The Official Status Thread

I do it almost every day to connect my work laptop to the netzzz while on the bus. Someone here (RacePro?) actually tipped me off that the latest Windows Phone update allowed it over Bluetooth instead of using the battery-sucking wifi chip.
You should be able to--I can with my Android phone, but my wife's using the tablet at the moment.
-
I assume Android 4 is better than 2. We'll see.
Android FOUR?
Android's on version SIX now.
WTF manufacturers? Nobody's selling devices with Windows Phone 8 (without .1) or iOS 7 anymore.
The Android ecosystem is just beyond fucked up.

Install OwnCloud and host your music, but you need data plan :--D

Okay, since the Likes thread is out, I need someone to like this post for research purposes, stat. There's a potential Discobug in here and I'm not letting it go away.

Night and day compared to Windows Phone, which has fewer apps but they all work in a way Android never did.
Cloud-First
-
Install OwnCloud and host your music, but you need data plan :--D
Cloud-- third party owned massively decentralized server farm with redundancy and is connection agnostic.
Own-- first party owned centralized server on a single box.
Fuck marketing.

There's some potential... give me one more please?

Apparently not--turn off wifi, pair to phone with tethering enabled, open up Chrome, "You are not connected to the internet."
-
Yessss.

Android FOUR?
Android's on version SIX now.
Come on--how many phones other than Nexus ones are on 6 yet?
A lot of lower-end devices are still on the last Kit-Kat, and I think most newish ones are still on 5.
Oh, and for @blakeyrat, apparently the current FireOS is a customized Android 5.1.
-
Nice baiting.

GIVE ME AOSP OR GIVE ME DEATH!
(reasonable specs and an unlocked bootloader so i can at least install cyanogen mod would be an acceptable alternative as well, just don't fuck with my baseband in such a way that only your shitty android overlay can talk to it)

Wait till you see Android 6!

GIVE ME AOSP OR GIVE ME DEATH!
Try running Android 5 on a Galaxy Note II. Can't be done if you want Google services.
If it's a choice between AOSP and no 3rd-party apps, I'll stick with a customized version of Samsung's rom.

FTFY

Meh. The Note series are very nice phones. And I got it in 2013, so you're a little late with your advice.
-
FTFY
I plan on never purchasing another device with a locked bootloader. So much drama...
-
If I buy an Amazon tablet can I use Google Play apps?
No. Not easily. Play Services needs more work than just installing the app itself. You can use the $150 Amazon credit on a non-amazon crappy tablet though (I'd personally recommend the Nexus 7 2013).
Is that like Android 5
Yeah, Amazon's stuff is totally different, I don't have any idea how the versions correlate. Basically, Amazon forked Android, did unspeakable things to it, and turned it into a conduit to make them more money. So pretty much never assume apps that work on Android work on Amazon's crappy fork...
EDIT: According to Frostcat it's actually possible now. Maybe my information's out of date... Last time I tried a Kindle tablet though, it wasn't easy...

When I did it, I had to download an application on my computer, plug in the tablet, and basically let the application use ADB to sideload some apps. Takes a couple minutes. You are, of course, placing a certain amount of trust in some random person on the interweb.
-
Oh, right, OK yeah that's what I had to do too.
Well, for the like 5 minutes I left stock on there. Then I rooted, installed TWRP, and put on Cyanogen
-

I'm not going to mess with my wife's machine more than the minimum.
-
Yeah, that's probably a good idea....
-
Did you replace git-push.exe with something that does nothing? That doesn't sound like anything I've ever seen git do.
Git fans, perhaps via sorcery, never seem to experience these things that I see multiple times a month. From my experience, Rhywden's story is pretty typical.
-
Oh, it apparently has to do with pushing over HTTP and the server being configured to not accept files over a certain size. I never use HTTP, so that'd probably be why I've never encountered it.
By the way, that was literally the first result on Google for
git push no output
.

Ok, well Amazon's shipping something called FireOS 5, which I'm just going to assume is the same thing as Android 5.
WTF manufacturers? Nobody's selling devices with Windows Phone 8 (without .1) or iOS 7 anymore.
Yeah, and even in that good ecosystem it still takes WAY too fucking long between Microsoft creating the update and AT&T actually pushing it out via their network. (And seriously, what's the delay? There's only ONE Windows Phone maker worth worrying about. What the fuck does AT&T think will go wrong if they don't test on their own?)
The Android ecosystem is just beyond fucked up.
I'm noticing that. It was fucked up in 2.2 also, but for different reasons. (Like how even if you had external storage, you couldn't actually put apps on it, you were limited to the tiny built-in memory. I hit up against that one a lot.)
-
So you can inject a script into your own Likes Received stream?
-
Pfft. Each to their own. I prefer my Galaxy S5 to my Nexus 5.

Yeah, which... is still a whole major version behind.
Wikipedia does say it's Android 5.0 though.

If you'd read to the bottom of the thread before replying you'd see that it is.

I shaved balls, that's good enough.

Status: Want to watch the handball final again. And again. And again. Also still wondering why this sport is not popular on the other side if the pond.

Yeah, like it's very popular around here. Hell, I didn't even know the Spanish team was on the finals of the thing.

Hell, I didn't even know the Spanish team was on the finals of the thing.
That's a bit sad, especially since Spain is a great team. But on the plus side, it prevented you from watching a Spanish disaster yesterday. Before the game, I could've sworn the Spanish team was better, but Germany dominated them the whole time. It almost felt like that soccer semi-final against Brazil (7-1) two years ago.
I like handball a lot more than soccer, since it's more fast-paced and therefore less boring to watch, and I'd say it's the second most popular sport in Europe after soccer (not in every single country, but on average). In the US, OTOH, most people don't even know it exists.

More than basketball or tennis? I really doubt your statement and this guys are here to prove it:
1- Football
2- Basketball
3- Tennis
4- Cricket
...
25- HandballEven MotoGP or F1 are more popular than handball.
-
More than basketball or tennis?
In Scandinavian countries and Germany: Definitely yes. By far.

Did you notice the word "global"? Of course it's pretty low in the global list, since noone outside Europe plays it.

Which shows a more believable list (#12 instead of #25). I still wonder where they get their numbers from.
