Last CD easily available,
May I introduce you to PXE booting? ;)
If your box supports PXE, surely it supports
A) Boot from USB
B) Boot from floppy and netinstall
C) Boot from DVD
EDIT: @sloosecannon, why on earth did you think PXE booting was your best bet as opposed to any of the above or literally buying some CDs??!
-
Yeah, that may be the thing to do. How hard is that to configure on a home network though?
About 90 trillion times harder than just booting off a USB device, of which you probably have 57 sitting around.
-

Not on this computer. My boot choices are CD-ROM, floppy, or PXE
-
Then fix your busted-ass computer.
EDIT: wait, what happens if you have a USB-connected CD-ROM drive? Does the universe implode?
-
It's an older computer. I can't "fix" it, because the BIOS doesn't support any other boot methods.
Yes, I could get a new computer, but why would I do that?

now, where did i put my cluebat brand crowbar?

Then it's going to cost you more in power consumption than it's worth.

Then it's going to cost you more in power consumption than it's worth.
Power, for this situation, is virtually free. Computers are not.
-
It used to be there!
Presumably fell victim to Jeff's war on software providing information.
-
EDIT: @sloosecannon, why on earth did you think PXE booting was your best bet as opposed to any of the above or literally buying some CDs??!
It's much easier IMO.
Also - boot from floppy?! What fucking decade is this?!
-
Netinstall from floppy is quite handy, especially when all you have are floppies.
-
I still want you to try a USB-connected CD drive. How is it possible to boot from CD (on a computer with USB; I assume it's not that old) without also booting from USB? It's a conundrum!
Anyway, it'd probably still be quicker to grab a screwdriver, pop open the case, move the HD to a computer that doesn't suck, shove your boot files on the HD, then move the HD back to the crappy shit computer than it is to set up PXE boot.
-
I don't have access to a single computer with a floppy drive. Not at home, not at work. It's
20152016.
-
USB-connected CD drive
Looks like a USB flash drive. Therefore, it won't boot. Computer doesn't support boot from USB at all.

I'd do that, but it's SCSI and I don't have any ability to do that either.
Plus I've been meaning to set up a PXE server anyways. Figured it's a good reason to get off my butt and do it.
-
I use a computer with a floppy drive that's faster than your computer(s).
-
Netinstall from floppy
TBH, I'd do that but I literally have no floppy
drivesdisks.Nor do I have a way to write the netinstall to them....
-

I doubt it, but I'm also not going to get into some stupid ComputerPeen game so whatever.
-
Computer doesn't support boot from USB at all.
But it does support boot from CD, and a USB-connected CD-ROM reads a CD. Thus the conundrum. How is it possible!? Universe implosion!

Jesus, what the fuck.

Oh, you're a masochist? You could have just mentioned that at the start. No wonder.
-
It's an old-ish HP Workstation with dual-socket Xeons. For whatever reason, they came with floppy drives for quite some time.
-
Dell PowerEdge 1750. It's a little old.

No, I just actually enjoy technology and working with this stuff, and spend time at home learning it. Like you apparently don't. I believe the technical term for that is "hobbyist"

"I was going to sleep." "Well you can't. This is part of being a programmer".
Let me just say that line WOULD get me to walk from WtfCorp. No hesitation. No delay. No doubt.

I think we have one of those at work sitting on top of a cupboard gathering dust.
-
Probably.
I picked it up at a local salvage store for $35.

No, I just actually enjoy technology and working with this stuff, and spend time at home learning it.
Nobody enjoys setting up a PXE server.

Fscking hell, WHY?!?!

Although I don't want to know what sort of Hell is unleashed with Discourse "custom virtual DOM code to bypass Ember".
It's a Javascript parser written in Ember. All actual JS on done through that rather than actual Ember scripting[1].
[1] shut up, you're detracting from the joke by pointing out I have no idea what I just said.
-
I wouldn't put it past them to actually do that

Yeah. That.

I've seen older computers like that. While a USB-connected CD-ROM reads a CD, the BIOS considers it a USB device, not a CD, and simply won't give you an option to boot from it. I actually had one in like 2007, so there's some timepodding going on.
-
-
It's either this or video games, and this is more productive
Ah, this must be some strange new form of the word "productive" I'm not familiar with.

Quite.

Hey, there is learning taking place. That's productive. At least more productive than zoning out on a game...
Ok, nobody without brain damage enjoys it.

given that curse, I'm rather glad it wasn't.
this is vendor code and i never worked for the vendor.

Wait wait wait, is that x86 without 64-bit extensions?
You're even crazier.

I would say that "collateral" is probably the most correct when looking for a word that says:
Never heard that in common usage... I have heard "security" (short for "security deposit") quite often.
