Soon, you'll be thrown in jail for looking at someone.

Sad, somehow:
I don't know how I feel about HTML image tags, but I've said for decades that code editors should be more like word processors (including the ability to embed images/diagrams) and less like plain text.
We don't have to work like it's still 1985. We just do because this industry is full of morons.Yes, why sad? This looks great.
I only wish there was some cross-editor standard for these embedded images. There are 3 devs in my team and each uses a different editor.

Finally solved a problem that's been the bane of my existence for two weeks and in as much time resulted in three support cases with different vendors... by setting one JVM property.
I swear, the more complex any technical issue, the more likely it is to be solved by a one-line code or configuration change. Now to rebuild one of the servers that was totally destroyed in the diagnostic and fix testing process...

Shan't; I don't drink. :P
Wasn't really troubleshooting alone, was working with vendors' engineers, but of course they ended up not being that helpful and I did end up finding the workaround myself. Ah well, that's the way it goes; at least having them involved confirmed it wasn't something dumb that I did but actually a complex issue w/one vendor's security fix causing a subtle change in interaction w/another vendor's component that promptly shit the bed and broke the third vendor's system.
-
@heterodox
Hm, well, maybe you could keep them in reserve as a sort of @PJH -symbol for reinforcements on a future issue

The Monday mettle fell through, but next mettle is already scheduled for Friday, 1 PM CET.
In other news, I had a meeting with the outsourcing mastermind we'll be offloading a bunch of work to and he's everything I imagined him to be. Smooth talking, outwardly confident, will never actually touch the code himself but will hand it over to his "mates", and will probably ruin us in the end.

Status: Today in the world of bizarre technology questions one didn't know one needed to ask... how does a gMSA determine what directory to use for Temp space, and how does one change that?
-
@izzion I believe it should be the same way as any other profile, the TEMP and TMP environment variables. Once the MSA has logged in once, you should be able to load the user's hive and change in the Environment subkey if you wish.
Edit: Oh, right, you may not have a profile since the gMSA doesn't log on interactively... you can try this or using runas to open a cmd, but it's starting to look like uncharted waters. If you're okay with changing the directory to use for Temp space for all users, system environment variables are the way to go, probably.
Or if you have a certain process you want to change TEMP for, you can do it in a parent process e.g. cmd /c "set TEMP=C:\Temp&&service_exec"... like most things in Windows, probably a hundred ways to do what you want and the best depends on the specifics of your scenario.

@heterodox
Yeah, from looking at it the MSA does create the usual keys in HKLM for ProfileLocation and the usual folder in HKU where I can fiddle with the Environment keys.

@cursorkeys If you need them, your code is already untidy, and they're just hiding it a little. Especially inside methods.

@magus said in The Official Status Thread:

That's a valid argument and I do try to use them appropriately and not to hide the fact there is an overbloated class/method that should be refactored. I don't often use them at method level but that bit of code enclosed in my screenshot made a graph so I thought it was neater to have a
#region Trend Graph
round it.
I could have moved it out to a separate method but most of it is specific to that one graph so it didn't make sense for re-use, a separate method would almost be code for the sake of code.
-
@cursorkeys It could be code for the sake of code, or it could be a segment of code with a meaningful name - much like a region, except that it is always just a name. Regions feel like far more of a hack than frivolous methods.

Hmm, I'll put more thought into when I use them from now on. I hadn't really given much thought to it before.

Sublime and VSCode, where you have to edit the settings file in JSON format because they were too lazy to write dialogs? Yeah. Those two ain't convincing me.
I don't know anything about JetBrains stuff except it's in Java so I avoid it like the plague.

Status: Tomorrow we have a big IT meeting with our service provider to discuss the state of the union and also what we want next.
This will be fun.
I already detailed the various issues but one part of what we currently have is this: Pupils can startup the PCs without having to provide credentials but if they want to access their personal files, they have to log in through a client (which seems to be stuck in the Win95 era, icon-wise) and then their various network shares are connected.
This has the slight problem of a) not allowing them to access their files from their own devices inside the network and b) not allowing them to access their files from anywhere from outside our school's network.
However, a big requirement handed down to us is the ability for (some) of the pupils to be able to access their files from anywhere and on any device.
So, tomorrow we'll ask our provider to provide us with a solution to make this possible.
Given the fact that they don't use standard tools like, for example, Windows' AD (thus no LDAP nor CIFS) and also don't have other interfaces (like, say, OAuth2) to provide identification services to 3rd party tools, I'm not too optimistic.
I mean this is a company which initially tried to sell us on the feature of being able to look up a user's password.
I'm still not sure why this detail didn't immediately disqualify them but I wasn't asked.
Anyone want to place a bet on whether they'll commit to this feature or not?
-
@rhywden said in The Official Status Thread:

Oh, they'll commit to it. They'll tack on a ridiculously hugely-priced line item to the bill, start "development", and then it'll be in development hell for ~15 years.

They only get paid after they deliver and they'll get a hard deadline.

I recommend you stay away from developing lexical analyzers and TCP/IP stacks, in that case. They are rather important for those things, among others. OTOH, there are quite a few other things which I wouldn't consider them a suitable model for, so... yeah.
