but they've hired a load of pure C# developers many of whom hate SQL.
Ugh.
While I freely admit that I don't like SQL either, I sure as hell won't avoid it if it is the right tool. If you're retrieving data from a database, especially when that's not just “fetch all rows in their entirety” or “fetch the row with this ID”, you should be definitely thinking in terms of SQL. (It's less critical for modification; ORMs seem to handle that better.)

It was 5.9℃ when I left home this morning. In June.

This is a shitty game made by the company that effectively runs PC gaming.
HahahahahahhahahaHAHHAHAHA
Wut!
Best Buy is the largest retailer of TVs, therefore they EFFECTIVELY RUN TV!

I've been installing indie games all mornings. My guess is one of them decided it needs arial for its own purposes.
Time to :facepunch: a dev for scribbling on system fonts...
"Void of Darkness" people. An abandoned attempt at creating a top-down space trading sim.
I wonder why they abandoned it....Tar and feather the font-stealers!
Yeah...there is no excuse for scribbling on the system's copy of Arial!Even that game I trolled Blakey with doesn't go stomping around in system folders upon install...
I think I need to start seriously looking for a new job before the rot here starts infecting me
It's worse when your initial import doesn't have FK integrity to begin with...

So apparently Windows 10 is out in two months and they've already started offering the free upgrades to existing users (via this fancy tray icon).Yet:
- Nobody knows (apparently) how the licensing will work. What happens if I need to format and reinstall? Will I be able to move the whole thing to a new system? That's kind of important since I'll want to upgrade my old computer soon.
- When I tried the latest consumer preview a couple weeks ago it was still buggy as hell, so much that it deleted one of my folders for no reason. I hope that's not really the best they had at the time.

Took me a moment to comprehend that this wasn't saying they were offering upgrades via a ninja icon in the tray.
-
The preview has moved a long way recently, and is rather good. As for formatting, I imagine you can do a full reset or whatever like you could in 8, which is essentially a format and reinstall without disks.

Depends on the nature of the failure, but usually yes. (I'd hate the failure to take existing data with it or otherwise cause trouble.)

I'll say it again: Valve can make the best gameplay, but sucks at everything else.
Uh. They haven't released a game with good gameplay since Portal 2 in 2011. So... you're statement is pretty hypothetical at this point.
I'm not a Jobs fan, but his statement "real artists ship" applies to Valve.

I clicked that; it's basically just a "email me when it's actually available" notification.

Some might contend that and say that Dota 2 has good gameplay.
I would contend that and say that they're just rereleasing wc3-era gameplay.

STATUS: Utterly amazed at the fact that our server's HP-UX OS's default encoding is 7-byte ASCII. The current operating system version is from 2007. 2007. Been hunting an apparent bug in my encoding of some text files when I finally traced it back to the charset my terminal was using. What the actual fuck.
I'm fairly sure UTF-8 was standard by then, or at the VERY least, 8-byte ASCII. Someone in this organization has to know how they deal with our own language's characters in this piece of shit OS, so I'm not that worried. Still, the fact that the default user settings fucks our own language up is almost beyond belief to me.
-

... is there such a thing as 8-bit (what I assume you meant to type?) ASCII?
ASCII has always been 7-bits, with the upper 128 varying based on the particulars of the system it's running on. C-64 had a lot of boxes and stuff. DOS had those dumb smileys. Mac Classic actually used them on common international characters.
-
i've said this before:
Charsets are the proof that god exists and hates programmers
-
What's Windows implementation of ASCII then? I'm pretty sure it uses an extended version based on some standard, right?
I'm incredibly far from knowing much of anything about encoding, which is probably the reason something like this surprises me this much.
-
What's Windows implementation of ASCII then? I'm pretty sure it uses an extended version based on some standard, right?
It has the thrilling and exciting name of Windows-1252. If it's a standard, it's only because Windows' popularity made it one.
Apple's was called Mac Roman, because the additional characters were designed for romance languages.
-
-
Guess that makes me dumb, then. The actual WTF is still using non-extended ASCII, I suppose?
I wouldn't have encountered this "bug" were it not for Window's obsession with the carriage return character, so I guess I have to thank them for that, too.
-
Aren't Mac line endings carriage return only? Or did they fix that already?
Or is it one of those urban legends?
-
AFAIK they've been using LF ever since they transitioned to Unix.
-
Guess that makes me dumb, then. The actual WTF is still using non-extended ASCII, I suppose?
Depends on what you're using it for. If you're something like a teletype, trying to go outside ASCII would be a huge WTF.
Aren't Mac line endings carriage return only?
Mac Classic's were. I have no clue what OS X does, although I'm pretty certain it uses only linefeed like Linux since it's so open-source-y.
Ironically, Windows in this case picked both the most annoying and most technically-correct solution by using both characters. If your Windows box send its text file to that hypothetical teletype, it's the only OS that would give you the result you expect.
-

Considering it's from 2007 and I've never ever had to work with a teletype in my entire life, I'd wager there's no need to use ASCII.

I'm thinking more like pre-download.
I'll wait till I hear some signals about how much stuff it breaks. It's only 3GB, should be less than 10 minutes download if their servers are up to snuff and since I'm not planning a day 1 upgrade anyway...

FTFY, but yes Stripping the high bit off of characters has beenRUDE

Yes, UTF-8 was a standard for a while now then, although there is no such thing as "8-bit ASCII", it's either ISO-8859-x, some Windows CP (usually 1232), or MacRoman...Still, the fact that the default user settings fucks our own language up is almost beyond belief to me.
Why are you even using the pile of brain damage called HP-UX to begin with?If your Windows box send its text file to that hypothetical teletype, it's the only OS that would give you the result you expect.
I suspect that *nix boxes talking to honest to goodness TTYs insert the CR somewhere at a lower level...(I'd have to do some research to be sure, though)
