This is the first year I've found I can't just do my own taxes. Which is galling. I don't want to fucking buy a $40-$50 program to help me through it; I want the fucking process to be simpler.
$40-50 program? Feh. I have a $300-600 CPA do mine.

Just spent 8 hours organizing my tools and cleaning my garage.
I am MAYBE 10% done.

@izzion I wasn't planning on getting another graphics card upgrade, but I got it for free and it would be a shame to have it sitting unused. On the plus side it means I could upgrade to a 1440p screen sometime before I get a completely new computer!
And yeah, it may be a first gen i7, but it's EXTREME! dons 90s clothing The only problem with that is that any computer upgrade now will feel like a downgrade because the current Extreme Edition costs about as much as a slightly overpowered gaming PC on its own and is also completely wrong for my needs, so I wouldn't go for that one.

Yeah, I did that on Friday. On the plus side, got done today with assignment due on the 8th, assignment due on the 9th, assignment due on the 10th... still have an assignment left due on the 12th. Is it any wonder I haven't gotten around to taxes yet? :X

That's how it starts. Before you know it you'll be burying hookers in the back yard.

Because Opera after version 12 switched from Presto to WebKit/Blink, in effect becoming a Chrome reskin?

That sounds like a reason for the opposite.

I used to do that. Took just as long collecting the information to give to the accountant, then I 'd have to schedule an appointment, then I'd have to review his work. Now I just type the information into the tax software myself.

Just wrote a successful proof-of-concept for an attack I hypothesized... which is good given the entire basis of one of my term projects was countering the attack. :P

So I'm going through my tools and organizing them. This process always includes "pick out the broken ones and get them warrantied"
So I found this:
Cool. It's bent. It's an Armstrong, though - nice industrial tool brand.
Pop into their website, yep, lifetime warranty. Just walk into the distributor or give them a call.Check the catalog to check that there's an equivalent... Well, yes, but it looks WAY different. Tool designs don't change THAT much.
So I do some bonus research. This sucker predates WW2.
Ah, well, let's shoot off an email then:
I have a 3/8 drive flex handle/breaker bar which one of the guys here at the shop managed to bend.
I was going to take it to my distributor to be replaced, but I happened to notice it isn't the same as what's available in the catalog today. Upon further investigation, it looks like this model predates World War 2.
Obviously, this is one of those tools that's been passed down through the family for a few generations. Does the lifetime warranty apply to tools purchased during my grandfather's lifetime?
-
@Weng You are not a good American consumer! that pay raise is wasted on a socialist!
-
@Weng If I were them, that e-mail would make my day.
-
@heterodox said in The Official Status Thread:

That's half the point.
The other half the point is to wangle my way into a $40 replacement (though I'd also be thrilled if they hooked me up with the $17 equivalent from one of their lesser brands).Replacement of broken tools is a fact of life for industrial and professional tool brands* - it doesn't cost much and it buys you SHITLOADS of loyalty.
*Point of order: "Industrial" and "Professional" tool brands are not the same thing. Professional tools are marketed directly to people who use tools for a living. Snap-On, Matco, etc. They are hyper-expensive and are purchased primarily through franchised dealerships based out of the back of trucks. These trucks drive around to the locations where their customers can be found working (Garages, etc.) and do the transaction right there on site. They also do financing and warranty right there on the truck.Industrial tools are marketed through industrial supply companies and direct B2B to the companies that employ people who use tools for a living. They are merely expensive. By and large ain't nobody driving them around and visiting you - you visit the distributor. There ain't no financing (unless you have a line of credit with the distributor).
By and large, these are the same fucking tools that come out of the same fucking factories with different logos stamped on them. There are occasional differences in hand tools - the professional ones will usually be a teeny bit more ergonomic, that sort of thing.
A lot of weird specialist tools are only actually made globally by 2 or 3 companies. I know of a few things where you can pay $9.99 to Harbor Freight, $25.00 to Craftsman, $100 to an Industrial tool brand or $400 to a Professional tool brand and get the exact same thing with a different name silkscreened on the handle.
