But it doesn't matter; nobody's awake then, anyway. They're all still passed out from the night before until noon (at least).

Status: Did some research and apparently Android Firefox's download problem has been a known issue since at least 2021. So much for keeping up with the latest version. I also like how there's no indication that the "external downloader" option requires a separate app. I thought maybe FF could use a system level component instead of a FF dialog. Nope, separate app. Until you have that app, the option doesn't do anything, not even a warning. Brillant.

@PleegWat I tried that first but the version the distro was giving me wasn't new and shiny enough for Stockfish.

I wasn't expecting the SSH connection to suddenly fall out beneath me. I figured I could either resolve all the dependency conflicts manually or roll back.
-
@error I wouldn't expect the SSH connection to fail immediately, but I would expect every non-builtin command which was not statically linked to fail with linking errors. And most people do not have a statically linked version of coreutils installed.
-
@PleegWat I replaced it with a new version. I was hoping it would "just work" (I know, , this is
Dark SoulsLinux) TIL Linux ABIs don't follow semver compatibility rules.
-
@error Most libraries do, some don't. Libc symbols are internally annotated with version numbers for some arcane reason so if the .so does not have the specific version annotation your executable is using then things won't work.

I guess it's good it's not a job-threatening production outage. Nobody cares if some unknown bot on some unknown forum goes down.
Well, maybe one person cares.

I am a mortal organism under a state of normal decay.

That doesn't normally happen until the mortal organism is mort.

Well, it is nominally balanced by rejuvenation which mostly offsets the breakdown, but yes it is much more obvious when deceased.

A couple of years back, my dad decided to rear-end another driver in a relatively rare car I owned, breaking the grille. He parked it so close to the garage I didn't notice it for weeks and he didn't go out of the way to tell me or do anything about it. So I yelled about it and he said he found the part online and then dragged his feet long enough for an eBay auction I was going to bid on to get pulled. Then it turns out that site didn't actually have it. Awesome. Thus began a fruitless search of my own because every single place has tons of grilles for the next year's body style. After months of this bullshit, I gave up.
Then today I decided to look and I found what I guess is like the national junkyard association's Craig's List and fired off a request into the dark. Three people have reached out claiming to have the part. Nobody puts up a price. First guy gives me an e-mail to contact him, so I do, and he says "yes I have the part." Uh, dude, you want to tell me how I can get the part from you? Haven't heard back from other two yet.
Fucking already!

I would have thought that you of all people here would know better. Sure, until that point the decay is mitigated to the point of avoiding a whole-system breakdown, but the partial losses start much earlier.
