Trying to shut down my Windows VM mid-update. Should have started earlier as it takes forever. Although it's interesting to see how it keeps pinning one CPU core at a time, swapping the active core at random intervals between #10, 11 and 12. The VM has 3 hyper-threaded cores to play with, for 6 logical CPUs.

and of course Midrosoft is just trying to make the best possible user experience possible given the existing ecosystem that is unfortunately infested with apps that are misbehaved. and of course people constantly blame Microsoft for that instead of the apps that abused them and Microsoft is trying to rescue them from their abusive software.
Why not just show a dialog "this app is trying to set xyz as the default app for abc. Allow/Disallow/Don't-show-again-for-this-app"?

shouldn't you be contacting building maintenance or maybe even the fire department and not some software firm at the other end of the country (even if that country is only small).
Fake Edit: they obviously mean that the software is blocked with some error message they don't bother to tell us about and that their department is physically located in the basement as opposed to their colleagues who are allowed to work above ground level.
Faker Edit: Damn right. Walloon idiots like this shouldn't be left out! Keep the basement tightly shut!

Status: Composing an exam. I am outlining a product portfolio that the students should work with:
- McCoy: A medical application, old and moody.
- Uhura: A social networking app that allows users to communicate in their native tongue, translating on the fly to a universal language.
- Scott: A custom-built application to keep track of a company's engine fleet.
- Sulu: A control software for "smart homes".
- Checkov: A navigational app to suggest excellent sites for picnics and other landfalls.
Sadly, I am not expecting this batch of students to pick up the references.

STATUS: Had to split some documentation up into smaller bullet points, because whoever wrote it decided it was a good idea to have three simple bullet points and the rest as a wall of text. Now all of it is simple and labeled bullet points so I can actually get the relevant information from a quick glance.
Also, I need to reconfigure my VM when it moves out of testing. The test "hardware" makes it a computer with an i440FX (Pentium Pro/Pentium II) motherboard equipped with a Nehalem Xeon 3-core CPU, 12GB of RAM and a Radeon R7 370 connected to a PCI slot.

Because it worked so well with UAC.
You're missing a crucial detail - the "Don't show again for this app" option (which persists between sessions/restarts). With this, I wouldn't have minded enabling UAC on my machine, either.

@Maciejasjmj That looks horrible!
Anyway, still waiting for someone to explain why I'd use NUnit when MSTest2 has all the things.
People seem really set on just having you use a specific test library in a tutorial for something else, which is my main annoyance.
"Here's how you use Selenium: Step 1: Install NUnit" - NO, you can use whatever you want, don't make people think they need NUnit!
And then you have XUnit, MbUnit, and all the others because people wanted slightly different syntax, and no one will tell you why they use one or another.
What I like about MSTest2 is, Visual Studio can run your tests continuously (admittedly you need Enterprise, which probably costs your company more than NCrunch does), has all the types of tests I need, is first party, is really easy to use, and you don't even need a special project type, or even a separate project.

To open phones and such.
Man, I found out recently changing hard drives is so much easier than it used to be. I remember having to screw the drive in, find the IDE cable, find the smaller power cable, set master/slave jumpers appropriately... when I got a new hard drive this week, I opened up my computer and found out all I had to do was pull a bay out, secure the drive in the bay using these screws that are spring loaded into the holes in the drive, no tools needed, slap the drive back in, and I was good to go. It was so good.
-

Worst case you'll need a Phillips screwdriver. That was my point.

not true!
i only ended up using the antistatic wrist strap because my case is toolless (with thumbscrews but i never tighten them down with tools so they come off with finger pressure)
i also used the triwing bit for putting the old WD green (i could have sworn it was a blue) into an external case because the chinesium brand i cot for 2 bucks had triwing screws and the included driver to use them was a phillips so...... yay chinesium! but of course that doesn't count because that's not my case upgrade
but anyway....... i always have way more waste/spare parts than i think i will after take apart my case.....
I just can't figure out why that would be.
-

I see the confusion now. I was speaking of the overall utility of that kit vis a vis my own use cases, not what @accalia was doing.

In more than 30 years working on PCs, I've never used an antistatic strap. Just discharge your static by touching something grounded (like a metal part of your PC case while still plugged in) before starting working.
putting the old WD green (i could have sworn it was a blue)

i have a rule, never try to fix something that I can't lift.

i used to have a friend who did that but then he got his master mechanic certification thingie and moved out of state to where he could have a more lucrative shop.

my dad had a Volkswagen (Gacel|Voyage|Fox). after we changed the... camshaft? i think.
we found about 1kg of screws and bolts surplus. my dad shrugged and said: "see, these germans don't have a clue about engineering. look at all that useless bolts"
i think that car kept going for at least 6 years more
