Whatever, putting to sleep and waking up again let me unlock (though all the things on the left were still there).

Well they're all merged now and not allowed to have separate names (a solution that may have caused more problems than it solved TBH)...

That does sound like Windows 10.

Are you accessing it by dns name? Some filters are stupid like that if you use the direct IP instead of by name.

A month ago I posted about a "today only" offer of 1TB of cloud storage for $5.95 a year (which by the way is still active, except it now costs $6.95 for some reason), and people said it sounded too cheap to be good.
Well, I just discovered there's a company that seems to be giving 1TB of space for FREE, forever:
How's that for too cheap? Sadly it seems to be invite-only for now. And the page is only in Dutch.

@anonymous234 said in The Official Status Thread:

I really think it would be more effective to have two free 1.000 GB accounts than one € 10,- per-month account...

@Tsaukpaetra dunno about notifications, but I'm sure it doesn't bump. As soon as I delete the post the thread goes back down the list.

@fbmac Dude the this was a joke by someone else on this forum saying I was trying to promote my own posts. It might be on another thread don't worry about it.
Why I would do that is beyond me.

STATUS
Boss is again squeezing me about the license situation with our project (because he's being squeezed from above).
What does it mean to use OSS software? Can we patent our xxx widget? Can we patent anything? Is our code our own IP!? Can somebody sue us for-
I. DON'T. KNOW.
UGH!
Here's a hint: If you can't afford a lawyer to look into the legal stuff, you probably don't need to worry about the legal stuff. If someone were to sue you, you'd be dead from the fees alone, regardless of merit.
Either way,
STOP BOTHERING ME WITH THIS CRAP
EITHER HIRE A LAWYER OR SHUT UP!
-
@cartman82 Fucking ex-Microsoft people. They run a tiny startup, and they are acting like they still run an enterprise department. New businessy people keep showing up, they have like 20 managers, chairmen, customer reps and all other useless fluff, and still only 2 coders and 2 actual content producers.
STOP WORRYING ABOUT LEGAL CRAP AND CORPORATE ETIQUETTE AND A 17 LAYER USER ROLE SYSTEM
STOP TRYING TO BE EVERYTHING TO EVERYONE
FOCUS
YOU ARE A STARTUP NOW. ACT LIKE IT
-
@cartman82 I hate this shit. At uni we had a primer for copyright law and that is about it.

Do you even know what the licenses are on all the pieces of software (libraries, etc.) that you're using are? That's the kind of question that you can answer easily; it doesn't need legal advice. Given that list, does it include anything licensed with the GPL (any version) or the AGPL? If not (and LGPL doesn't count as a problem) you're probably good to go. OTOH, if you're using stuff that is GPL or AGPL licensed, you need to either stop doing that or think about making your code also be under the GPL or AGPL; those two are the “infectious” licenses (most other OSS licenses aren't a problem in practice).
Also, licensed commercial software needs to be checked, but that could be any old thing. Start by doing a plain reading yourself, see if it is obvious that what you're doing is within the intended permitted things or intended banned things. If neither, a talk with a lawyer is definitely required.
Determining what can be patented is something else entirely. Talk to a specialist lawyer if you're going that route.

Yeah, I know about these 2, but was anyone actually sued over that?
My understanding is, Stallman uses that just as a sword of Damocles to force lawsuit-wary corporations to open source their shit. But he's too chicken-shit to actually pull the trigger, as it's not at all clear those licences will hold up in court.
IMO unless you become very VERY big, you don't really need to worry about GPL.

IMO unless you become very VERY big, you don't really need to worry about GPL.Which brings me to another interesting dilemma.
Should I pass this up the chain or not?
If I do, the stupid execs will have a shit show and order everything to stop, until we purge all traces of GPL from code.
However, our tech stack is heavily based on npm, both frontend and backend. Once the full dependency tree is unrolled, it has THOUSANDS of modules. How the fuck am I going to get rid of GPL crap multiple layers deep? It'll take so much time away from actually important stuff...
... or I can just stay quiet and let my boss tell CEO there's nothing to worry about so we can all just move along towards our almost inevitable bankruptcy, and this whole thing will be like it never happened...
Hmmm...

But not all modules in the npm library are based on MIT. And there are thousands of them...

So your way of dealing with potential legal trouble is to just hope no one catches you in the act?

Looking forward to "testing @cartman82's mettle".The trick is to run if only a little bit faster than the mess you leave behind, and never look back.
So your way of dealing with potential legal trouble is to just hope no one catches you in the act?
BTW, I have a feeling that's how most legal trouble is avoided in RL.
