That depends where you are. Some parts have decent East-West transport.
Yeah, I'm generalising. Anyhow, this part doesn't.

Provided one of those “East-West” includes London, that's true. But then you're in London…

I've driven that far to go to the beach. And I lived on another beach at the time.

That's literally probably the justification for turning it off. If I was there, I would have told him point blank: turning off the firewall does not make the hard drive perform better under any circumstances.

Status: Successfully trolled some of my pupils by posing the following question in an exam:
A train takes 6 hours and 15 minutes for a distance of 525 km. Calculate the average speed of the train.
Some of them will curse those ancient Babylonians now for causing an hour to have 60 minutes and not 100.
You can probably guess what they did.

Oh, firewall, I was thinking AV. IIRC the Windows one will turn itself off if it sees another one. Running two AV, especially when one of them is Symantec, will slow things down.

I have more trouble with seconds/minute, personally. Minutes per hour I guess I have a better handle on?
anyway. Status: Kicking myself for not writing flush(). I had this exact problem last week!

Divide 5.25e5 by 6.25 for M/h?
@FrostCat said in The Official Status Thread:

Yeah, Endpoint protection is the firewall component in that suite.
@FrostCat said in The Official Status Thread:

Yes, but apparently won't automatically turn itself back on if the replacement turns back off.

Yes.

No, but it will tell you you're going commando, as you see, so you can turn it back on.

nodebb makes me give up from posting most times, so it save me from the work of deleting stuff. ain't it awesome?

Status: reinventing upsert in SSIS I think...

@Rhywden It's a classic question. (The answer is 52½.) Though you could have asked about 6 hours 6 minutes and 549 km, which generates an elegant result despite the slightly confusing starting values. :)

Speakin to my boss is like speaking with a senior with dementia. He has no idea of what's going on, and explaining it to him doesn't make shit for changing that.
He will also mention deliveries and dates I wasn't aware of.
Or I'm the one getting brain damaged, my code from last week seems to point in this direction.

Status: This idiot right here forgot to check in the latest sources for his Unplug Standby applet (which essentially puts the computer to sleep within a user-definable period after power is lost, regardless of apparent user activity unless canceled).
What currently exists in source control? A half-baked idea of the application from 2011, basically just some template code and a DLL import. This is the sole remaining location of source for this app, with exception to an executable in some network share.
So what do I do? Well, the only real thing I can do: Decompile and interpret from that what the app was doing.
Luckily it's only like 500 lines of code, so it shouldn't take too long...

statusbolded text**** for the first time in my professional career, I've encountered "get data from Access" in someone's workflow.
The data comes out of Access and into Dynamics Navision.
NAV is a CRM already.
NAV is meant for medium companies making millions of dollars.
Why is Access there?
=(

Um, so you're hiding the fact that it's disabled by default by making it fiction by enabling it? Am I missing something, or are they trying to solve Schrodinger's App?

No, that one commenter is a loon, apparently. He keeps saying sideloading is off, therefore UWP (the new universal windows platform app style) sucks.
The thing is, apparently with the November update, sideloading is on, but he won't admit it. It's kind of like someone else on this forum who's busy with today's fake tantrum staged solely to distract from the fact that he's a jerk.

Careful, in Windows the firewall is responsible for many things, including font installation.

The outage was due to a tree falling on a wire.
The Dwarf Fortress update includes the ability to cut down trees in adventure mode.
So it's entirely possible that I live inside Dwarf Fortress.

@ben_lubar said in The Official Status Thread:

Well, it IS Turing complete, right?
-
@Onyx Probably. The problem with testing Dwarf Fortress for turing completeness is that it's basically a CPU that can decide not to compute things if it doesn't feel like it.

I wonder if it's possible to define a Turing machine where every instruction is of the form "Flip a coin. If it lands heads, this instruction does nothing. If it flips tails, do X"

I think that's called Xcode.
