STATUS:
Don't you just love it when Stack Overflow poster goes through all the trouble of adding MSDN links to support his claims, but they are all dead a year later?
I'm AMAZED at Microsoft's inability to keep their documentation links alive and searchable.

@RaceProUK said in The Official Status Thread:
Is that your personal machine?
Yep.
@RaceProUK said in The Official Status Thread:
Why does it look like it's on a domain?
'cuz it is.
@RaceProUK said in The Official Status Thread:
And if it is really on a domain, why have you not configured it properly via the domain controller?
The domain controller is supposed to configure all computers to not update. What am I missing?
@Rhywden said in The Official Status Thread:
So, you never want to receive patches and updates?
No, I want to control when and how I get them. Apparently i need to set up a whole subsystem to accomplish this.
@loopback0 said in The Official Status Thread:

Not an available option. I guess this is what I get for using such early software?
So it sounds like the best solution is to install a service on the domain controller, upgrade all my stuff to the latest version (because apparently the first build of Windows 10 LTSB was broken and doesn't obey its' own rules), and switch the Windows Update closer to the "Do everything for me, but once in a while hint the system will be rebooting" setting?
I'll get right on that...

So LTSB works differently, like I suggested

No idea I'm afraid; never used a domain controller myself.
@Tsaukpaetra said in The Official Status Thread:

That sounds like the cause of your issues :)
-
@loopback0 said in The Official Status Thread:

Yeah. It shouldn't ever reboot without explicit authorization (which, according to settings, is "Don't ask me, I'll ask you"). This is the version of Windows meant to run on Mission CRITICAL machines, where things like unexpected reboots shouldn't even be a hypothetical question. Guess I was wrong.
Granted, it's been doing fairly well for a while, but recently I think it's forgotten what it was and what it's meant to be.
To me, Mission Critical means I run my program, and it will require physical malfunction (or program error) to stop it. If the OS can't be trusted to do what it says, why am I running it for my Mission Critical application? Granted, my "Mission Critical" applications are normal consumer programs, but the concept is the same: At no point should the OS prevent, deter, inhibit, or otherwise prevent the correct and functional operation of the applications running on it, EVER. To expect otherwise would be an automatic downgrade in class to "Typical consumer OS".

@RaceProUK said in The Official Status Thread:

Yeah, and I'm going to take an image of this PC and see if things get better with a reinstall on a more recent build (Hint: probably not, because this broken behavior is apparently expected).

As with all things, it can be overdone (once you get into the month, or definitely year range, it's probably best to switch to a normal date format), and Discourse overdid it... But.... it's much easier to read if you're talking about a time range less than that

It hasn't. Which is why it's perfect. It works, and they just left well enough alone.

There's an option somewhere to say "On startup, show...". You can disable showing the "latest news" or "what's new" or whatever else piece of shit they're calling the "let us dump ads onto your workspace" these days.
how the flip am I supposed to respond to something that intentionally displays only when I'm not using my computer?

Yes. Windows 10 installs nagware which nags you to update to Windows 10.
I wouldn't be surprised if it did.
But Windows 7 has a "patch" that installs nag/trick ware to install Windows 10.

You should put a clause in your contracts stating that requests showing a certain amount of incompetence are grounds for immediate termination.

@blakeyrat Show your work.
The movie and book used different squadron names, but they were colors: Red, Blue, Gold, etc. Luke was Red Five (I think in the novelization he was Blue Two.) You are thinking of Empire Strikes Back.
And the Rogue Squadron of the books was the same Rogue Squadron.

:D So long as you follow it with Space instead of Enter, you should be fine. I think it's because the custom replacements don't take precedence in the emoji picker for some reason.
