Or, I bet they have a sequence of numeric digits that you could use to exchange voice communications with them, through a device often referred to as a "phone"...
Phones aren't webscale. Get webscale.

Uh, you know emails aren't generally encrypted, right?

-
@Magus the state of being excited?
-
@anotherusername I honestly thought he meant something like "old and decrepit". then I read the excited line and thought all were excited. Then I realised that Americans have some weird second meaning of the word "state" and things started to fall into place. Then I went and got a coffee

@Tsaukpaetra I have to ask. Are you using upvotes as a marker to keep track of which posts you've read?
-
@Magus
Just be careful. If your computer parts stay excited for more than 4 hours, you might have to send them back to see the computer doctor.

It's an easy way to get back to where you were when recovering from jellypotato.

Not a bad idea, actually. I think I'll start doing that too, but to be able to distinguish from yours I'll use downvotes instead. Ok?

Status: As we spent all of yesterday in vain to get a real reproduction of a data parsing issue, I spent today generating an artificial input that reproduces the problem. And proceeded to run into a different data parsing issue in a lower layer which I've suspected of being horribly wrong for ages.
Past practice indicates we don't fix bugs that are only indicated by artificial input. But I'm the area lead of this thing now. But we don't have manpower. So we'll see how it works out.

Status: Youtube and Spotify like serving me ads, because at work I have to use IE to view youtube.
Before, it'd always be some horror movie I didn't want to see, but lately 97% of them have been 'Trump eats children'-type stuff or other Clinton ads.
Please, can they go back to advertising dumb movies I don't want to see? Admittedly this may not seem different, but at least those were clever sometimes...

In about a month. Unfortunately, it's likely to get worse, much worse, before it gets better.

Set your encoding to UTF-8 instead of "broken encoding that putty defaults to"

@Tsaukpaetra said in The Official Status Thread:

Agh, stupid putty. You need to mess with its confusing settings and enable some kind of character set somewhere.
Sorry, I forgot the details. It's been months since I dumped putty for good.

Status: Just imported the map of Germany into mapnik, let osm2pgsql unpack it, create indices and whatnot (especially the whatnot, as it turned out).
Updated status: I guess it's x-nay on the whole map of Germany for now. Because I discovered that
a) a first-time render of the maptiles is quite resource-intensive (one tile is okay, but 10+ of them will cause the user to see a whole lot of 404'ed pink tiles) and
b) while a pre-render is possible, the storage requirements increase exponentially with the zoom level. I'd thus need about 0.75 TB for the whole pre-rendered map.Considering that this is primarily intended as a proof of concept (and not a lot of money behind it), I think I'll tell my brother that we'll roll out one of the smaller states of Germany first.
-
@Rhywden Hamburg? (Bremen being two separate parts seems likely to complicate things)
-
As said before we have a really smart lady that has loads of domain knowledge (not necessarily techie) saying "they aren't saving these on the SAN because they are running out of disk space".
In Sprint meeting without the lady that has lots of Domain knowledge. I said "She said it was a problem with disk space on the SAN so maybe the easiest solution would be to increase the space on the SAN for know until we can get a better more user friendly solution".
BAs continue to talk about the software being the problem even though the software being crap wasn't the problem for once.

Since my brother lives about 150 km south of me, I think we'll go with Lower Saxony, Hamburg and Bremen - including the two city states will avoid two blank spots in the map and it also won't increase the tile counts by that much.

Status: One of my closest online friends died today. He just had major surgery about a month and a half ago, and he just told me this morning that he was finally starting to feel better these past few days, and then apparently a blood clot went to his lung within an hour or two of him saying that. Today was his anniversary. We were planning to go with him and his wife around New Year's to Las Vegas, where they were going to renew their vows. His son's only seven years old. He was such a great guy. He always saw the best in literally everybody, and he was always trying to make everyone happy. He was probably the single most laid-back, forgiving, and friendly person I've ever met. Him and his family didn't deserve this.

Status: Well, I've been trying that damn hotel's online booking and it's well and truly fucked. It's been continually fucked for over 24 hours. It's fucked with multiple browsers in multiple operating systems. It's more fucked than the biggest orgy ever conceived of in the whole debauched history of the Roman Empire.
It's not just not working (at the critical stage of actually getting a reservation), I've just got a totally unstyled page that says “
Access Denied: You don't have permission to access "http://prod-failover.ichotelsgroup.com/7943/error.html" on this server
”. So it's a failure to get the error page on a failover server. That's very well fucked in my book, and having seen the actual error page a few times, I'll just note that it's also unprofessional shit. Get yourself an intern; they'll make something that actually sucks less. On their first working day.IHG? Your attitude to taking bookings sucks rabid raccoon balls, and yet one would have thought that doing this sort of thing is one of the most important parts of your business as it is close to key to getting customers to give you money. But you guys? “Hahaha lol cant be bothered lol” is the impression you are giving. Right. Now.
I'm a little bit annoyed. Can anyone tell?

I've never had that much of a problem with IHG. Then again, I've only ever booked with The Intercontinental itself. Maybe the other hotels have shittier reservation systems. Or they use the same system and they fucked it up since the last time I reserved a room.

The key is to have a spouse or a secretary to make those bookings for you.

You'd probably be better off just calling the hotel directly if you're still having issues.
-
@Fox said in The Official Status Thread:

I have might do that. I loathe using the phone, especially long distance (6 hours difference in timezone isn't trivial) and talking to hotels that way is particularly awful as they tend to do little things like getting my name and CC# wrong. BTDT, and it was awful to turn up at the hotel (in pre-Katrina New Orleans that time) and have to try to prove to them that I really had a reservation. The Bad Old Days really were bad. :(
It's not quite as bad as turning up and finding that yes, they know about your reservation but they've decided to not give you a room anyway. That's happened once, and the way it was sorted out really annoyed me. But that wasn't a computing or other technical fuck up; it was just people being a bunch of utter jerks.
-
@dkf Just send email as I told you. If they don't know the group rate you need, tell them to get their IT staffs looking it up in the database.
Black and white communication minimize possible "getting my name and CC# wrong" part you said.
