Boss: Cartman, client wants us to make something like Facebook, only for companies. Can you give me an estimate?
Me: .... (are you fucking kidding me?)
Boss: So a company can create an account and search for other companies, and then they can go into chat and make deals.
Me: .... Why wouldn't they just use the yellow pages and contact the other company directly?
Boss: Ummm...
Me: Never mind. 3-6 months, a team of 3-5 people, for a minimal viable product.
Boss: Thanks!

I'm pretty sure everyone knows I wear the same clothes. I'm not some [insert politically correct euphemism] that only wears clothes once and then never again?
Next thing I'm going to learn is that the people here only wash once a week.
-
wash once a week.
Well, yeah. I have enough clothes to survive that long! Geesh!
If you're washing your clothes every day.... um, let's not go down that road, k?

That sounds like a job for "Upwork"
3-6 months, a team of 3-5 people, for a minimal viable product.
Seems appropriate... but now you're fucked for giving that/any estimate.
And this sounds like, I don't know... fucking ALIBABA!!!

(supposedly) Apple's iOS 9.2.1 update broke something in the mobile app we wrote
Status: Nope. This issue sits solely on user error. On, apparently, both the end user and also on the support person at the client that attempted to reproduce the issue.
I was going to write more, but I'm thinking it's something I should dump in the Lounge, so I don't have to anonymize nearly so much, and so I don't dump a long post in the Status thread.

The moment he told me we would outsource this app as opposed to making it ourselves (not included in the OP for brevity) is the moment I decided to give the estimate.
:-)

Status:
After configuring the network yesterday, I managed to break every form of remote access I could try.
VPN: Broken, misconfigured.
RD Gateway: Broken, server forgot its certificate.
SSH: Broken, server hung at POST
TeamViewer: Broken due to RD (I can connect, but get a black screen due to RD or fast user switching)
Other SSH: Doesn't work because it's a Git-ssh server.Almost all of those problems are easily fixable. If I could get access to something

Statii:
MMO: Got two of my friends to 50, approximately one and a half quest chains behind my Karok (61). I made my Fiona on this server use swords, and it is glorious! Shield Enhancement makes my counters stun most bosses every time. I've fought the red dragon several times, and everything is awesome. Really looking forward to having them reach the cyclops, Thor, and the golems.
RL: My friend who wanted to write a story started trying to use the editor I made for making choose your own adventure apps on Win10 seriously, and him doing so found a bunch of bugs (which I fixed) and some things I need to do with it. Quite fun, actually working on something with a 'client'.
-
Update: I can remotely reboot via TeamViewer, so hopefully that will kill the RD session and get me access.
Hopefully.
-
-
Well, it's shut down.
Now to hope it boots successfully (no reason it shouldn't, but you never know...)
-
no reason it shouldn't
Yeah, never assume things shouldn't do something...
I get burned so much after this thought has passed through my mind and executed an action. "Oh, rebooting the main router shouldn't be a problem, just wait a few minutes and it will be right as rain!" (four hours later) "Well, it's a good thing nobody was at home to yell about the internet being down, since I couldn't take off of work to go and fix it..."
-
Well, I mean, if it doesn't come back up, I'm no worse off than I was (I still won't have remote access, but that's what I was trying to fix to begin with)
I'm beginning to suspect it won't come back up though. I have no idea why, but it's been rebooting for a good 15 or so minutes with no response.

You're stuck in the Windows Update hole for a while. ;P
-
I hope that's it

More likely than not it's the BIOS going "Hey, it's January 25th! Press F1 to continue!"
-
If it's a physical machine: some idiot left a floppy, usb or cd in it and the boot priority is not set to HD first.

Err, that may actually be the problem. I don't think I left a CD in the drive... but...

been there done that, didn't get the t-shirt.

?
-
Something like that ... although I never found out what was exactly on the cd.
-
Oh, was it one of the "There's no operating system on this device, but screw it, I'm not gonna try the next device on the list" things?
-
I have no idea. I eventually got hold of the company actually maintaining those servers. They did send out someone and he phoned me back to tell me the server was booting ... by the time he got hold of me it was already fully up and running.

Time to order a snow blower from Amazon same day delivery.

I don't think residential snow blowers are rated for 3 miles of highway.

A snow blower full of pointed at the ground. Genius!

Well, you get a badge for it (Tumbleweed I think?) so there's always gamification to help you feel... better?

That would be awesome if true. 3 views in 6 minutes. No votes, answers or comments.

Yeah, I got one of those for the question I asked about a year ago.
EDIT: Oh. No, I didn't somehow. But the question's a little over a year old with about 50 views total and a single upvote.

Awe damn, just like Discourse, I can't use the badges page to figure out which question got me the badge.
It's almost like they were created by the same people...

Status: Shenanigans. This is the dude that was originally assigned to create my site in Test:
Note that the site (will) lives on a Windows 2008 server under IIS.Now, it's assigned to :
Who is on-call for the next three days, and won't work on the ticket unless it's re-created as critical or an approved project.
Edit: Also, why do the UNIX agents get video capabilities on Lync?!

Edit: Also, why do the UNIX agents get video capabilities on Lync?!
They both have the video button?
-
They both have the video button?
Ah, but the video button doesn't work on the second. It's there for show. Clicking it does nothing.
-
Edit: Also, why do the UNIX agents get video capabilities on Lync?!
Why wouldn't they?
-
Ah right. Handy.
-
Why wouldn't they?
Because our company isn't progressive enough to actually use the voice/video chat features of Lync?
I can only assume that they were able to bypass Group Policy and the device auditing system to install their webcam on their workstation, since we here can't even plug in a USB headset.
-
Because our company isn't progressive enough to actually use the voice/video chat features of Lync?
And that's the software's fault?
Look, we're not telepathic, if you're going to ask "WTH GUYZZZ" about Lync, we need to know why you consider that unusual or strange.
-
we need to know why you consider that unusual or strange.
Fair enough. I comprehend that the inference that it was strange for a certain group of people to get something where nobody else did was a little too obscure.
Edit: And it was more along the lines of "Why video?" than "Why guys"

STATUS:
Got home from school, started debugging network problems.
It's worse than I thought.
Server A was stuck on the after-POST screen with a black blinking cursor. I dicked around in BIOS config and I think I fixed it, it boots now.
Server B, the VPN/RD Gateway server, is borked unexplainably. I get this
when trying to connect. Which... is amazingly unhelpful. At least I've got 2 of the 3 online. SSH server was, in fact, waiting for me to press F1 and acknowledge the lack of keyboard
EDIT: Oh, looks like this is related...
Remote Desktop Connection Broker Client failed to redirect the user LOCAL\Steven. Error: NULL
Error: NULL. Fantastic

If you get a local console, check to see if the firewall is detecting you're in the domain. Mine went bonkers and set itself to Public for no apparent reason, which (since RDP isn't allowed on public networks per GP) prevented a lot of stuff from making itself be available...
-
Status: Earlier today, I entered the wrong TLD for npmjs.com. I was greeted by about twelve redirects followed by a text to speech voice telling me that what I did was very bad and that I should call the number on my screen for help. Also a 1000000-line alert() in a while(true).
-
Well I actually fixed it, I think. Looks like RD Broker Service decided it didn't want to work any more and shut off. Turned it back on via server manager and all was good.
Now to fix the VPN config.
Lesson learned: Never unjoin a server from a domain unless you don't care about it any more
