A motor oil bottle in a pile of plastics could potentially contaminate a whole batch of otherwise-recyclable materials and cause the whole lot to be sent to the landfill.
TIL, I always just threw them in the recycling container.
Recycling is nearly useless. You have the problem of contamination (you simply don't know what the plastic was exposed to), you don't have pure plastic (it's usually coloured, there's the additives, ...) and sometimes it's hard to distinguish between types of plastic (though IR spectroscopy will help there).
Recycled plastic is usually found in low-quality flower pots and buckets.

Maybe blakey can use one of those for a water bottle.

One does wonder: How dire is his financial situation that he feels the need to reuse a motor oil bottle to store drinking water?

That was my first thought also. My wife uses the CamelBak Eddy water bottles. $11 on Amazon and you can just run it through the dishwasher once.
I had the greatest idea! I should empty out one of those plastic bottles of motor oil, run it through the dishwasher like a hundred times, then use it as a water bottle.
-
I don't doubt that, but I also don't think the plastic of the oil can can magically retain all those harmful chemicals after multiple washings and leech them out days or weeks later. That sounds like crazysauce.
Maybe you could sell the water to Flint.

Covered in the Bad Ideas thread after some dumb fucker decided to move the same conversation into two different threads.
-
Hell yeah, Flint's cool as shit.
Fuck Discourse up the ass. Ruining my joke.

Instead of bringing my work to a halt, how about Git just clean up a couple files each time it runs?
SmartGit at least says 'hey your repo needs to be cleaned up'. Never seen SourceTree offer. And command line? HA!

Yeah but I also have a sister-in-law who constantly lectures me on all the thousands of things that cause mega-cancer, and yet I do not have mega-cancer yet, so I'm pretty dubious about claims like yours.
I've also heard bleach isn't very tasty and can potentially kill you.

Oh I know who did it. Just thinking of passive aggressive way to get my point across.
Reject the code review for superfluous changes?

By cleaning up, I mean I deleted 99% of them without reading them...

Chili and a peanut butter sandwich for lunch.
I first parsed that as a chili / peanut butter sandwich. **shudder**

Oh. You didn't just remove the Inbox label from them?
No, I don't use the OSX mail app. ;)

That might not be too bad, if you made it as an open-face sandwich.

Status: Just learned that next week I'll give 4 hours of lessons, total.
Because I'll have the unadulterated joy of unboxing all my physics equipment for which I have given several lesson-free days.
I'll probably need those because not only do I have to put everything in a rational order (I cannot simply use the old layout because that was not optimal and the layout of my repository has changed anyway), I also need to test everything if it's still working so I can do an insurance claim in case the moving company broke anything.
And in the unlikely case I run out of work I'll have to help my colleague who'll face an equally large task with the chemistry collection.
-
Have fun, and I guess we'll see you in a week?
-
Well, I also learned that my colleague gave away our gas flasks for oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen so there's less of a chance I'll blow myself away in the future.
No more easy access to large amounts of oxyhydrogen gas for me!
But we still have fuming nitric and concentrated sulfuric acid, so there's still the nitro-compounds to keep things lively!

:-) I meant see you on the forums. Not as a piece of debris re-entering earth orbit along with what's left of the quadrantids.

Spoilsport.

Is there a way to send a PM without going to your profile (and thus 502 Ok-ing the entire forum)?
-
If the PM-ee is someone who has recently posted in a thread, you can bring up their user card and hit the "Message" button on that.
Warning: may not be safe for all user cards cough@aliceifcough
-
Honestly with how long it takes to open my profile it might be quicker to just randomly surf threads until I see their name.
Thanks.
-
but it has to come through the company's WSUS server.
Yeah, we don't have one. I had to wait for weeks until IT finally got me an appropriate key. Didn't think about downgrade, should have done that... (and, yeah, I should never have put Enterprise on here. Pro would have been fine.)
-
Your colleague is an idiot, sorta. Valid solution, but wrong reason.
Also, yes, default collation for MySQL is a _ci collation, meaning case insensitive.
-
The point of that badge is to not earn it. So...

You can also and then select the "Message @username" option.

Both my manager and I (accidentally) submitted two (nearly) identical tickets to get me access to a certain system. Let's see how this pans out....
They reject yours in 5 minutes then approve his 2 hours later?
-
On second thought, the left coast has much stricter environmental regulations. It may be a lot more expensive to recycle oil there. But they should still take it.
Where I live (bay area), I can just set it out on the curb on recycling day and they pick it up.
edit: missed that it was clean oil.
-
Staus: #SnotoriousBIG started here a little more than an hour ago.
-
so I don't know how to get rid of the oil
You take it to any place that does oil changes. They are allowed to charge you--I don't know if they will or not.
If they're unused, just put 'em up on Craigslist or your local Freecycle--you'll probably have a response in minutes.
-
Are you people fucking stupid? Place an ad that says, "free motor oil! ... but I need the bottle back."
-
They usually pump it out of huge drums, they don't buy it a quart at a time.
Any place that does sells oil has to take used oil. You'd be giving it away, of course, or even paying slightly for the privilege, but at least it'd be gone.
If it's new, then like I said in my last post, put it up in Craigslist or something.
-
Status: Sick of talking about motor oil with stupid people.
Also, the porters of Marathon 1 to the "Aleph One" engine and Windows turned the original MIDI tracks into .ogg files, because Windows' sound cards don't play the MIDI "correctly". ("Correctly" being defined as: the way QuickTime 2.0 would have back in 1996.)
So anyway I couldn't find my carefully-ripped Marathon soundtrack MP3s I made ages ago, but now you can just download the Aleph One copy of it and get the soundtrack in .ogg form, so yay. Probably more accurate to the original than mine was anyway.

I'd say he deserves it especially since his pencil is African-American.

No, but if you want the bottle back, you are stupid and/or about to become very very sick.
-
stupid people.
Fuck you, Samir, it serves you right for posting so much that it took me this long to get to your replies. I'm not going to read the entire thread before replying any more than you do.

Marathon's soundtrack, for a violent FPS game, is some of the most soothing and relaxing work-music I know of:

Which I can't upload to Amazon Music because it inexplicably only supports mp3 format? WTF Amazon.

Being a software developer, I spent about 3 times longer looking for a quality program to do bulk .ogg -> .mp3 conversions than it took to just rubber-band all the files open in SoundForge and hit Control-F2 (Save As), Enter, Control-F4 (Close) 16 times.
