What I was mostly objecting to was how dismissive you were to an actual problem with actual software.
It's self-evident that if the product was perfect, he would have found the value he was looking for. He didn't, so it isn't, so it's a flaw, so fix it. Or at least commiserate and figure out what can be done to alleviate it (documentation, etc.)

I'm not convinced it's an actual problem. Does your direct deposit statement show the net deposit in the deductions section?
Or at least commiserate and figure out what can be done to alleviate it (documentation, etc.)
Funny, I thought this was a safe space to complain about users. Why are you triggering me?
I already said I can put it in there if he really wants it. So far, one of my coworkers has already replied to him and said we don't normally show that, and he hasn't responded, and I've already said that if he makes an issue of it I'll put it in--it'll be pretty simple to do, but I'm very busy with regulatory compliance bullshit that affects every customer, and adding something stupid like this takes up valuable time I could be doing things that are, yes, more important than this, not that I would ever hint to the customer I felt that way.
Also, he's seen this form dozens of times in the last 6 months and has never said a word about it before today.
-
I'm not convinced it's an actual problem.
Then why were you contacted about it?
Funny, I thought this was a safe space to complain about users.
I also like complaining about shitty developers, and one thing a lot of shitty developers do is dismiss their users.
-
I'm not convinced it's an actual problem.
Every user complaint means the thing is broken and needs to be changed. Always. Now make everything Comic Sans, the font is too sad.
-
Then why were you contacted about it?
Because people complain about stuff all the time.
one thing a lot of shitty developers do is dismiss their users.
Some of us awesome developers dismiss trivial and/or stupid complaints from users, too, but I guess someone who's too cool to read the articles here wouldn't understand that.
Being dismissive to unaffiliated third parties doesn't mean I won't address the complaint, but far be it from you to give anyone the benefit of the doubt.
-
Yup.
-
Now make everything Comic Sans, the font is too sad.
It's horrible, isn't it? I have no control over it, though.

FieldReference is a string
I mean, that's completely valid and all, but...
I was really intrigued by the HoloLens, until it was revealed it only has a 25° field-of-view.
I just want the platform to succeed, since the future devices that use it are bound to be amazing.

Status: Corporate mandates I need to re-register on their "emergency notifications" website (for raisins), but I guess they disabled-but-not-removed all the existing accounts, so now I need a new username.
What do you think about this one? (It's one character less than the maximum)
-
I mean, that's completely valid and all, but..
But it seems to show a complete misunderstanding of string.format(). Written by a pretty senior dev who's generally pretty good
-
so now I need a new username.
Email conversation:
Error creating account: Username already exists.
Also, apparently I cannot recover my existing account. Is there any particular reason why you’re holding my existing account hostage? If not, please delete the old one so I can register correctly.
@ServiceContinuity said:
Tsaukpaetra, Tsaukpaetra, Tsaukpaetra. Your’re starting from scratch. No hostages. So, re-register again – but this time use a NEW Username and Password – one not used previously. And you should be fine.
Oh. Okay. I was just wondering how I was “starting from scratch” if I was not allowed to use a previous username.
It sounds counter-intuitive, but I was able to get through it!Fun fact: I personally know ServiceContinuity. Didn't expect them to be the one responding.
-
Your’re starting from scratch.
use a NEW Username
nope. Still doesn't compute...
-

Agreed. But I have better things to do at work than argue with headquarters...

What's the point of knowing them if they won't fix the username issue?

What's the point of knowing them if they won't fix the username issue?
I didn't say knowing them provided any benefits (shut up, Engine). This is probably not on them, it's the provider we're using.
Actually, that just caused me to shudder a bit, since they have multiple clients on this system. Does this make it necessary to have unique usernames across the whole system? If so.... collisions!
-

No - but I suggested it should.
Does this make it necessary to have unique usernames across the whole system?
How is this different to most other multi-tenanted systems?
-
How is this different to most other multi-tenanted systems?
I don't know. I would have assumed that the account named "admin" for client A would necessarily be different to the account named "admin" for client B, and never the two shall meet, but from your words it sounds like this is not so...
-
If both client A and B have separate accounts called "admin" then it's presumably not system-wide but client-wide.
-

That's what I'm saying! With this system, there can't be two "admin" accounts, regardless of client, so therefore systemwide.
Since systemwide, then potential for collision attack (for whatever information can be gleaned from that).
It sounded (to me) that when you said:
Tsaukpaetra:
Does this make it necessary to have unique usernames across the whole system? How is this different to most other multi-tenanted systems?
That you indicated most multi-tenant systems are system-wide oriented, which didn't make sense to me.Put it this way:
If I have an Active Directory domain MyDomain1 and MyDomain2, should I not expect that admin@MyDomain1 be a different account to admin@MyDomain2, despite being hosted in the same forest?
-

Some of them are the equivalent of having all accounts in MyDomain.
Salesforce is the most extreme example I can think of. 150,000 or something customers split across different data centres all over the world. Usernames are unique across the entire platform.
If I have an username on an instance in the London data centre, you cannot also have the same username on an instance based in America.

