So I was causally browsing the web. First Firefox crashed. Just shut down without managing to display the crash dump submitter. Restarted. Certain websites would crash the tab upon load. Weird... Try starting Chrome. Chrome refuses to start. The process is there but not doing anything. Oh well. Try to start Edge. Screen goes completely black with just a mouse pointer and the computer needed to be power cycled. At least everything is back to normal now.
-
@atazhaia Did you check in Task Manager that your memory wasn't leaked?
My mother's computer does something similar, I think it's the Wifi drivers.
-
Status: Apparently I got logged out of Reddit at some point.
-
@tsaukpaetra Well, there was what looked like a memory leak going on, but not in Firefox. Also, Windows reported using 49% RAM. Although something similar did happen recently, where iirc it only showed ~half the RAM in use but all virtual memory allocated to something. Weird stuff. Would have checked but Edge bringing down the computer kinda prevented that,

I'm saying my penis is very long. Ask your mother.

You're going to use the word "suck" when we're talking about your mother? Just setting them up, aren't you?
-
@lorne-kates No, you're talking about my mother. I'm talking about how your jokes are god-awful.

Who said I'm joking about your mother?
-
@lorne-kates Well, if you weren't joking, them that would mean you'd gone completely and utterly insane, and should probably take a break from the forums again.

Your logical fallacy is black and white etc...

@lorne-kates It is black and white. Either you're joking, or you're under the delusion that you did do it.

Um, okay.
Incorrect results were probably because my computer is so old Speccy didn't know how to query. Had six slots, two in use; added four DIMMs and now my computer has its (unregistered) max of 24 GB! Was glad to see no problems even though I cheaped out and got non-ECC RAM and mixed it with the existing.

That would normally be quite appetizing to me. Right now though, I'm focusing on not regurgitating this cup of water.

Car got booted.
In a private garage. Having arrived well after 5pm (parking in that garage is free after 5). In a city where there are literally no regulations or licensing requirements to boot a car on private property.
That said, there are very much licensing requirements for operating a private paid parking lot in the city, and this very much violates those. I happen to have the mayor's phone number right here from a prior life (he was a dirty environmentalist hippie then, not mayor).
I also happen to know the local bar owners, who pay serious money to have that garage be free after 5.
This will be fun. And the most expensive $125 they will ever make.

Status: My ex is getting ready to move out of state and wants to get together and sort out photos before she goes. (Joy; maybe neither of us will commit murder before we're done.) A lot of photos, we have double prints, which makes stuff a lot easier, and in order to minimize the opportunity for conflict my son and I have been going through and splitting them into separate sets so my ex and I don't have to sit together to do it.
However, a lot have only a single print. In another attempt to minimize conflict over who gets the keep each of these pictures, I have embarked on a major project to scan everything we don't have two of.
My scanner is decent enough, but it is so old that Epson never released 64-bit drivers for it; I would have to pull out my old 32-bit XP box to use it. So I bought a new scanner today. The only photo scanner they had at Fry's cost like 4x the price of the cheap all-in-one copier/scanner/printer units they had, but I suspect it has higher resolution than any of the all-in-ones (although I haven't actually read their specs), and it has a built-in negative/slide scanner. That's an accessory I never got around to getting for my old one. And I bought
43.63TB of spinning rust to put the pics on.Three hours, three or four attempts at installing the drivers, two reboots, and more screaming and swearing than I've done since (at least) before my ex and I split up, and the scanner finally scans. Quite well, actually. But getting there was very frustrating.
30-ish pictures scanned so far; maybe 300 to go. (Wild guess. My son and I have sorted maybe 20–25% of the photos, and I've just started scanning the pictures I already know need to be scanned; I have no real idea how many of the not-yet-sorted photos will need to be scanned.)

I've been using a 32-bit XP VM recently (since the malware I'm reverse engineering doesn't work in Vista+ [note to professors: this means you have outdated samples]). What I've learned is that boy, I've acquired a lot of muscle memory/shortcuts in the past decade that don't work in XP.

6 slots, 24 GB maximum, uses ECC memory... Socket 1366 Xeon perchance?
And if Speccy can't query that platform because it's too old that's kinda because I would not call c:a 2008-2011 so old a program wouldn't be able to query it.
Also, another minor is running two RAM modules on a triple-channel motherboard. Want three or six for maximum speed!

Yep.

Eh. I don't know why Speccy couldn't query it. But on the plus side, not affected by much in the way of Intel Management Engine vulnerabilities!
Also, another minor is running two RAM modules on a triple-channel motherboard. Want three or six for maximum speed!
Yeah, I have no idea why it was CTO like that.

At least they're easier (and quicker) to copy than the prints!

Gee, that sounds rather familiar. I'd link to my adventures in upgrading my RAM, but .
@atazhaia said in The Official Status Thread:

Indeed, and my BIOS complains every time I boot, but as related in thread, I ordered the wrong part number for the other two DIMMs, and I have never gotten around to tracking down the right ones.
-
@hardwaregeek I had some fun upgrading my computer over the years. First of all, my board only has support for i7, not Xeon (or any Xeon-specific features) which is a bit of a I guess. The RAM I upgraded when they were selling off the remaining triple-channel memory kits when the X58 was gone from the market, so I could get the 24GB cheap. Even got a 1600MHz kit.
Then it came to upgrading the CPU, which is another Now, the i7 and the Xeon line for socket 1366 are identical, except for the Xeon versions having ECC support and a couple other extra features. So, you'd think the Xeons would be more expensive, then? Nope! The i7 costs like 2-3 times as much on the used market compared to the equivalent Xeon. Yay for paying extra money for a pretty much equal product! But at least I can say I'm running an i7 Extreme, which sounds cooler.

@pleegwat said in The Official Status Thread:

Either way, whether I have prints or scans, I have a copy and I'm ok with that. I would like at least a few of the prints, but in any case, I have physical copies of all the pictures that have double prints, which is most of them, so far.
@heterodox said in The Official Status Thread:
I've been using a 32-bit XP VM recently
I already have the box with XP and all the appropriate software installed. Setting up a VM would pose the problem that I don't actually have the XP installation media to install it on the VM, or if I do, I don't know where it is. Likewise the Epson software. Also, setting up a VM is one of those things I've never actually needed to learn how to do, so there's that, too.
Also, I discovered the new scanner/software (I'm not sure where the intelligence resides) has a convenient capability that the old one doesn't. I can scan multiple photos at the same time, and the scanner/software will detect the edges of each photo (iff there's a gap between them) and automatically scan each one into a separate file. (Edit: Also, it will automatically straighten them if they're put into the scanner a little crooked.) That took time and effort to do manually with my old scanner.
Edit: OTOH, every time the computer goes to sleep from being idle, the software forgets how to talk to the scanner, and has to be closed and restarted. Also, I keep turning off "unsharp mask," but it keeps turning it back on again. Grr.

Fair enough. My particular problem here is all the green growing things. There's like 25 species of trees that spread their pollen one after another through about early May. And I'm allergic to every single stinking one of them.
