Status: I think I may have cooked my brain over the weekend. It's just as hot today but I got to work before it got beyond 'it might be nice if this was a bit cooler' and the office temperature is reasonable in a t-shirt, but my head is all fuzzy.
Gonna be uncomfortable walking home, and my ice bottle is almost finished.

Status: Cursing a bit at the ineptitude of this software company's solution we have chosen to implement.
I'm still not sure why we didn't go with a solution by a big-name vendor like HP or Faronics or at least use the solution which 90% of the schools around us are using...
Anyway, I digress. So, this particular bootloader they implemented needs to renew a certificate every 90 days. Why exactly it does need to do this I don't really know or why it has to be 90 days.
Last time I stumbled over this was because this renewal cannot be done over WLAN. So, I was told that each Surface had to connect to the LAN at that point. So we bought those USB-To-LAN adapters - one adapter for each Surface because their management software cannot deal with changing hardware signatures for the same MAC or something.
I kind of forgot about this until today when 60% of my Surfaces suddenly refused to boot.
Okay, so simply plug in the adapter, connect them to the network switch in my cabinet I had them put there for this very reason (and which they used the last time because I didn't want to schlepp 25 Surfaces from one building to the other and back), reboot and Bob's your uncle, right?
Yeah, no. None of them showed any reaction. Okay, I made do with the remaining 40% while trying several things to revive the others.
Nothing seemed to help. I took a look at the switch itself which I hadn't really touched before ( I had merely grabbed one network cable which was connected to the switch).
Why is there no cable connected to the Up-/Downlink ports? Ah, the uplink is connected to port 23 instead! And why on Earth is port 14 and 17 showing activity even though nothing is plugged in? Because port 14 is connected to 21 and port 17 to 25, that's why!
After correcting that, I was able to revive at least 2 Surfaces. I'm not sure, though, that it had anything to do with the cable chaos. But seriously, that kind of inept cable connectivity does not inspire confidence in our IT guys.
I'm currently purging the shit software from my Surfaces with great prejudice. Let's see if the disk cloning solution by the c't works as well as it should or if I need a more professional solution.
All I need at this point is a key for our Office volume license and either the certificate for our WLAN or a Surface User on our AD.

If you have a good digital multimeter you could probably get a pretty decent idea of it based on the water's resistance.
-
@Tsaukpaetra has it been opened? Then it's not pure anymore. It's probably still better than deionized water though. You could test the pH--water picks up carbonic acid by absorbing co2 from the air. Pure is 7, rain is about 6.
-
@Tsaukpaetra The easiest method is the destructive one: Spit in it and you can be sure it's not.

They're counting on you losing the certificate.
Yep, that was rhetorical. Either losing the certificate or not having any travel plans for the future to which you can apply it.
No, they're perfectly happy to have you use the certificate.
If they give you a certificate for $200, they guarantee that you have to come back there and spend it. They have a profit margin, so giving you the certificate costs them less than its face value, and it makes sure that you're a repeat customer, and possibly a happy customer if they do better the next time -- at the very least, it gives them one more chance at it. But if they gave you $200 cash, it'd be the last they saw of it, and possibly of you.
Yeah. But it shouldn't be allowed to expire!

I don't know that it will expire. When I've gotten certificates in the past (for being bumped), they haven't. Also can't be bothered to check though.

I was referring to an earlier post (not gonna search for it!) where the poster commented on <cheap airline> the cert expired after about 90 days.

Speaking of certificates, I think I know what solution you're talking about. Yeah, it's kind of a pain in the ass but can be configured to be less onerous.

Yeah, the flight certificate won't work very well with a boot loader!

Though if flight certificates could be digital certificates... that'd be awesome. Non-repudiation, could build them up to a trust anchor... guess it'd be annoying to move between computers for those not used to them, but I'd just like to think all security problems could be solved by digital certificates. :D

Just found out my servers' IPs on the management VLAN are assigned to "France Telecom Orange". Needless to say, that's not the agency that assigned them.
... I swear I just saw something like this in another WTF thread. You freaking guys want to use RFC 1918 IPs or what? It's there for a reason.

@JazzyJosh nope, this happens on the first (and only) call during a given script execution.

My guess would be some assumption the query optimizer made no longer holds, like "this table has these columns".
