Gods damn it Ben I was drunk enough to actually click that link (on mobile none the less). Put up warnings for those of us too inebriated to tell we shouldn't click it.

I wonder if it's more that XOR is difficult to create or that AND and NOT are easier to fit into the XOR pattern
Those are the two I'd say are most likely contributing factors.@Tsaukpaetra said:
and having fewer logic types allows better compression of the template that builds them?
But that could also potentially be part of it, too.

Those are the two I'd say are most likely contributing factors.
When I did some ASIC design the base building blocks (HDL synthesis) were NAND gates as it's possible to build every other type of logic function with just NAND (or NOR).
In Silicon an AND gate is always a NAND followed by an NAND inverter, something about the NAND structure being easier to fabricate. If it is something purely mechanical like that (like @Tsaukpaetra said) is that because biological systems tend to always take the approach with the lowest 'cost'?

Status: more debugging fun!
So you have a data-bound table with filters for each column. Two of those columns are effectively identical date/time columns - same filtering settings, same format strings, just bound to different properties. But one of the column shows a datepicker by the filter, and the other just has an exclamation mark with
title="Invalid date format"
. Filtering on both columns works if you enter the date manually, both columns show the data, but the datepicker UI control doesn't show on one of them. Why?
Because one of the column is bound to a property directly on the column, and other binds to a property of an object inside the object by passing
"SubObject.Property"
as the property name - which thanks to NHibernate magic works everywhere in the application exactly as if you bound directly to the data, but somewhere along the way that dot makes the control freak out. And why "invalid date format"? Because the former dev apparently hasn't found any other error, so he just set it as a default message.
TorturingTesting a new design in our big environmental chamber. Just stuck my head through the access port to see what breathing -50°C (-58°F) air is like...painful is the answer. The product isn't liking it much eitherEdit: I have killed a piece of test equipment in there with it, success! Our product is still working although the LCD got very sluggish and then failed completely at about -30°C.

Status: I just realized that every single time I've done any programming involving numeric ranges (like working with input from touch screen or outputting graphics) I've ended up having to reimplement the same function:
#in pseudocode, aka Python def transform_range(value, old_min, old_max, new_min, new_max): if old_min == old_max: raise Exception("range is zero") old_range = (old_max - old_min) new_range = (new_max - new_min) new_value = (((value - old_min) * new_range) / old_range) + new_min return new_value }
(notice that max does not have to be greater than min, you can adjust from the range [0, 1] to [1, 0]. Maybe left and right would be better names)
Sure, when you have some experience, this is obvious. But as a noob, having this function built into the language just like min() and max() are could have saved me a few headaches.
Seriously, if I had the time, I'd be submitting requests to have it added to standard libraries right now.

Status: If you have successfully assembled a basic pH-Meter and now want to see whether it behaves as it should, you really should check your calculations twice.
Because titrating a 1 M HCl solution with a 0.1 M NaOH solution (instead of 1 M) will take just a tiny bit of time. And if the pH4 buffer you used to calibrate the meter also needs 1 M NaOH then anything you would have measured would have been wrong anyway.
On the other hand: The voltage values I get are remarkably stable - it's only the initial stabilization in the pH 7 solution which takes a long time.

Trying to decide between sick or working from home. Either way I could work on the project, but if I do sick I wouldn't be expected to answer IMs between 10 AM and 4 PM and could attempt a nap.

Never did understand why that didn't work....

I can't go to sleep, that's exactly the problem.
I can only go to bed.
I'm going to do the WTF route, and if I need to collapse into a nap, just send an email to my boss explaining what's going on. He's the type who doesn't really care when or where you work as long as shit gets done.
Then while I'm working I can also wash my sheets because who knows, maybe that'll work, I'm out of other ideas.

Invariably you have already been to the doctor and me saying this is just causing you to hate me for saying it.
You should call in sick, since you are sick i.e. you body is not functioning properly.

Status: You're all jealous of my free web browser and you know it!
...and also I can't beat Bass's Omega form in battle network 3. Instead of using normal attacks and occasionally using his crazy ones that regenerate his life aura (Which, I might add, has nothing to do with what either of those words mean in the rest of gaming!), he just only uses those special ones. So I have to be dealing relatively large amounts of damage to him every 3 seconds or so, or I become unable to deal any.
The pain!

I sometimes round-robin through diphenhydramine (lol Firefox dictionary tried to correct that to methamphetamine...) and melatonin. Back in the day I'd use a triple-shot of vodka from time-to-time as well. Problem is I build up a tolerance to any drug so quickly they only work for a couple days at most.
I know what causes my insomnia though, and correcting that just isn't an option at this stage of life. I grew up on a farm where our nearest neighbor was a mile away, and was always outside. Now I live in a 600 square foot apartment, in a city, and work in an office. I never see the outdoors, especially in winter. At least in the summer I can go dirt biking and hiking and stuff, I sleep pretty well after some quality outdoors time.

You play SMITE, so I'll explain it in a way you can understand.
Here's the map:
The blue team starts in the upper left in a tavern.
The red team starts in the lower right on a dock.Immediately outside of the spawn point are two doors. You can activate them with supply. One door makes archers and the other door makes door breakers. Players start with 1 supply and can carry up to 2. Supply can be obtained in the middle or by killing an enemy player that has supply. Players inside the enemy base drop 2 supply on death no matter how many supply they are carrying.
In the lower left is the blue lord, Jasska the Bold.
In the upper right is the red lord, Dalvis the Dreaded. The objective is simply to kill the enemy team's lord. To do so, you need to destroy the outer and inner gates. Players cannot damage gates and archers deal very little damage to gates, but a cluster of door breakers can take a door from full health down to nothing in seconds.
At 3 minutes into the match and every 3 minutes thereafter, mist essence spawns on the side of one or both of the lanes. The first spawn is on the side where the team that has fewer points is attacking, the second is the other side, and the rest spawn on both sides. Any player can summon a mist champion by channeling the mist essence for 10 seconds. Channeling is canceled if the player moves or takes damage.
Everyone starts with one mist champion unlocked: a guy with a shield.
Players can unlock more mist champions by playing lots of matches. The released ones so far are:- a guy with a cannon
- a woman that can turn herself and allies invisible
- a guy that likes apples

if I do sick I wouldn't be expected to answer IMs between 10 AM and 4 PM and could attempt a nap.
If you work from home and manage a nap, you can at least claim you couldn't answer IMs because you were eating lunch, possibly out.
Well, you'd have 60-90 minutes or so where you could reasonably claim that.

Lunestra[1]? Warm milk? Lunestra in warm milk?
[1] I use that specific word as a stand-in for the general class of "sleep aids", including things like Ambien, illegal drugs, and possibly homeopathic remedies.

homeopathic remedies.
If he isn't taking any drugs, then he's taking extremely homeopathic doses of the drugs and thus should be able to sleep!
