so I assume it was a bot binging.
so it was.... and that is the default binge time....
wonder which bot has binge enabled. the only one of mine that still binges is me to keep me at 100%

!ErrorHasOccured() ??!??! HandleError();Let me guess: `??!` is a trigraph representation of `|`, so that would imply `??!??!` is the `||` operator.

Get an email from one of the people on the call that I was not on mute.
Nice.
In my office building, there's all kinds of people who will carry on phone conversations in the men's room, apparently unperturbed by flushing toilets and other noises.
-
Before seeing the line under "asked by" I assumed it was a trigraph.

Status: my computer's been acting choppy for a while. I just downloaded Passmark and ran the disk benchmarks, and my Samsung 840 SSD that's only about a year or so old--oops, no, it might be as old as August of 2013--got miserable performance scores; worse than my hard drive.
That's pretty disappointing.

@accalia @onyx, can we get some statistics over a longer period of time? It seems as if there is a daily recurring pattern to the cooties...
-
I believe @accalia has all the logs, but I don't have access to the main server. I'm sure she can feed plot.ly with a bigger set though.
-
Oh, also, this was new:
There I was, reading, thread open, loaded all the way to the end. Scrolled up slightly, got dumped onto the 504 page.
Excellent!

absolutely. i can even give you the full sqlite database so you can play with it yourself!
PM me if you want the DB otherwise i should have a weekly graph ready at...... some point.... :-D

I haven't paid too much attention since I don't have an 840, but I keep hearing over at OCN that the 840's have a fatal firmware bug that causes severe slowdowns.
-
There's even a firmware to fix it.
Samsung SSD 840 EVO Performance Restoration Software
Samsung is releasing a new firmware and performance restoration software package for the 840 EVO and 840 EVO mSATA.
The firmware update is recommended to users who may have experienced any drop in read performance of the mentioned drives.
Running the software packages provided will first update the firmware(840 EVO : EXT0CB6Q, 840 EVO mSATA : EXT42B6Q), then scan and calibrate all existing data on the drive.

Shit. Got link? Is there any known fix? Because "severe slowdown" is a perfect description, and it's damaging my calm.

Here's the latest thread on it. Looks like the fix is only for the EVO version and not the plain 840.

I think what I actually have is an EVO but I'll crack the case and double-check.
-
I thought the Samsung SSDs only came in EVO or Pro? Seemed to be the way when I bought my 850 EVOs.
There seems to be another "fix" in the works too.
-
Dunno. The only SSD I have is a Samsung 830, and it's in a laptop I use maybe once or twice a month at most.
Interesting article by the way. This looks like a serious design flaw if the flash cells can discharge that quickly.
-
There's definitely a regular 840 version and AFAIK it doesn't have this issue.
Status: Have fixed a bug. Unsure of the reproduction steps that let us discover the bug. Help.

The box doesn't say EVO, just "Samsung SSD 840 Series".
-
"Also, no fix for the 840 (non EVO) is planned."
Well, fuck. Looks like Samsung's losing my future business (unless @loopback0's anandtech link says otherwise.)
-
Is the 850 affected? I just bought one of those. Damn.
-
Not AFAIK.

-
Seems not to be.
Mother dick, though. .This is my second test; the first one had a minimum read speed of ~50MB/s, and the overall position of the line was much lower.
By contrast my WDC Black 1GB was hovering around 130MB/s, staying very close to that mark.

That does look like one of those affected, judging by the screenshot

Seem to not be at the moment. I hope they stay that way.

IIRC it only says EVO on the back of the drive. I assume you checked there though.

No, because that involved more work. I gotta head back into the office; I'll do it aftwer work.

Status: This external team is actually nice to work with. Wiki with all the details, set us up a demo server, and a ~15 min call to explain all the details. They even sent an example program on how to decrypt their data.
Spent the afternoon walking through it and verifying all the steps work. Major hurdle is going to be finding out how to load the key - I seem to be the only person who thinks the process used to load asymmetric keys into component A will not also work to load symmetric keys into component B. I'm also the only person who dealt with this who knows the code.
It'll probably work - if I duplicate three-quarters of the code.

I used to laugh at the notion that humans can sense slight atmospheric pressure variance well enough to predict weather. It just sounded too implausible.
I also don't mind be proven wrong. It means I learned something and I won't be wrong in the future.
But I really hate that I was proven wrong on this thing. Because it feels like I have a huge spike in my head.
RAIN ALREADY!

I would imagine so, but not to a point where you get a headache because it's going to rain.

Uh, are you sure that the former is the cause of the later?http://www.webmd.com/smoking-cessation/understanding-nicotine-withdrawal-basics Withdrawal from nicotine, an addictive drug found in tobacco, is characterized by symptoms that include **headaches**, anxiety, nausea, and cravings for more tobacco.

Uh, are you sure that the former is the cause of the later?
Oh yes.
- It is getting stormy outside
- Trust me, I know this pain. This is not a regular headache. This is "stop burrowing through my brain!" headache
EDIT: Also, it might seem, from my post upthread, that this is a new revelation to me. It's not. Been happening for years now.

You have to admit, though, that a huge spike in one's head is an effective means of smoking cessation.

This happens at least a couple times each month at my office. No one will ever accept responsibility.

I get migraines triggered by sudden shifts in barometric pressure. It's actually a very common trigger for people who have been diagnosed with chronic migraine. It's common enough that some web sites will use the weather forecast to develop a "headache risk prediction."
