OnChanged(NotifyCollectionChangedEventArgs e) { try { CollectionChanged?.Invoke(this, e); System.Diagnostics.Debug.WriteLine("UpdateX: OK " + e.Action); } catch (Exception ex) { System.Diagnostics.Debug.WriteLine("UpdateX: " + ex.Message); //throw; } if (System.Threading.SynchronizationContext.Current != null) { try { System.Threading.SynchronizationContext.Current.Send(x => CollectionChanged?.Invoke(this, e), myDispatcher); System.Diagnostics.Debug.WriteLine("Update0: OK " + e.Action); } catch (Exception ex) { System.Diagnostics.Debug.WriteLine("Update0: " + ex.Message); //throw; } } else { try { CollectionChanged?.Invoke(this, e); System.Diagnostics.Debug.WriteLine("Update1: OK " + e.Action); } catch (Exception ex) { System.Diagnostics.Debug.WriteLine("Update1: " + ex.Message); //throw; } try { myDispatcher.Invoke(DispatcherPriority.Render, new Action(() => CollectionChanged?.Invoke(this, e))); System.Diagnostics.Debug.WriteLine("Update2: OK " + e.Action); } catch (Exception ex) { System.Diagnostics.Debug.WriteLine("Update2: " + ex.Message); //throw; } } }
This is being called from an object for the which I constructed with the WPF's
Application.Current.Dispatcher
dispatcher, operations which trigger this event are being called inside:if (UIThreadDispatcher != null) { System.Diagnostics.Debug.WriteLine("Executing command in sync context."); UIThreadDispatcher.Invoke(() => Task.Run(() => ParseCommand(packet.Data)),DispatcherPriority.Render); } else { System.Diagnostics.Debug.WriteLine("Executing command OUTSIDE sync context."); ParseCommand(packet.Data); }
Which gives output like:
Executing command OUTSIDE sync context. UpdateX: OK Reset Exception thrown: 'System.NotSupportedException' in PresentationFramework.dll Update1: OK Reset UpdateX: This type of CollectionView does not support changes to its SourceCollection from a thread different from the Dispatcher thread. Which is patently insane, because at no point is the dispatcher reference null.... :face_with_cold_sweat: Well, as long as the application is not shutting down of course.

I think it can be accomplished by putting the image twice, the one in the background set to be grayscale and the one in front overlaying it with a specific width, but so far my efforts have been... unfruitful.Will ponder for tomorrow.
