So, I have a WebJob that runs a couple dozen SQL procedures every hour. All the procedures run in seconds, and one at a time in strict sequence.
Except one: it always times out.
But here's the weird thing: when I run it manually? Done in seconds.

@RaceProUK
I assume you checked the obvious for parameters you're passing manually versus in the WebJob...Not sure there's a way you can get an SQL Profiler trace of the WebJob to see what connection options it's using, but maybe the Googles has something that can tell you what connection options to emulate when connecting via SSMS?

It's parameterless.
Basically, in SSMS, I run
EXEC procedure
. Admittedly, the WebJob goes through LINQ to SQL, but I use the bit where I give it a procedure name and it executes it, so it's effectively also doingEXEC procedure
.

Status: Enthusiasm for Android dev has now fully evaporated.
I'm not sure Android Studio could get more unstable if it tried. I spent this afternoon re-installing it as the update it tried to install this morning failed halfway through and broke everything. Looking online the only solution that worked for other people with the same errors was nuke it and try again.
Now it's reinstalled, and updated successfully, I managed to finally try my beautiful and elegant solution for a problem that I worked on all of yesterday.
It compiles...app crashes. Turned out you can't have an XML Drawable as the source for a Bitmap because of reasons.
Ok, we'll use an <item android:drawable> instead!
Try it and it's been stretched to full screen?!? This turns out to be a bug in the API level I have to target.Now doing it a horrible hacky, wasteful way that might actually work because I don't care anymore. Is it time for beer yet?

@Cursorkeys My issues with nuget nonwithstanding, have you thought about giving Xamarin on VisualStudio a go?
-
@RaceProUK
The most likely thing then would be a difference in the ANSI connection options that the WebJob/LINQ is setting, versus the default options for SSMS. I know even just for SSMS versus ASP.NET, there are options that have different defaults and can cause some occasional fun, but I don't know what the WebJob defaults are, sorry :(
-
@izzion I would have thought such a difference would have affected all sprocs, but it's only affecting one of the 20 or so, and it's always the same one
-
@RaceProUK
It can definitely depend on the procedure and the connection option in question.That said, I am mostly just taking stabs in the dark, so all suggestions guaranteed wrong or your money back

I have, it looks very nice and I'm really going to push for it on the next project.
I'm working with my boss on this one and he's already written his portions, more's the pity.

always the same one
I remember putting in a timing statement in between all the others so I could tell where in the procedure it was getting stuck. Maybe that could help?
It was just a bunch of raise error lines, can't remember the full detail but entity framework would display the output if it times out as part of the inner exception.

query plan shenanigans. Different contexts can have different execution estimates

I've released Alien Swarm mods on The Fourth of July, May the Fourth, and (on Steam) 4/20.
I'm not sure if there are any special dates with a 4 in them left. In any case, I'm done modding Alien Swarm for the foreseeable future.

In a shocking development today, the budget has been pulled for the massive project I've been working on for ages.

.Of course it's a bit surreal when you get congratulations from colleagues who missed my birthday yesterday right after getting the call that your grandmother just died. :(
-
@Rhywden that sucks. :(
-
@Arantor It's a good thing that I had only 90 minutes of lessons to give and that I got the call after those lessons were finished.
Thus I can spend the day reminiscing undisturbed and then distract myself with abandon when it gets too much.

Just found this:
for i = 1 to 2 if i = 1 then #do something end if if i = 2 then #do some more things end if next i

That's an impressive way to increase the value of your code, for people who are paid by SLOC.

Nice, been a while since we last saw the for-case paradigm. Although this is of course a variant without case.

They actually sent me an email from a Microsoft Azure Inside Opportunity Manager "welcoming me to the Azure community", offering me to "contact them for any information I might need for my purchase". And I'm pretty sure they actually called me (I didn't pick up, but the number is listed as Azure).
I've had a free Azure account for like 3 months and I have 2 Web Services, one disabled. No idea why they think I'm a big important customer.

It's not that. Their sales reps are just that bored they've dug out the bottom of the barrel and have started mining for a well...

I literally just signed up for a free account and did nothing with it. The opportunity guy emailed and called within DAYS.
