STATUS: All the liberals on twitter are frotthing at the mouth about something gun related in rural USA. Yet, there's nothing on the front page of my local papers about it, so it must be completely unimportant and/or overblown.
I think I'll just wait for the predictable WTDWTF flame war to get the details.
-
Probably the open carry thing in Texas.
-
Obama's considering using executive action to force through some gun reform I don't know the details of.
Also crazed gun-wielding "free man on the land" idiots have taken over some national park building in Oregon. Not related, AFAIK.

crazed gun-wielding "free man on the land" idiots
Oh! I hadn't realised that was their political position. Means they're not just idiots, but massive idiots with only a very tangential connection to reality.
But not an IT-related WTF.
-
They're defending a guy who:
- Refused to pay grazing fees for grazing a herd on public land
- Then engaged in poaching on that same public land
- Then set a fire that burned like hundreds of acres to cover-up evidence of the poaching
Because, you know, free man on the land.
Apparently, none of those three things is worthy of a prison term. According to these morons. (You could argue about the first two, but setting a fire kind of crosses the line.)

That's the one that got everyone upset, I think.
-
Yes, and they probably also think that they don't owe taxes because they don't want to pay taxes. Or at least that was what one of these types basically argued when he came up before my father (who was a magistrate at the time). Unsurprisingly, this argument was only notable for being unusually crazy and distinctly ineffective at keeping the individual out of prison…
-
Yes, and they probably also think that they don't owe taxes because they don't want to pay taxes.
Ah, the good old Wesley Snipes gambit.
I wonder how many high profile people they need to lock up before these hard liners get the message.
-
Apparently, none of those three things is worthy of a prison term.
According to the news story I read, the two people involved in the arson served terms of 3 months and 1 year, respectively, for the crime. After the term was served and both men were out of jail, a federal judge determined it wasn't long enough and ordered them to report back to jail until a 5 year term was served.
So, not exactly angels on the government's side of the issue either...
-
... that happened to like a thousands prisoners in Washington State due to some faulty software (we discussed here a few weeks ago). I didn't see any insane militias here.
Yes, it sucks. It doesn't "grab a bunch of guns and occupy government property" suck.
-
Ok, so I was mistaken in the original sentences... it was 3 years (for the father) and 11 months (for the son).
https://reason.com/blog/2016/01/03/armed-protesters-occupy-remote-federal-o
And this isn't "oh we over-credited you for good behavior time, you still have sentence left to serve". This is "so, we went into this whole plea deal thing, and the judge chose to sentence you lower than the minimums because those sentences shocked his conscience, so the Justice Department appealed your sentence even though the terms of your plea deal prohibit you from appealing the sentence, good luck."
I can see why they feel wronged, given that the government never proved anything against them other than the arson charges (that they agreed to plead guilty to), and then the government took a second nip at the well when the judge they had came back with a sentence the government didn't agree with.
-
It doesn't "grab a bunch of guns and occupy government property" suck.
I dunno. We're talking about what is effectively deep-rural Oregon here…

Why would people run unofficial servers when they could just use the official ones?
While there are other reasons, like "I didn't like the latest patch" it probably boils down to "I don't want to pay" for most. I don't know, I don't play unofficial servers.
-
Probably the open carry thing in Texas.
No. Two guys got sentenced to jail for setting fires on federal land, in rural wherever, to protect their land. They spent a couple years in jail after cutting a deal with the government not to appeal their sentences. After they were released the prosecutors went back and said "hey, judge, you didn't give them the mandatory minimum sentence[1]! We think they should go back to jail for the rest of the minimum term." While the two farmers are expected to turn themselves in, some guy siezed an empty or abandoned building on Federal land, probably just to get their name in the news.
[1] The judge thought the minimum was overkill. I believe he used the term "shocked my conscience".

crazed gun-wielding "free man on the land" idiots
That's not really an accurate statement of their position. The guy's family's been grazing on Federal land and paying rent for like 50 years, and the Feds declined last year to renew his lease, and he refused to move his herd. The newspapers report it as "he won't pay the money he owed" but my understanding is that isn't true, but that the government won't take his money. I don't think he's related to the actual legal issue I outlined in my last post, but he appears to have done this for some kind of publicity, maybe to get another 15 minutes of fame?
-
Oh! I hadn't realised that was their political position.
It's not. @Blakeyrat can't be bothered to accurately or honestly summarize the positions of people he doesn't agree with.
-
You could argue about the first two, but setting a fire kind of crosses the line.
The way I heard it reported in a couple of places is those were management fires, but I didn't care enough to bother looking more.
-
a federal judge determined it wasn't long enough
From what I read, the judge declined to give them a 5-year sentence, and after they were released, the prosecutor insisted they be re-jailed.
Why not do that while they're still in jail? Seems like an asshole thing to let someone out and then say "oh, wait". They had at least a year, obviously, while the one guy was in jail. Why did they wait?
-
From what I understand, the people who are actually involved in the case have released a statement that they'll report to prison on Monday, no problem. The people grabbing the land are mostly looking for an excuse, as they seem to be an extreme anti-government anti-environmentalist group. Their leader, Bundy, owes more than a million dollars in grazing fees because he does not recognise the right of the government to own the land his cattle graze on. Their demands include the government ceding the refuge to "local control" and the refuge being shut down forever. Source
A blogger I follow has an interesting take on it: http://www.patheos.com/blogs/lovejoyfeminism/2016/01/my-time-at-an-anti-government-summer-camp.html

Nah, they already got destroyed by the Bengals and the Panthers.

So, anybody have some experience with those guys?
Yes, but none of any use to you:
- My high school maths class tested their prototype ~1997. It was OK for a first effort, I imagine technology has advanced since then.
- My step-dad worked at their factory before it was moved to China. Anecdotal evidence only but the Chinese make it better.

Could be. But what I remember of the previous bout of crazy was that they had a beef about a legitimate WTF, but responded with an escalating WTF.

I don't see how it's possible Lorne didn't know. Maybe he's in a coma? A coma which allows for occasional posting.

So the whole "deleting things right after you post them" is not a behavior relegated only to us?

Or here's a radical theory: I don't obsessively follow the relationship status of every forum member? And it's not like either of their profiles would give me that information since:
- unlike @accalia and @raceprouk it isn't in their profiles and
- even if it was, checking the profiles would crash Discourse
