Status: Today has not gone at all according to plan. Tonight was supposed to be a public "star party" at a local state park, hosted by the local astronomical society. I was signed up to be one of the astronomical society volunteers hosting the party. I was going to take my telescope and camera. I need to finish a bracket to attach the camera to the telescope.
I have an adapter to attach the camera to the telescope's eyepiece, but it puts the entire weight of the camera on the telescope's focusing tube, which really isn't designed to support that much weight. I'm machining an aluminum bracket to support the camera. Due to the small size of my milling machine, this is more complicated than it would be with a bigger mill, Drilling and tapping the holes for the screws to assemble the two pieces of the bracket can't be done with the mill at all; the piece of aluminum is just too tall. I have to drill those holes with my (mini) drill press. To do that, I have to build a fixture to hold the aluminum plate on its edge, perpendicular to the drill press's base, and clamp that to the base so I can keep it aligned with where the holes need to be drilled while I slide the workpiece to the next hole. I.e., the fixture keeps the holes aligned with the center of the thickness of the plate, while I manually position the relatively noncritical length axis.
All this took rather longer than I planned, but I was finally ready to drill the holes in the aluminum. The drill press, however, was not. My drill press uses these belts.
AFACT, they really don't like being stored in the hot Texas summer. Or something. When the original belt gave out, the first replacement lasted a reasonable length of them, but when it gave out, I went through the other belts I bought at the same time in rapid succession. I went through three belts today; I didn't even finish the first of the 6 holes I need to drill.
I ordered more, but they won't be here until late next week, at the earliest. And I just realized I didn't buy enough of them. I bought 5 last time, and for some reason I thought they came in packages of 5, so I ordered 2. However, they don't; they're sold individually, so I bought only 2 belts, not the 2 5-packs I thought I was getting. I need to order more right away, because those 2 may not last long at all.
So I couldn't finish the bracket, and can't until at least next week.
However, it doesn't matter that I didn't get it finished for this evening. Tonight's star party was canceled due to cloudy skies. This was not entirely unexpected, as the weather forecast was very unpromising, but we were hoping there'd be enough gaps between the clouds to see something, even if it was rather limited. But no. And I got word of the cancellation late. I was told that if it was going to be canceled, email would be sent by 14:00, but I wasn't notified until after 15:00, by which time I was at Home Depot buying parts to make the tooling to make the bracket. (This was before the drill press belts broke.) And of course I forgot something else (unrelated) I needed there, so I'll have to make another trip.

@topspin zero from the public vote, sounds about right.
Meanwhile on Twitter, this happened:
The Cheeky Girls were, well, not exactly the most modest of acts. Opik was engaged to one of them, and cheated on a subsequent fiancĂŠe with one of them. Or something.

Status: After I completely missed the northern lights on Friday night, newspapers said there might be more visible last night. So this time I drove out of town around midnight to see. No night pollution, dark and clear sky. Could clearly see the stars, but not even a hint of northern lights. Well, maybe next decade.

The thing that breaks my brain is that when A moves away from B at velocity v, you can also look at if as if it's B that's moving away from A at velocity -v. Or that both are moving at speed |v/2| from each other. Comparing times gets weird.
That's just due to the absence of an absolute reference frame. It's what lies at the heart of Special Relativity, and is in many ways the observation that nowhere is really all that special by comparison with the whole universe. Combining that with a constant speed of light gives you that whole theory.

Second year. SR was first term of first year, along with the logical tools for partial differential equations and other stuff like that. (Second term was more about quantum mechanics.)

I ordered the item I forgot, to pick it up in-store tomorrow. For some reason, the order didn't go to my local Home Depot store (3 miles (4.8 km) away), it went to another Home Depot 11 miles away, and I didn't notice until after I placed the order. I should be able to cancel that order and place another order with the local store, but homedepot.com is refusing to show the order in my history, so I can't cancel it.

Not really. I don't care whether you follow me or not.
I just noticed I had another, similar drive-by back in 2017. Vietnamese name. Joined, followed 2 people, and disappeared, never to be seen again. The other people (all three of them) are at least semi-regular users I recognize.

Status: Since I was fed up with local contractors, I decided to try Renewal by Anderson, at least to replace the window. My question was really easy - do I need wall framing up before you replace the window or can you install the window to accommodate wall framing later.
I hate talking to people, especially salespeople, so I went to their inquiry form first. Filled out my name, phone number, and question. Session timed out! And helpfully wiped out every textbox on the form! Typical modern web framework behavior so I did it again and again the session timed out and wiped the form.
Then I put typed the question into Notepad, loaded the page, and speedran my way through it. And a third time it pulled that timeout stunt.
So I called the number on the page, listened to the options, and pressed 0 to talk to a customer service agent. It played elevator music for about 3 seconds and went silent. The call went on for another two minutes before I decided to hang up. I called back, picked 5 (the next closest option), and got what was apparently a specific person's answering machine. For a company that I presume is national? Left a message but under no illusions it'll result in a callback.

That's surprisingly honest feedback. I have a less than 1:50 success ratio on interviews, maybe even less than 1:100

I could tell you who we used for our window replacement works â a bunch of genuinely competent folks â but that wouldn't help you at all as I'm pretty sure they don't operate near you. I don't even know if they operate UK-wide or are just local to this area.
Finding trusted people to do house works (windows, construction, electricals, plumbing, etc) for you is not easy. Personal recommendations from (presumably satisfied) neighbours is the easiest method...

@dkf Tried relatives, tried friends of relatives, and the neighbors hate me for not mowing my lawn in the rain to suit them. So it's basically Angie's List or DIY at this point. I've got a callback five minutes after I filled out the form on Angie's List so we'll see how that goes.

But that does not help either: "overqualified" is also not acceptable.

if it's right wing conspiracy theorists that use the "wake up sheeple", why is woke word used for left things?
-
@sockpuppet7 Both sides want people to "awaken" and open their eyes to the erosion of personal autonomy, oppression by people in power, and systemic rights violations. They just have different definitions of autonomy, power, rights, and system.

Until one can prove they will not make any given situation worse by just existing, much less touching a single line in the codebase, yes.
90%+ of the industry are CV padding morons that can't even learn from a cluebat. There's only so much of them that can be kept around as bad example, especially in a small business.

Nah, this is not a new phenomenon. You're right, maybe it's going to get much worse still, but they managed to fuck up everything before that.

The pinnacle of competition. In all seriousness, I kind of support the result of the recent NLRB action to ban basically all non-competes. I don't think the methodology was correct and don't really expect it to hold up in court as-is, but that conversation will get off the rails in a hurry

anything in particular? That's quite a list.
When I had a VPN installed on the firestick and connected to it. Everything flagged it. I moved the VPN to the router and everything works. I think the firestick is flagging it somehow. Or I've just had a really good run with ip addresses.
