I was going to go to the local park for our city's fireworks show. Driving there was pointless. Cars are parked on the street almost all the way to our house. My ankles hurt too much to walk 15 minutes each way, and the show is only 15 minutes long. (There's a movie in the park afterward that I might or might not have stayed for, but not worth the heat and mosquitos.) No fireworks for me.
My son
iswas up on the roof to see how much he can see through the trees. Line of sight distance is 1.2km/0.74 miles, give or take wherever in the park they're shooting them off from. Not much, apparently.

Status: It must be impossible to explore 100% of the map and do 100% of the research in Age of Empires 2. I did everything on the technology tree except pay for spies and got 98%. Meanwhile I'm pretty sure I uncovered every part of the map hunting down every last part of the first six kingdoms to fall.
Anyway, the final battle was interesting. I had my super nuclear navy that obliterated everything except cavalry and running soldiers. I split the navy in two, then deployed cannon soldiers between them. Mouse went nuts, doing the Nintendo drift, and cannon soldiers were obliterated by the time I regained control. So I tried again, except with triple the soldiers. And they were pretty effective, mowing down every enemy they fired at, until I realized there were way too many cavalry units just out of sight. I tried to retreat back to the transport ships but it was too late.
What finally worked was sending in civilians to build staggered bombard towers advancing up the shore. Navy kept castles from going up, cannoneers kept cavalry at bay long enough for the bombard towers to go up, and the towers halted the cavalry immediately so they could all be shot like the dogs they are. And that's how I celebrated America's birthday, with a video game approximation of its world domination that will never ever end.

Pah. Look, yesterday I was in the forests near Lorch, and I could see a beautiful fire of a grainfield some 10 miles / 15 km away in Perscheid:

@BernieTheBernie I specified the distance to say that they were close enough that he should have been able to see the but for the tree canopy. The trees around here are mostly oaks that branch well below roof height, so looking between the trunks not useful.

@loopback0 I'm mad that Steam isn't doing anything to make games available after they ditch 7 because "hur dur Chrome" next year. Some of the games I have predate 7 itself, like Age of Empires 2. I can go back to my CD copy of that, but this is why I never invested much in Steam. The games work but they decided I can't have access to them anymore. Hopefully there's some sort of crack that bypasses the phoning home.