Status: holy shit, tarn's been reading recipe books, which means we probably won't be restricted to salads made of minced flour anymore.

Yeah, he's basically doing a concat and then a more expensive concat. lol.

I mean, seriously, what is their intended target audience? Children are right out, obviously, and I'm not sure that this makes sense as a comedy.
Also, the scene towards the end in the flour with the can trying to stuff its noodles back in - that allusion will most likely earn it the German equivalent of an "R".

will be the first American R-rated computer animated movie.[5]

OMG his segments on FIFA and Sepp Blatter are amazing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qr6ar3xJL_Q
Also check out the follow-up after he resigns, and Oliver does all the free product placement he promised: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Csi_BEgL_U
And in the interests of Nationalist Trolling, let me just say once more than it was the US of A that cleaned up the dirty soccer business, even though nobody in this country gives a flying fuck about soccer. That's just how awesome we are.

No, now they'll be made of minced flour, minced lettuce, minced lettuce, minced lettuce, and finely minced lettuce.
-
Five ingredients? What is this madness?

Well, there's lettuce egg sausage and lettuce, that's not got much lettuce in it.
-
Fun fact: in the Masterwork mod, you can make sausage out of vermin and meat. Which is apparently an inorganic material called "BACTERIA"? What the fuck is this shit

So I phoned the labour authority and the guy on the phone says that they should pay me.
However, they may pick a fight on me if I insist that they pay me.
They may sue me for the claimed financial damage from that claimed man month loss, just to bother/threaten me with a court case. The guy on the phone said that it would be difficult for them to prove that I caused such financial damage and he thinks they probably know it and they probably just said it because they were... upset.
So it sounds like that's illegal but they can still pick a fight just to threaten me.
But I don't think they will bother that much. After all, it's only half my paycheck(I only started working on that project from March),
and it's not that big.
-
Good on you.

On principle, I think you should pursue it. No one should ever be stiffed on wages. You spent the time, they should pay you for it. If you were to pursue it, would they have to cover your legal costs?
-
We were sub-contracted by their company?
Oh god, in theory, they could sub contract a freelancer agency, the agency takes a chunk out of whatever they give them, pays some very unfortunate programmers who will work even worse conditions and shorter deadlines.
Makes me shudder just to imagine it.
@Polygeekery
I phoned Company D(the actual former employer) and they said they will pay me when/if their upper contractor pays them.
Due to the vagueness of the language, I can't tell if that's an if or when.
But overall, the prospect doesn't seem too bad.
I think I will get paid.
-
I think I will get paid.
Make sure that you do. You should be paid for your time.
Unfortunately, I don't know if the laws in your country will support that. There are principles, and then there is just blindly pursuing something that you will never be paid for.

Brazillian ex-president just gained a ministery, less than a week after a prison order was emitted againt him, so he can't be judged by a normal court.
RIO DE JANEIRO — After the police raided his home and prosecutors sought his arrest, the former president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, seemed destined to become the biggest figure caught in the widening corruption investigation upending Latin America’s largest country.
But as it turns out, he may have an unusual escape route. Instead of facing jail, he is becoming a cabinet minister: President Dilma Rousseff, his protégée and successor, announced Wednesday that she was making him chief of staff.
The move grants Mr. da Silva, the founder and face of the governing Workers’ Party, broad legal protections, but it quickly intensified the political upheaval rattling the nation.

Status: I guess the Linux way to get shit done is to chain together a bunch of CLI programs that only do one thing. Fine.
But why are so many of these CLI programs single-threaded!? Jesus. My computer has like 57 different cores, and these CLi programs are using precisely one of them.
-
I hope you're not expecting sympathy from me, you piece of shit. I'm glad you live in a hell-hole.
-
But why are so many of these CLI programs single-threaded!?
What CLI program are you using that should be multi-threaded but isn't? git is multithreaded. Do you want cat to be multithreaded? Or ls? Why don't you explain what you mean instead of making me use my telepathic guess shoulder lizard aliens?

This is pngcrush. I'm feeding it about 1400 PNG images at once, and it's using maybe 6% of my CPU and something like 4% of my SSD transfer capacity.
-
Okay, I've done some searching, and it looks like there are precisely 0 popular PNG compression tools that have been updated in the last year or so. That sucks.
