@izzion The worst part is that I have real Android devices and only just got an iPhone from work last year that I can't put apps on so sometimes I'm as lost as he is. Especially when it comes to the iPhone. But I can't get that through his skull so he gets upset when I say "I don't know" about what he did or how to fix it.

Biblical floods are approaching on Wednesday...
Hope they got the temperature of +1°C right- a little and that would become a shithole of snow .
(38 l per sqaure meters is about 1.5 inches)

@BernieTheBernie like, mentioned in passing Biblical, i.e. "and they passed through the land of Zed, where there had been a flood, but, behold, that was last year, and lo, the land was not too muddy even"?
And who told you about inches? Aren't those illegal?

Status I'm bad at Mario. I mean the original Super Mario Bros. for NES. Playing it on Switch, I'm really grateful for the rewind mechanism. On the other hand, I'd forgotten how short the levels really are.

Status: my external monitor, which I hadn't touched in months, worked perfectly for about 5 minutes. But I stepped away for a few seconds and when I got back I saw it went completely dark.
I mean completely dark. Not just the backlight. Even the little LED saying it's on doesn't light up anymore. Messing with the power cord and changing to another outlet made no difference.
I blame @Tsaukpaetra.

Probably fixable. Sounds like a fuse, of the unintentional variety.

The 1.5 inches were for rain - or in case of snow, after melting it. So some ~7-15 inches of snow, depending on its consistence.
But true, your place shows a little more than that (fallen in one day, too?)

As an ex-Californian, I am heartily in favor of all possible calamities happening to California. Heavy, wet snow crushing buildings under its weight. (AFAIK, this hasn't happened yet, but one California YouTuber I watch suggested it's a definite possibility when the relatively light, fluffy stuff they have now starts absorbing rain like a sponge.) Floods and mudslides when it melts. Lots of lovely new vegetation growing in the abundant water — which will become highly flammable when it dries out in the summer heat. Throw in some earthquakes for added fun. Maybe we can work a chemical accident or two into the mix. Combo bonus if it all happens in or upstream of Sacramento.
Edit: No ill wishes toward you. Being in a city at low elevation and flat terrain, you're fairly safe from the direct effects of all but the earthquakes and chemical accidents.

This reminds me of how a coworker who's sitting next to me in our open office was constantly complaining that his screen would temporarily go black every time I lock my computer and get up.
I've been doing some Googling and the problem might actually be in my chair, similar to this fella:
https://nitter.net/royvanrijn/status/1214162400666103808
One docking station manufacturer actually warns for it; https://support.displaylink.com/knowledgebase/articles/738618-display-intermittently-blanking-flickering-or-los
Or if you'd like a different example:

Status: I've had the remastered DuckTales game on XBox forever but never played through it. It happened to come up on Steam, thought, for $3 so I rebought it for PC and gave it a whirl.
Fighting Steam to get it to recognize my controller was not fun. At first, it wouldn't recognize it at all. I had to enable some option in Steam's settings to fix that. Then it decided to have the down button stuck. I had to reboot Steam, because "you don't need to reboot after this update" was a lie, to fix that. Finally I got to play the game.
Now, I played the NES version a hundred years ago (along with Rescue Rangers) but I was fairly sure A and B did different things (namely jump and swing cane). Apparently that's not true here. That took some getting used to. I also thought this game was supposed to be more or less a straight remake but as I went on I got the feeling that an awful lot of it was completely different.
Finally, I won, and the epilogue was playing and...it crashed.

@JBert I believe the explanation needs to be spelled out:
When people stand or sit on gas lift chairs, they can generate an EMI spike
And here's a white paper from the link @JBert gave:

Sounds like you might like a significant radiological incident like a big fire at a nuke plant. Those are the absolute devil to clean up, and "causes cancer in California" would gain new meaning.
But you probably don't want an unknown supervolcano going off or a large comet impact. Splash damage too high.

@BernieTheBernie There are varying degrees of stupid question.
Is it likely for a computer with a possibly-wonky PSU to short an external monitor via HDMI?

Medium stupid, for example.
