That was just the pre-run simulation. You're now in the checked-staging phase. Then it will go through the streaming-verified-actual-apply phase.

@DogsB Every week or so I get an e-mail from Microsoft about a single-use code I didn't request. In typical needful doer something is being kindly happening fashion, it has zero context to help me figure out who or what is responsible.

Status Was supposed to drive up to Vancouver, WA for my brother's birthday party at noon. But considering
- There's an inch+ of snow and freezing rain on the roads already
- It's only supposed to get worse starting at 10 or so, which is when I'd have to leave
- No one here knows how to drive on snow and ice...including myself (hey, I lived in Florida for a long time. I'm horribly out of practice.)
- The weather service has us under an Ice Storm Warning, and most weather places have recommended rethinking travel plans today
I think I'm not going anywhere. I might have to go to the local store, slowly and carefully. But that's about it.
-
STATUS I think I might be addicted to command stripes. I don't think there is a surface in my mother's house that doesn't have one now.
-
@Benjamin-Hall It also turns out that snow plows are not known, at least in my small town. Maybe the state has some for the highways, but yeah. Not going to go that far to check.
-
@Benjamin-Hall said in The Official Status Thread:

They definitely do, at least in southern Oregon. I've driven behind one coming down Siskiyou Pass (between California and Oregon) on I-5. I don't know about your part of the state.

It's done that the last couple times I updated. And the 2nd time it usually downloads between 1.5 and 2x the original download.

@dcon And then still has to download 5+ GB of simulator runtimes before it can do anything, even after it's downloaded itself.

The program I need it for uses both carplay and watchkit, so we have to, just to build. Even if running it on a physical iPhone without an apple watch.

Status: Trying out a modern mechanical keyboard. (Yes, it's still the clicky kind.) Typing on it has been fine, but it feels weird because it's very flat compared to a Model M.
At least it doesn't glow in the dark.
-
Addendum: it's supposed to hit -15°F tonight. (Currently -8.)
-
@Parody I'm glad I'm not where you are. -6°C is quite cold enough, TYVM, although it will most likely drop a little lower overnight. Forecast says -7, with a very small amount of freezing rain (2–3mm, but that's plenty to make roads treacherous) and enough wind to push the wind chill down to about -15°C.

They all can be turned off. It's just that it takes some amount of reading how to.

Usually you can't see the markings with the LEDs off, though you can at least set them to be steady white (or whatever). I've touch-typed for years, but I still want to be able to see them occasionally or if someone else needs to use the computer.
The markings on a lot of the keyboards I've been looking at are side-by-side in k3W1 fonts, neither of which I prefer. I guess I can't blame the manufacturers for catering to their target audience, but I wish there were more old-and-boring-but-readable ones.
With the decline of brick-and-mortar stores we've lost decent places to try these things out. When I went shopping up in the Cities recently I stopped at MicroCenter hoping to do some testing, but they have so many available that only a few were on display and the nicer keyboards that were out were in clear plastic boxes that let you watch the lights but not touch the keys.

You also can't see them if you've been using your keyboard for so long that the labels have worn off most of the key caps.
-
:smug_model_m_user:: Real keyboards have keycaps whose markings don't wear out, even after 30 years of use.
-
@Zerosquare Too bad they didn't use those key caps for the model 4000 ergo keyboard. Also too bad they don't make it any more.

Something something Model M something something dye-sub keycaps?

Heard from lots of people who love that (style of) keyboard over the years. I've never liked the bent or split keyboard shapes, myself.
They're popular enough that I would have expected today's niche-obsessed fans to have replacement keycaps available. Maybe it's too annoying to do or too niche to fund?

At CES 2024 it's maybe even AI-powered.

I use a corsair K70. While the default lighting is more a feature demo of keyboard backlighting than anything usable, it does turn off with a single button press on the keyboard, and the keycaps are still readable with the backlight disabled.

There are definitely IoT toothbrushes with smartphone apps. These days I really wouldn’t be surprised if someone’s put “AI” in for the hype train to “recommend better cleaning processes from analysing your brushing motion”.

you are doing it wrong.
You should write a document documenting how to write guideline documents. Then a document on reviewing guideline documents. Then a document on approving guideline documents. Then ...

Fucksakes. The parcel made its way from the middle of Ukraine to Gatwick just fine but apparently it can’t make its way the 30 miles from Gatwick to my house correctly.

STATUS I think 2024 has peaked already. The extension lead I bought has three plugs. Two USB-A slots to charge my various nick-nacks and two USB-C slots that can charge two of my laptops at once. And it actually works. 2024 can only go downhill from here.
If it has the power rating to charge all those devices it must be quite a beefy thing

True, they start with green, and then get gray. Not the other way round. In nearly all depictions though, this particular substance is depicted as remaining its original color, perhaps fading to clear.

@izzion I mean, stupid framework decisions can happen in any language. Something called EntityFramework is entering the back of my mind for being a prime example but I may be misremembering.
However, the CADT model is alive and well in all things JS, and combine that with Death by Google and, well, I’m amazed it still exists at all.
